Started off with Daleside's Jewel of Ripon, and am now on Outlaw's Mad Hatter. Tasty - an IPA with jasmine and green tea, though the hops dominate this one.

Boooo - shame. Still, I supose it's not really that surprising - look what happened to Hardcore at Sainsburys. I don't think the general public are into the really hoppy brews, and supermarkets probably just make decisions based on sales figures....

In other news, Partizan's 9-Grain Porter. Nomalicious....

The legacy of the weirdy beardy type camra members. My friends dad - about 60 odd - complained that a regular bitter from a local brewery was "too hoppy". He, like many, seems to just like a general "beer" taste, in his ale.

Possibly, though I suspect CAMRA members aren't that keen on bottled beers anyway. I reckon the average 'adventurous' beer drinker will have tastes that encompass hoppy brews like SNPA, but not much beyond. Torpedo is a step too far....

Finishing up the evening with a Vitus - yeah!

From one of my books about Medieval England:

"On Richard I's crusade the natives were astonished at the amount (of ale) the English consumed, and their custom of draining toasts to the sound of horns and trumpets. Similarly Gerald of Wales in 1199 emphasized their reputation for drunkenness and double-dealing. The author of the Dialogue of the Exchequer blamed the frequency of crime in England on "the innumerate riches of the kingdom and the innate drunkenness of the inhabitants.""

    Go history!

The Neolithic Scots used to put hallucinogenic herbs and plants in their beer. One (possibly) actually contained an early form of cannabis!

More Scandinavian craziness with Mikkeller coffe ipa. Along with the Baltic Frontier, I would say they have the edge on experimental beer.

Though lots of countries get credit:
A Danish beer brewed in a Belgian brewery using American hops and Ethiopian coffee from a Swedish roasting house

A good beer that one. I thought it was too crazy to work, but Mikkeller seem to have blended the components perfectly.

So far I've had a St. Peter's Golden ale and am now quaffing a Daleside Stout....

Yeah, it tastes wrong at first because you're so used to the coffee in a beer being in a stout, then it starts to merge and the coffee bitterness and hop bitterness work so well as one.
