I just wish there was an easy way to import from cellarhq.com to this site as it is way better than cellarhq.com but right now I'm too lazy to hand input 300+ beers.. If anyone has a solution plz BM me or post it here.. Btw I have a mac but have access to a PC as well if need be.
Oh, no, I'm not looking for that, I barely keep up with Untappd as it is. Pick some heavy users of the site, like some of the guys posting feedback in here.
Here's what I did to simply this process...
1) On Cellar HQ, view your cellar page
2) Manually select all of the rows that make up your cellar list there by dragging
3) Go to Excel, start a new document, click in the top left most cell, Edit>Paste Special>Values
4) Delete the two rows to the left where "Pencil" and "X" icons used to be
5) Save as a CSV
6) Import into The Beer Cellar using their CSV import functionality
Happy to help in any way I can!
I guess I need to buy excel.. I tried exactly that but when I paste it in macs version of excel it doesn't paste horizontal like cellar hq has it.. It just pastes vertical and NOT horizontal.. So it won't transfer properly.. I will try it at work on my pc next time and see if I can follow ur steps on that and hopefully it works.
Thanks for the feedback! Some responses:
Beer entries can exist at 0/0 in your cellar for a variety of reasons. First, if you're moving from, say, cellar to fridge, and you first reduce Cellar to 0 before incrementing up the Fridge count, you don't want to row to disappear. Second, some users may desire to include 0/0 entries in their cellar and then list them as ISO for trading purposes.
Those are some good ideas regarding Consumed Entries. I'll make a note to add the ability to add tasting notes to consumer entries after they've been made, and to adjust the consumption dates.
As for more cellar locations, I thought about that initially, and something may come in the future, but I won't make any promises there. It's mainly an interface concern--for every column I add, the harder it becomes to keep the display clean and tablet-friendly. (Same goes for any features that affects the interface.) However, I'll continue to think about good ways to accomplish this for the future, it's just not something that will be imminent.
As for BA integration, unfortunately they don't offer anything in the way of an API or account linking, so those features you mentioned really wouldn't be possible. I provide the BA link because it's a great and easy way to quickly get some info about the given beer beyond what's already provided in your cellar, but actually grabbing any info from your account here on BA and listing it on The Beer Cellar would involve scraping and almost certainly violate the TOS of BeerAdvocate.
Thanks again for the feedback!
Worked like a Charm in Excel on a PC.. Still for the life of me can't figure out how to do it in "Numbers" on a Mac but it doesn't really matter as everything is transfered over from Cellarhq to the AWESOME www.beercellar.me
Thanks for the awesome sight. And thanks for the help on transfering
Good deal, for the record, I used Excel for Mac and it worked for me. So, maybe it's just a numbers thing?
Any chance you'd include the ability to "hide" columns/rows on public cellar links?
Possibly. What did you have in mind specifically?
Mainly in cellar/in fridge.
I'll make a note to possibly add some show/hide options to your account settings.
Man, finally went digital (hello 21st century!) with my cellar, and I'm loving the site. Thanks for all the hard work!
Way better than my old pencil and notebook method...
Quick comment regarding the "three character" requirement - I just added the beer Hill Farmstead E. to the database, however because I have 2 vintages of it, I had to add it twice since the name lookup function doesn't recognize beers unless I type in 3 characters. E. only has 2 characters though...
But aside from that minor quibble, love the website!
Thanks for that report! I'll bring that down to 2 characters with the next round of updates.
Ok, so maybe I missed something but I have a few questions on the search fields.
1) If I want to find any people that have 1 particular beer either in their cellar or FT, is there a way to do that?
2) If I want to look at cellars that are close to a particular area, say in Ohio in general, is there a way to do that?
Just imported my spreadsheet, and I just wanted to say that I like the site a lot. Quick, easy and looks really clean.
Looks like a great tool! I just tried a test import and found a number of my sizes were rejected:
341 ml - normal Canadian 12 oz. (ish) bottle size
355 ml - 12 oz.
440 ml - a somewhat common can size
473 ml - common Canadian can size
710 ml - 24 oz.
It would be great if these sizes could be added. Thanks!
Thanks for the feedback! At present, there is no way to search with that kind of granularity. However, improved trade searching and matching is definitely planned, and will likely be a part of the next major feature push.
I'll see about adding these sizes in the next round of updates.
Great work man!! I just signed up! Thanks for putting this together as I have been looking for something to keep track
Any plans for some sort of private activity log? It would be nice to see historical data of when something was added/removed from your cellar. I also noticed that when I sort by Brewery, it's not permanent and defaults back sorting by Beer name after something is edited.
Keep up the good work!
I may add some permanent sorting options to the Account Settings area, but I'm not sure about that yet. As for an activity log, there's the consumption log (assuming you Drink Beer instead of Move Beer), and I'll think about ways to implement further activity tracking. Note, however, that anything on that front that I add in the future will likely only start tracking activity from that point forward, and not cover prior activity.
Thanks for the suggestions
This! By beer name is driving me nuts! By brewery grouping would be key. Also, this would be nice.
Both those features are definitely in the works, tho the beer trade locator won't be in the next push! I've been busy lately with wedding planning (it can be rather all consuming), but I'm hoping to have a small feature push out before the end of the month.
Any recent updates to this project?
I've pushed a number of smaller updates recently, including:
-Import bug fixes, and the ability to Delete All existing beers when importing
-Filtering by Style
-Pagination for Consumed Beers (on desktop and mobile)
-Mobile filtering by In Cellar, In Fridge, etc.
-Ability to set consumption date when drinking beer (on desktop and mobile)
-Mobile tasting note viewing
-Various performance enhancements
And I'm currently in the middle of a slight refactor of the main cellar interface. I'm doing a visual refresh, and I'm moving away from the current modal interface so that everything will be inline and asynchronous--this means no more page refreshes when editing, adding, or deleting a beer, which has the added benefit of not resetting any current sorting options.
Aaaand I have a big list of other features on my to-do list. My spare time to work on things comes in waves, but progress is definitely being made!
This seems like a great tool, with many nice features, but (for me) has one fatal flaw: each entry in the beer list takes up too much space on the page, so you can't see very many on screen at once. Would it be possible to make it more compact? On my monitor the most I can see at a time on The Beer Cellar is 15 entries, whereas on CellarHQ you can view 35 entries at once. (Nitpicking, I know, but it really make a big difference in usability.)
I actually made it a little bigger on purpose, due to the added functionality you have inline (adjusting fridge/cellar counts, checking notes and tasting notes, etc.) relative to CellarHQ. I appreciate the concern, but it's more of a subjective preference, and I don't think I'll be changing that aspect. Vertical space on the web is, after all, free. Apologies if this is a deal breaker for you.
No worries -- you're right, it is a subjective preference, given the trade-offs. Thanks for the response!
i would suggest being able to show your BA screen name so people can look on the cellar lists and then contact you through BA and suggest some possible trades
An internal messaging and trading platform is actually planned, and is likely the next thing up after I finish the refactor that's presently underway.
A tip for anyone transferring from HQ without a copy of excel handy:
Google Spreadsheet doesn't paste the formatting correctly, so here's what I did:
1. Go to your cellar list on HQ and right click -> view source on the page
2. Copy the html table your list resides in (everything from <table id="yourcellar-listing"…> to </table>)
3. Create a document in TextEdit, and go Format->Make Plain Text
4. Paste in your table code.
5. Save as 'cellar.html' and choose [use .html] when promted]
6. Upload the html file to http://tools.daemonservices.com/html_to_csv/ and download the CSV
7. You can then import the csv to Google Spreadsheet and edit the headers, and redownload the CSV
It's a bit of a workaround, but it's free.
There is one major function I've not seen yet in a cellaring site that to me would be awesome. When you enter each beer in, you set a "drink" date (probably by month), and there would be a flag that would show for "on deck" beers once you reach that date. Colour coded probably, green means on deck, red means keep cellaring. An intermediate "orange" setting would be nice to for maybe less than 6 months (could be user set). Then you can sort your list to show what's ready to drink.
I realize this poses a challenge for multiple quantities, there could be multiple "dots" of colour at the far right of each entry corresponding to the # of beers and thus each beer needs to have a drink date entered at time of entry... or one dot that goes green when one of the beers hits 'on deck'.
Am I the odd one out wanting this?
Funny, you're the second person to request this lately From an email response I sent recently:
"Funnily enough, a “drink by” date is actually on my to-do list, as I’ve had similar thoughts—when you get enough bottles, it becomes difficult to keep track of these things. I’ve been using the Notes field to keep track of those dates, but the ability to set a date with a reminder (plus sorting options) would be even better.
Can’t say exactly when this feature will make its debut, but its definitely in the pipeline."
I also think the quantities aspect wouldn't be an issue assuming you input different vintages of the same beer as separate cellar entries.
Also, while I'm here, I put up a new blog post outlining the recent updates (most of which I outlined a few posts ago in this thread): http://www.beercellar.me/blog/happenings
A simple drink-by seems fairly easy. Where things get a little tougher is when you do something like cellartracker does, where you can put in a drinking window for each wine and then it gives you a "Drinkability report" which basically ranks your wine by what you should drink first. This factors in both where you are in the drinking window, as well as how many bottles you had originally and how many you have drank so far. Probably that's overkill for beer, but it might be worth looking at what they have going on over there.
A drinking range also wouldn't be that tough, though I don't think I'll bother with a drinkability report type thing. Thanks for the range suggestion; will make a note of that.
Minor thing, but including a home screen icon file would be good for those of us who've saved the site to our home screen
This is also on my to-do list
anyone have any idea why i can't sign up? I click on the sign up link and all I get is a black/grey screen overlay with nothing? i have tried it multiple times very frustrating
I think we've got Stuckey taken care of. If anyone else runs into any issues, feel free to get in touch.
Has anyone found a Easy Way to print your cellar? When I highlight and click print its "OK" but next to all the Beer names is the loooooooonnngg BA website and other HTML links next to words that kind of make it confusing. I know a lot of plp probably aren't printing there cellar off to a hard copy but If someone has a easy way to do this please lead me in he right direction!. Thanks
P.s. I did export my cellar to a Excel sheet and was able to print it off there and It looks pretty good but I like the setup of the beercellar.me and would like to print it off just like that
Separate names with a comma.
