So I have recently gotten into porters. Right now my favorites are great lakes edmund fitzgerald, revolutions eugene, and founders porter. I'm interested in trying three floyds alpha klaus; any others anyone would recommend?
Smuttynose Baltic Porter Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter Ballast Point Victory at Sea Les Trois Mousquetaires Grande Cuvee Porter Baltique
I'm not a huge fan of porters but I really enjoyed the Alpha Klaus. I've also heard good things about Cigar City's Jose Marti Porter, I picked up a bottle for my gf but it sounds hoppy enough (65 IBU) that I might drink it myself.
Founders, Edmund Fitz; I am also a big fan of the Sierra Nevada and Bell's. I haven't had the Smuttynose Robust Porter but can attest that the Smuttynose Baltic Porter is spectacular and a good value.
"great lakes edmund fitzgerald, revolutions eugene, and founders porter" - Three of the best in the "Great lakes" region.
Just had my first eddy fitz and bummed i only have one from trade. sooooo good. honestly im gonna second Deschuttes Black Butte Porter that beer is off the charts good my fav porter and ill also second Jose Marti since im a FL native. Even though im being a homer with that Jose Marti is a damn good porter
If you're in the Pittsburgh or Cleveland area, I'd say try to get ahold of Fat Head's Up in Smoke Porter. It's probably my favorite porter that I've had. Also, as you mentioned, Founders Porter is pretty awesome.
My favorites in no particular order are black butte, anchor, taddy porter, fullers London porter, Everett (drinkin my first one now). victory at sea, black butte anniversary,
Oh how coincidental! I just tried Mikkeller's Orange Yuzu Glad I Said Porter last night and it was pretty damn brilliant. Perhaps not the most conventional porter around, but if you like a juicy, zesty citrus punch, do try it. If you don't, try it anyway. If you don't mind bitterness on the verge of becoming astringent, I really enjoy the Rogue Mocha Porter. The first bottle I had didn't work for me, but I bought two and had to have it again. I ended up falling in love with it. One of the best, most balanced ones I've had is the Yo-Ho Tokyo Black. There's a very nice hint of dark fruit in it that took me by surprise initially. Definitely a porter you should try. I must say though, other than the Fuller's porter, I've not heard of the other ones mentioned here. Don't think it's distributed in my country. :'(
Seconding the Gonzo Imperial Porter, if you can find it. I also love any vanilla porter. Breckenridge has a good one and Atwater (a local brewery for me) has a Vanilla Java Porter.
I am not a porter fan, but Victory At Sea by Ballast Point blew me away. I will buy it anytime I see it!!!!
Founders is my go-to porter, and one of my go-to beers in general. However, since no one else has done so I would like to direct you toward Porters from NE Europe, Poland in particular. These are commonly called baltic porters and they generally have higher abv (8-9%), and a richer, more robust flavor than a lot of common American offerings. They are also incredibly affordable as a final bonus.
