how long do they typically last on shelf? I have a case of Mission Hefe, but most are pretty off. I was curious as to a typical shelf life. Help please.

Pretty short shelf life to my taste buds. I'd likely only buy them off the shelf if there were a freshness date.

Not exactly a hefeweiss, but a few months ago a guy gave me a wit from 2011. He's not a beer guy, just had it laying around in his garage. It was amazing, absolutely better than fresh. Bells Winter White.

I bought a few Wheat Love to put away until next year as an experiment. I'd think that weizenbocks would be able to last a few years too.

Hefeweizen is a little light bodied for extended aging. I would go with the 6 month rule as a guideline. Refrigerate if possible to slow down the aging process. Older bottles won't likely be terrible, just not as good as fresh.

I wouldn;t put it down to specifically age, but it's not terrible with a little time on it.
Hefe isn;t a really hop-forward beer that will fade out in a few minutes, but you're right in that over a long time the banana - clove - bubblegum notes can become muted. I've had a few with a year on them and it's just not the same.
I wouldn;t worry about beers being on shelf at stores (at least decent stores, and Trader Joes does a good enough business that your Mission Hefe should be fairly fresh) more so sitting around at home.
