As you already know, Sun King and Oskar Blues released Chaka last week at CBC, announcing the arrival of the resealable alumi-tek bottles in the craft beer industry. Looks like Sun King plans to use the vessel for its barrel-age and sour ale program (due out this fall). http://draftmag.com/beereditor/get-ready-for-sun-king-sour-ales I think this is crazy cool. Two questions: 1. Thoughts? 2. Since this is kind of a can/bottle hybrid: What other breweries do you know of that can their sour ales?
The bottles/cans are awesome. Never had any Sun King, but I've heard they're expensive (and tasty)...I'd feel a little bizarre buying a $20-$25 sour in an aluminum bottle though
From a marketing perspective, I wouldn't try to make it look so much like a sports drink. That has a couple of negatives associated with it. 1). May be seen by conservatives as marketing to youth, 2). May be seen as too fancy and modern to appeal to more mature beer drinkers. That said, as a delivery device, I can't wait to check it out, because if it doesn't impart a flavor (and it shouldn't) then this is awesome and mega versatile... to say nothing about being more easily shipped in trades.
Per your point No. 1: Hopefully that won't be the case. That type of packaging is already established in the beer industry, just not in the craft beer industry.
I meant mostly as it pertains to the artistic designs. That could be a "Power-Ade" type of drink, looking at it.
I don't really get the point of the resealable tops. The only benefit I can see this really incur is "letting" me jostle my beer around without spilling, so that it's good and flat next time I open it. If this is a supposed matter of convenience, I find it an odd one for a craft brewer to facilitate.
