Best of 2012 - Aus beers

Discussion in 'Australia & New Zealand' started by heygeebee, Dec 4, 2012.

  1. Folks,

It's December... was just wondering what really caught your eye this year (or should that be your palate?) as the standout new releases of the year?

Stuff released for the first time in 2012...

    Seven Sheds Stella IPA
    Rocks IPA
    Wicked Elf Porter
    Riverside 44 Amber Ale
    HopDog Hyper Hyper Coffee Pants

    Of the collaborations...

    Bridge Road Mikkeller Dark Harvest
    Temple Weihenstephan Unifikator Weizenbock

Watermelon Warhead. It is the alpha and the omega, the first and the last.

Saying that, gratuitous bible reference aside (it's Christmas soon), I'm with Mr K on the Unifikator.

I'm absolutely shot at remembering this sort of stuff, but Mr K mentions two I really did enjoy.
Seven Sheds Stella - supremely delicious hops
Dark Harvest - so drinkable and so complex

Hmmm, Wicked Elf Porter was good. Watermelon Warhead was fantastic. Hyper Hyper Coffee Pants and Dark Harvest I certainly agree with. Unifikator was a highlight down in Melbourne.

Looking at my reviews, the Wig & Pen Beetroot Berliner comes in at number 1 for Australian beers this year.

Wish Willie would make this regularly, would be my Aussie go-to beer
  14. Red Duck Gnaume
    Bridge/Mikkeller Dark Harvest
    Red Duck The Bear
Bridge Rd B2 Mach 2 (much better than the first version)
    Red Hill Double Barrel Temptation
Could probably go ten more - plenty of good stuff.
  15. hard to remember all however the stand outs that come to mind are:
La Sirene - clearly the best saison brewed in Oz
B2 Mach 2 - this is my favourite beer of the year taking into account the quality and price, ended up drinking 8 litres from a 30l keg in growlers
Watermelon Warhead - a beer the wife liked helped me get more Feral visits than previous years
Hagenbeck - this and the travelling monk are two great new WA brews
Black Lung 2 - loved the original and this was even better
Temple Bicycle beer - favourite session brew
Before the Dawn / Midnight IPA - two great black IPA's

no doubt ive missed more than a few
  16. Same as last year for me. Hop Hog & Wild Thing.
  17. Parrotshake

    Parrotshake Savant (365) Australia Nov 29, 2008

    Dark Harvest
    Bacchus War & Peat
    La Sirene
    Freaks & Geeks

Mornington Peninsula, Hopdog and Temple each made a few things I liked a lot. Stone & Wood limited releases were all good too, except the Jasper Ale.

forgot to mention Brewboys Hoppapotamus. Just a brilliant IPA, Pale ale, whatever. Just a fun, hoppy beer to drink
  31. Thorogoods Billy B's Dark Apple.

Catches my eye, with my upper/back palate every year. Damn shame we can't review it on this site. Its a Flanders Oud Bruin on steroids for me. I took some to Belgiium recently and passed it around, with amazing responses from hardcore belgian beer geeks ! Love live Billy B's
