I'll be working/staying in the Rockville/Gaithersburg area next month and would like some recommendations on a good shop to find some great east coast brews to take back home to CO. Thanks

Everything bum732 said. I live and work in the heart of this god forsaken black hole called Montgomery County also, and I rarely ever buy beer here. I make the drive to Frederick or DC/VA to buy all my beer. Not only sticker shock, but old ass beers once they finally hit the shelves.

I echo Bum's and Skinsfans' sentiments. I've lived in Rockville/Gaithersburg for 3+ years and I don't bother shopping here anymore. The selection is lacking and the prices are absurd. If you must, check out Belby's. Selection is alright, not great. Prices are probably slightly lower compared to competitors.

I also live & work in Rockville - 100% agree with everything above.

Pretty much go any direction away from Montgomery County and you will find better prices/selection.

Most importantly - enjoy the east coast beers! There's some tasty stuff coming out of this region.

Thanks for all the info - not really what I wanted to hear, but it confirmed what I had experienced when I was there for a couple days in January. I did get to the Dogfish Head pub for dinner one of the nights I was there - looks like I'll have to hit that one up again. Since I'll be flying into Dulles, I can stop in VA along the way, any good places in McLean or that vicinity?

I think most people buy the staple beers in their local store when you live in the area. You go into PG County to buy volume, DC for better/rarer stuff, or across the Potomac Ocean for a mix of the two if you happen to frequent that area.
You can find local stuff - Heavy Seas, Flying Dog, DuClaw, Dogfish - at most stores.

DogFish is good for a drink and an OK meal. I think they have to sell their own beer to the County and then buy it back to pour it.

If you can get into Howard County, there are a few places with a good tap selection. Shouldn't be too far of a drive.

Thanks Dude - much appreciated! Our Whole Foods here in Colorado don't have beer or wine - but I just remembered the Wegmans there have a great beer selection- any Wegmans in the area? I know there's one in Herndon, but not familiar with any other ones.

theres a wgmans not too far from Dulles in Ashburn. just up route 28 from the airport. if you can get into vienna/fairfax then your two best options are the Whole Foods in Fair Lakes and Norm's for an independant shop. there's a whole foods just up the street from norms but its selection lags behind fair lakes.
