I have not aged any IPA for very long myself nor do I care to. But I do plan on keeping around a couple NN for the next month or so as I already enjoy the malt character coming out a bit more.

Picked up a bottle of Smuttynose Big A IPA & Great Divide Double Hercules IPA off the shelf at a liquor store w/o looking at the dates. Turned out both were over a year old, and had zero hop flavor left, just a very boozy taste...

i forgot i had a 6 pack of hopslam, as soon as i found it, i said oh crap. put it in the fridge for another month before i ended up finishing them. share a couple with a buddy. it was definitely tasty. you could definitely taste the honey, it was sweet, but not too sweet. i wouldn't mind trying it again. fresh is also great of course.

How long can Nugget Nectar last??? I am storing away 2 cases for a special occasion in 7 months. Think it will still be okay? 65 degrees and no sunlight avg temp

I'm sure it'll be fine if you like your Ambers on the malty side? What is the occasion if you don't mind my asking? maybe you can find something more available at that time?

I aged some heady topper for two weeks once. Even then I felt like I was pushing it.

I PRAY this does not mean that you have Heady Topper sitting around waiting for 7 months to be opened?!? What you must understand is that IPA and DIPAs are made to be drank as fresh as possible (experimentation related to thread topic not withstanding) and buying these beers only to sit on them for a "special occasion" will only result in everything that was special about the beer in the first place being sucked out of it.

I would suggest you start gathering some more ageable brews now, tons of great Imperial Stouts and Barleywines around righ now and make your play for the IPAs no earlier than 2 months out from the event (and make sure they are fresh when you get them). Sure flashing cans of HT will impress the beer geeks but if it's past it's prime you are doing your guests and the brewer a disservice by serving it at all.

Oh and if you are trying to extend the life of your IPA keep them fridge cold, NOT in a 65 degree cellar environment. Heard debate over fridge light, to me I think it is of little/no concern but if it makes you feel better just unscrew the damn bulb.

NOOO!! Heady topper will NOT be sitting around, strategically planning a pick up 2-4 weeks before to pick up. Thanks for the other advice!! I am working on acquisitions!

I've aged DFH 120 for 5 years... but that's generally the exception to the rule.

There is a place near where I work that still has DFH Squall, and I shudder to think how that tastes now.

Do you commit heinous crimes (murder/rape/pedophilia/rape/incest) in order to learn that doing them will get you in trouble/arrested or do you take other people's word for it?

When it comes to something that's against the law, I'll take other people's word for it. When it comes to enjoying a product I paid for...quite frankly I can do whatever I want with it.

    Like a prostitute in NYC.

    Gotcha.

I live for slippery slope stuff. No win situation. I was just making light of the fact that you choose to ignore the plethora of information out there. If you want to see the results for yourself that's one thing, but to want to see the result and expect different results is another.

Just curious about something in your article. You stated:
And then you show a picture of Hopslam side by side:
It appears to me like the aged 2011 looks far more clear according to your image description. I'm just curious which it is?

You could keep one of the cases in the fridge and open one from time to time and see how it progresses. At least you will be drinking good for a little while.

was sent a year old hoplsam n tried it against a fresh bottle, it was nothing close to fresh,

fresh botle was great and the aged had no hop profile whats so ever

def would not recommend aging any my mistake or on purpose, just not a good idea
