12 oz. bottle poured into a De Struise chalice. Bottled 4/14/11.
Appearance - Dark brown with some reddish notes. Medium off-white head that settles to some wispy foam nicely. Looks pretty good.
Smell - Honey and malt. Like an unfermented fresh malt syrup aroma. Some phenolic notes. Cloves and light banana.
Taste - Honey is strong. The malt is better incorporated, but it still tastes like a shot of malt syrup has been poured into this after fermentation. Sweet from the honey and malt. Caramel to the extreme. Earthy, though, which balances it nicely. Spicy finish.
Mouthfeel - Sweet and chewy, then immediately dry. The flavors drop off leaving a bitter off flavor that is rather unpleasant. The honey persists, though.
Overall - I don't drink a lot of braggots, but if they all finish like this, then I won't be drinking many more. Tough to review to style when I've only had a couple, but the off flavors in the dry finish aren't fun.

Look: pours ruby brown with a thin white head that quickly dissipates. not quite opaque this beer has around 20% clarity. no lacing was seen.
Smell: mostly vinousy and sweet aromas with dark fruits (figs, raisins being prominent). there's a hint of oxidation from aging but not to any bothersome level.
Taste: Honey, dark fruits, molasses and a good balance between the honey sweetness and assertive bitterness.
Feel: Medium body and oily texture. Pronounced astringency and good (moderate) carbonation. Finish is long, sweet and smooth with some alcohol warming (boozy) appearing at the end.
Overall: since about a year and a half when I last had this vintage, this ale has mellowed and become smoother and easier to drink. that said, it is still potent and complex

Weyerbacher broke this one out at their tasting center in honor of beer week. Very good; dark and rich. The honey taste is subtle.
