If beer geeks were paying attention last night while watching True Blood 57 ("Everybody Wants to Rule the World") on HBO they would have seen numerous beer brands featured in the episode. Not unusual as both Merlotte's and Fangtasia frequently show beer during scenes.

In this week's episode we see Bud Light, Budweiser, Corona Light, Dos Equis, Dos Equis Dark, Heineken, Heineken Light, Newcastle Brown, Pacifico, Tecate, Tsingtao, etc. Here are some screen grabs I took:

I expect the typical "Meh." reaction at this point and thoughts about why all of the bar's beer is stored at room temperature, how it's a major fail, why there's so little beer, etc.

However last night's episode got a bit crafty on viewers at around 12 mins and 30 secs into the episode. Featured: Star Island Single from Smuttynose Brewing Co. in Portsmouth, NH. Focus is not on the background, so it's a bit blurry.

Congrats to Smuttynose on the subliminal support from the True Blood crew.

    Cheers!

I saw that and my immediate thought was "wait - I don't think Smutty distributes to Louisiana!" They're usually pretty good about showing Abita tap handles and other things you'd find down there, so there must be a big Smuttynose fan on set...

i don't watch a lot of tv drama.... but aside from the ubiquitous cocktail or clinky glass of scotch you don't see much booze on tv period, much less PRODUCT PLACEMENT booze.

the same people that want to regulate your beer label are the ones that don't want VICE on tv.

at the end of the old law and orders.... jack would always have a drink. funny it is the cops and lawyers that get to drink on tv, the wire, nypd blue....

BEER is the domain of Outfield Fences and digitized Robot Men introducing your NFL highlights. things can be BROUGHT TO YOU by coors, but your favorite character probably just drinks coffee.....

i heard they were talking about selling uniform space in the nfl or nba.... i guess they do it in euro soccer..... but imagine your favorite football team wearing ALLAGASH or STONE patches..... ? the Vice Police would get wind of it eventually....

Haha! Thought the same thing myself. There were several of us that said something on Smutty's FB page too.

It's terrible. One of the worst shows on HBO, and I can't stop watching it. It's not even a guilty pleasure - it's a flat out embarrassment at this point. I'm going to give it this season and then one more to wrap everything up, then I don't think I will be able to take any more.

Seriously though, The tap handles at Merlotte's are usually sprinkled with some local brewers - I've definitely seen Abita make an appearance and I feel like I've seen a sweetwater tap or two... but I could be crazy. Lord knows I can't watch that show sober anymore.

The books although never literary genius used to be easy entertaining reads but even those are awful now too.
