I am brewing a Three Floyds Aombie Dust clone and will be doing a secondary fermentation dry hop. I found 1 oz of whole citra but also have 3 oz of pellet. Which do you think will make for a better clone?

I can't speak to the amount for a clone, but I prefer pellets. I think the quantity should be the same regardless of pellets or whole leaf.

Let's see ...1 oz or 3 in a Zombie Dust clone? (I assume that's what you meant) I'd probably go with 4.

I like Citra, but If it's a 5 gallon batch, 3 oz is too much DH (leaf of pellet). Dry hopping with 3 oz is fine, but add a brighter hops to the mix or you'll end up with a beer that reminds you of canned peaches. Amarillo, if you can obtain it, is an excellant choice.

Amarillo yes but ZD IS Citra...

When I brewed a 100% citra pale ale, I used leaf hops, but you could use either. I used more than 4 oz per 5 gallons though, including the dry hopping, but mine came out even a little hoppier than ZD... If you're set on just using what you have, I would maybe use the 3 oz pellet in the boil and dry hop with the whole leaf... Hope that helps.

I didn't go for the zd clone, however my last apa was magnum bittered with citra for the rest of the additions. I used a 1/2 oz at 10 and 1/2 oz at flameout with a 20 min stand. I used 1 oz of citra in the dryhop addition. It did well in competition, however both judges found the hop overwhelming, one judge deemed it "astringent" while the other called it pungent and "catty". I would toss in an oz of pellets into the fermenter and save the rest for another brew.

Can you post your recipe? I am from the Pacific Northwest so I have never tried it and wouldn't mind brewing this up.

Incredible beer. I used the Wyeast 1968 London ESB with a 1L starter and it has torn into this beer like crazy. The smell is incredible and I can't wait to taste it. I'm going to do 2 Oz Dry pellet for 10 days and bottle and drink asap.

That's a lot of citra :grinning:

I bet it's fantastic. Although the "cat pee" crowd will probably chime in with some feline musings. I've never detected cat pee so maybe I'm immune.

I'm the same way, some people love the cat pee, but I prefer beer.

And the more Citra the merrier. I found a ton at my LHBS and bought as much or that and amarillo as I could afford.

I just had a microbrewed DIPA (10% ABV) that is traditionally brewed with a giga-ton of 100% Citra (the beer list doesn't exactly how much, but it's 100% Citra). Today's brew was advertised as the 'same recipe', but using Simcoe instead of Citra. This was a 15 bbl batch, 100% Simcoe. Dry hopped with 28 lbs. 50 lbs total (and you wonder why Simcoe is hard to find!). Surprisingly, I didn't get any cat pee in either one (I expected it in the Simcoe version). The brewer wasn't there, so I couldn't ask him how he uses it. I'll try to pin him down one of these days.

That is an obscene amount per bbl, but I bet it was tasty. Please let us know if you find out how he used it.

I'll do that. FYI, he's also got an all-Simcoe 7% India Brown Ale on right now in which he used 3 lbs per bbl. That was a killer! (I suspect he recently found himself drowning in Simcoe)

Well, if it's 15 bbl, and it's 31 gallons in a barrel, then it's 465 gallons total, with 28 lbs, which is 448 ounces. Thats just shy of 1 ounce of dry hop, per gallon. .96 ounce per gal.

So on a small homebrew scale of 5 gallons, it's equal to 4.8 or round it up to 5 ounces to dry hop. Not too unheard of.

This was at Haymarket Brewery at Randolph and Halstead in Chicago's West Loop. It's a handy lunch spot.

I would agree with you but, in my experience, pro setups seem to get much better extraction of flavor and aroma than a typical homebrewer. Just sayin'

Well if you scale it down it doesn't seem like much. But from what I've read most microbreweries ipa's use from .5-2 pounds per BBL since they get a bit more efficiency from their hops than we do. I'm sure some use more though.

Nice. So they did Mathias with Simcoe instead?
