couple quick questions ... 1- when was this bottled and first sold? 2- what was the general price then? 3- do you think its going downhill at this point? 4- would you pay $75 now for this? thanks.
1: November of 2010 2. $45 3. Never had it "fresh" but still love it 4. Yes. Recently offered $120 worth of beer in trade for 1.
I'll add that I had it a few months ago and it was the best stout I've ever tasted. If I saw it on sale for $75 now, I'd buy 3. Or maybe 6. Really, what good is money when you could have beer instead?
1. Answered above 2. Answered above 3. Never had it "fresh" either, but it's damn good as of last August when I had it last. 4. No
2nd that. Do you remember when we went into BevMo and cases of 09 BCBS were stacked in the aisles for $11.99? Damn...
$75? No way I'd never do it. Not worth it at all. As a matter of fact give me the sellers info so I can contact them to give them a piece of my mind.
My wife isn't happy with you people who say KH and Rare are going downhill. I move mine to the fridge =)
I've never had it but I'd pay $75 in a heartbeat. Only problem is I haven't seen it for sale any less than $200. And there's no way I'm paying that for 1 bottle of beer.
I have drank the '09 Bomber side by side with Rare 3 times now and not one person out of the roughly dozen different people to try them side by side preferred the '09. The only other BA I am aware of that I have drank them with was mattafett and I know he has said the same thing several times. I should just keep my mouth shut as I am always on the lookout for more Rare, but I honestly cant believe people would say they would rather have the '09 if they tasted them side by side.
Guy offered me a bottle of Cherry Rye the other day for $130...told him I how I felt about him raping the craft beer movement
No, not blindly. Maybe it's the fancy box that makes it taste better to me. I don't know. Once was a complete variant and bomber vertical/horizontal. Once was just the two bottles. Once was KH, Rare, and the '09 Bomber. I do agree that the KH seems to be falling off slightly and I have consumed A LOT of KH. It's still one of my favorite beers. Rare on the other hand is so good every time I have it I can't state for sure whether it is falling off or not. ... and I would buy as much as I possibly could get at $75 FWIW.
1- Fall 2010 2- $45-$60 3- IMO, Absolutely not. 4- Yes I'm saving my last bottle for my next hole-in-one.
What he said^^ We opened a couple '09-'12 BCBS's, and we all thought '10 was the weakest of the bunch, '11 being the best, then opened a Rare. No contest, Rare could be picked out blindly by smell alone, a special beer for sure, mostly due to the time in the barrel, not the type of barrel, IMO of course.
you wont know till you try it, you need to see if you can taste the rare. If you can it was worth it, if you cant then either your palate is broken or you got taken for 75 bucks.
Good. I would do the same and Cherry Rye is my favorite beer (to date, even littlle better than coffee and regular). I told a bar manager trying to charge $75 for Black OPS.
The only way you would know if one is falling off is if you had it fresh/semi-fresh and then are lucky enough to try it again now. I had it last weekend for the first time and it was still SPECTACULAR! Falling off/ spectacular, whatever you want to call it, I'll take it! I wouldn't pay $75 cash for it right now, but I would trade quite a bit of beer for one...
This doesn't help, since Black Ops sucks. To OP: I think it's really great for a beer. I've not drunk it so many times I would argue it is getting better or worse, it is simply delicious. Yes I'd pay $75 for it.
1.) 2010 2.) Around $45 3.) Had one a week ago with some friends who all had one together maybe a year ago, and everyone agreed that it was better a year ago. It is still drinking very well right now, but it lost some of that amazing barrel flavor that it used to have. 4.) Personally I wouldn't spend $75 on it, but that's probably fair. I'd spend the money on King Henry before BCS Rare at this point.
Just had a Rare on Saturday and it was still spectacular, I'd imagine now that it's been nearly 3 years since it was bottled and 5 years since the beer was actually brewed that there could be some bottle variation at this point but I'd pay $75 for this in a heartbeat.
we just did 09-12 two months ago and i believe the consensus was 09>11>12>10, with 09 at the top by a large margin.
Considering you're "newer" with a 2012 join date, $75 isn't bad at all. It was $50+ for a lot of people over two years ago and in a lot of places it didn't sit around more than a few months.
How's it drinkin' flowchart needz ta be a permanent sticky at the top of beer talk/cellaring forum. I'm surprised nobody has told him to just go to Kentucky and grab a Rare off the shelf.
i only had the BCBS and i loved it, are the other ones really that much better? or is it just the little differences that make the other ones a little more enjoyable like the coffee one?
My joke was to sway the OP into not buying the Rare for $75 from whomever and give me the sellers info so that I could swoop in and buy it. Apparently only a few got the joke. I would absolutely without question buy Rare for $75 if the OP has the chance.
Straight is my least favorite. Pretty big differences. The fruited ones ( Cherry and Bramble ) are the most different from the straight.
thanks for all the opinions. beer guy from this store just called me (ive been there before, its in NY) its gone. had an entire case sitting since 2010 just decided recently to put it out. i just saw the listing today. F#@K. oh well. doesnt matter but i wish he would have updated the listing when it sold out, that way i wouldnt have seen it at all.
no i called before posting, beer guy wasnt in yet. i was pretty sure i was going to get if available, he said its been gone for days. what a let down, this would have been my first whale i suppose.
