How much are other BA's paying for this beer? I've had this on my list to try and found it at a local bottle shop here in Virginia tonight. Problem is that they want $22 a bomber. Is this normal? If it is, is it worth the price? The last beer I considered at this price was Brooklyn's Black Ops and I turned it down after a friend I trust told me it was solid, but not $25 good at all. He stated other $10-12 bombers were just as good. I don't have a similar point of reference for this beer, so I'm curious what other BA's think. I know it's good, but is it $22-which is twice the price of BCBS-good?

While higher price doesn't mean better taste, I haven't tried Sexual Chocolate myself. I would have paid $22 to try it (I have no idea how this beer normally retails for). Of course, I am only saying this because it's not distributed here.

We both have The Abyss in our profile pics and it is $11-$14 in most areas. I'm just not sure I see a beer being almost twice the price better than The Abyss. I almost bought it just because it just showed up here, so I get your point. $22 is Steep though.

I love Foothills, but don't believe the hype. Not worth $22 per bomber.

i can assure you that it is not twice as good as the abyss. whether or not it's worth $22 though is really up to how much money you have to burn on beer.

$22 seems high. It was $15 at the release event, and I've seen it for I think around $18 in NC. I will say that it's a better $22 beer than Black Ops, if that makes sense.

Also, pretty much this. $22 is still a decent price, and the beer is amazing.

What store in VA did you find it at?

While I've never had the Abyss, it's preeeeeeetty easy to get the message that it's a good beer, and one of the most highly-regarded for its style; if it goes for such a reasonable price, considering the value, then I'm not sure it's the fairest comparison, here. Most of the Abyss' peers probably aren't quite such a ridiculous value. In other words, a 4-pack of Heady Topper is $12, but it's kind of an outlier in terms of value. So, will I buy other DIPAs that cost more per volume? Most definitely.

Do you actually expect another Imperial Stout to be twice as good as the Abyss, or at least proportionally priced, according to relative value? If so, you might be passing on a lot of beers that might otherwise deem "worth it."

18 dollars is the going retail price around NC. 22 sounds like a total ripoff...like you should get a free Hoppyum bomber with that. And yeah I heard it was 15 at the release too. I had SexyChoc on tap at 3 different bars in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. I kind of feel like 7 dollars for a glass is much better than 18 per bomber. Actually I just traded my only bottle for some BA Blackout Stout, which just arrived yesterday! :-D

dont get me wrong, its a good beer. But I also kind of feel like Sexual Chocolate has the name going for it mostly. Maybe this is blasphemy to some people, but I almost prefer Southern Tier Choklat

$15 with a 4 bottle limit @ the brewery release. The bottles that get sold in shops are much higher because an low number of bottles are alloted to bottle shops. Your best bet is to try and find a local watering hole that got a keg to tap as there are some of those out there. Had it on tap at Blue Rock Pizza in High Point a few weeks ago. It's really good IMO, but the BA version is head and shoulders better...

I paid anywhere from 16-19 in various stores around Raleigh. Total Wine was the higher end.

I paid 20 for one. But yes I would get it. Its a great beer and pretty hard for people to get there hands on In my opinion I would pay 22.

Yes, that's steep. But do you know where to get another? If not, is it worth $22 to try out? It's pretty damn good. Personally I wouldn't even pay $18 for it unless it was the BA. Here in Winston-Salem you can get a 10 pour for $5.50. I will stick with that.

I paid $22 at the same store and only regret it a little. Neighbors has it on tap for $5 for a 10oz pour. Well worth it to try the beer.

Bought 4 at Neds in Lynchburg for 22 a piece. Probably gonna be a one time thing for the price. 3 are for friends who can't get it

Hell no it isn't worth the price. It's a solidly average stout. Not special in any way, and a slap in the face at that price. You'll try some at a tasting some day and be like, "holy shit, I can't believe I almost bought that instead of a delicious four pack of ten fidy and a cheeseburger!"

Thanks guys. Went out of town and looks like I made the right decision not picking up. Grabbed a Harywood stout to try while I was in Richmond instead.

Uh.....is it normal to find Foothills stuff in VA, I've never seen any, perhaps just not in the Hampton Roads area?

EDIT: I see seekabrew lists it as [Limited] in VA.

Yeah I would imagine it is not distributed very heavily in VA yet. I live in NC and its hard for me to get bottles of Sexual Chocolate let alone find a bottle in a store.

Had this the other night at a bar for $7 a pint. It is really damn good. Don't know that I would pay that much for a bomber but it is an excellent beer.

After trying this at Foothills a couple weeks ago, I would not pay $22 for a bomber. It's good beer for sure, but I don't think $22 good.

I'd consider paying $22 for the Barrel Aged Sexual Chocolate (which was excellent).

Not sure I'd pay that much for the original.

Got 5 of them at $17 a piece, so about $18ish with tax here in Charlotte

    it's in south/southwest VA up to C'ville.
Richmond gets the "Carolina" brand brews from them and they've been saying we'll get the actual Foothills stuff since their expansion... still havent seen it here.

Yeah man, they love heading up that 29 corridor and hitting Lynchburg and Cville. I have heard the same thing, RVA should get it this summer.

If you're out of the normal distribution area, then $22 would be reasonable. Bottles have sold for much more than that. You used to have to sit outside in the cold all morning to get your allotment.
