I have scanned the recent Picture posting threads, but most are for posting to Forums. I have some photos taken with my phone (Razr Maxx) of bottles for beers with no photos. My photos are being rejected, I think because they are too large; the instructions say:
    • Max file size is 20 KB and be exactly 150 x 300 pixels .
Mine are 700kb+ and certainly not the pixel range. I'm posting from my home computer after saving the photos. Any suggestions of cheap or free programs I can use to resize my photos? I do NOT see a photo size option in my phone camera setup (but I'll take suggestions about setup from Razr users too). I'm hoping to not have to take all these again.
    Thanks!

Something similar has been happening to me recently, but figure I didn't make the rules, so I'm not complaining.

I take the pix and resize down to 150 x 300 pixels, but still notice that the file size is about 20.5 kb or sometimes 21 kb, I think to myself, oh well, I tried and think "wow, that's pretty scrutinous to have a pic exactly 150 x 300" and less than 20 kb. Oh well, no skin off my back, I don't make the rules.

There's a part of me that wants to ask the editors, mods and the Bros a request to change this.

Sorry Todd and Jason, the editors and the mods, don't take this the wrong way, and please don't take this as complaining. I'm just not a professional photographer, but I keep trying and one of these days, I'll be able to post the way you want it.

Here is a good free photo editor that should be able to do anything you could possibly want for posting photos to BA:

    http://www.irfanview.com/

I use this on my personal computer, and my work currently has IT pre-install this on all our computers, so it is a safe, reputable program.

I would dig bigger hi-res photo abilities. More detail = moe betta.

Thanks for the suggestion; sadly, although irfanview looks like a nice program and works otherwise, it goes through the process of shrinking the file until I try to save it, then needs a plug-in that will not install on my computer/Windows version. I tried it several times and need to move on. Any suggestions from anyone on starting with a smaller format straight from the phone camera?

Once you re-size the pixel size of the image file using Irfanview using the ReSize and then Crop tools, you should then just need to reduce the file size. You can use a free website like this one: http://www.imageoptimizer.net

Trying to upload a photo now for a beer, and I can't get it to work with the stock Windows editors. I could download a program, but that's getting into "too much work" territory. It'd be better if the site auto resized the photos.

Thanks for the file reduction website info, jmdrpi, but I'm unable to save my pixel resized photos right now because I can't install a plug-in. I will remember this site for the future. Going to pack up my bottles for now until I buy a new camera, which will allow me to start off with the right sized photo.

    More detail=larger file

I believe these photos are hosted on BeerAdvocate servers, so more shit on them would be a bad thing.

Thanks Rutager! It took me a while to figure it out (choosing just resize chops off pieces of the photo, but shrinking it and then resizing worked OK. Takes a bit of manipulation to get exactly 150 x 300, but will now be able to upload a bunch of photos. Successfully posted my first one.
