Heady Topper clone recipe

There is also a BYO article about late hopping written by telejunkie with a clone attempt. They were so close if it was not side by side I would not have known they were different, especially once they warmed up.

The sample from the test jar was solid and it smelled great during whirlpool.

Having powered through my last 4 pack of Heady a few weeks back, I had been waiting for ECY to release ECY29 but they recently posted something about focusing on other yeast strains for the future, so I pitched US-05 to see if I can coax peach out of it by fermenting at 62*. I'm not expecting it to be a clone, but if it's remotely close I'll be happy.

It really has to do with good handling of the beer throughout the process, plus proper timing of hops & plenty of Simcoe...I'm still working on the water aspect.

 

Hey guys, I haven't been around here in a while, but I thought I'd come back with my 4.0 recipe and the results, which are very good. I have been working on this recipe for about 9 months now, and I think I might be done, but for a few very minor tweaks on future brews, but nothing revolutionary.

This was the closest I've ever gotten to Heady and I've had 3 people say it tasted just like it. Here's the recipe:

The hop aroma is spot on. I want just a little more orange flavor, I think I might move a little Amarillo to the 5 min or the flameout. Otherwise, body is fantastic, taste is amazing, etc. I really think the caramalt and fermenting at 68 are super important, it really gives this thing a unique taste.

Thank you to whoever found out about Apollo hops and the turbinado, I think telejunkie was on the Apollo. If not for that, wouldn't be at this point right now. Thanks also to the guys over at my thread on HBT for over 90 pages of discussion on this clone. The remaining parts of the recipe differ from the BYO clone based on my conversations with John at the Alchemist, I have verified caramalt (17.5 srm), turbinado, hop extract, and most of the hops. Also the OG/FG numbers were verified.

It's done, I drank it last night, it's spot on. I am just happy to be done with it, I tried 14 different recipes until I got to this one. Now I can move on to other beers and keep this latest recipe in my stash to brew every couple of months.

 

Sorry about that, the link to your blog post as well as to the HBT forum is all just a few posts above, actually in several places throughout this short thread. The recipe has no context w/o knowing that it came from there. I know many people, like jmich24, who don't facebook or tweet for any number of reasons. But it is your recipe, so I apologize for posting it and doing so w/o the link. Looking forward to brewing this. Thanks again for all your hard work.
