My buddies are going to Munchen for the springfest and I would love to meet them. Problem is I can only afford at this time a cheap flight- airfare is the main problem- but I am traveling alone and don't really cares what happens to me (but want to get there)- two factors on my side. Any suggestions?

Fly stand by? Fly into a cheaper city (Brussels/Rome/Zurich, etc) and take the train? Kickstarter campaign?

You should contact Chris (BA cu29) and ask about his possible flights:

I *may* fly through Berlin to get to Munich in May. Cheap airfare.....but a nearly 6 hour layover in Berlin. Is it worth leaving Tegel airport to search out some beer (and perhaps a sight or two) during the long layover? Where would I go? I've never been to Berlin.

    Cheers!

    Chris”

    Cheers!

P.S. Please report back how cheap the flight you obtain is.

It seems no flights nowadays are really that "cheap", especially from the US to Germany. I fly to Munich out of Milwaukee or Chicago, and airfares have been averaging around $1100.00 for a flight in May.

I found an Air Berlin flight from Chicago to Berlin to Munich for $690.00. The hitch is that there is an almost 6 hour layover in Berlin on the way to Munich, and then a 17 hour overnight layover on the way home. But I really am tempted by the 17 hour layover because I'll get a much better chance to explore Berlin a little more, kind of a bonus at the back end of my trip.

That price is obviously dependent on which day one flys to and from Germany. I found it on Travelocity and one other website, but not on the Air Berlin webby.

By the way, the cheapest flight I have ever had to Germany was $500.00 in September (Oktoberfest time) of 2007.

We had $399 on Icelandic Air ten years ago, but that was ten years ago and a layover in Iceland.

Chris, someone mentioned flying into Northern Italy- wish I could remember who it was. $599 I am going to Munich, $1,100 I am not.

Hey -- I hope that isn't you with Babe Heffron in that avatar -- you're too young to drink, even in Germany! :grinning:

Yeah, I was once able to get a flight from Charlotte, NC to Muenchen for $700... In 2009.

    Now? $1100, easy. Horrible.

Nice to see that he respects his elders (and that's not at all facetious). And a damn fine one to befriend.

If you're strong enough to hoist a Maßkrug you are old enough to drink.

I saw many places with a 17 year-old drinking age in my travels.

Then again, I also saw a grandmother order a Maß of Dunkel at the H-B München, 2 smaller glasses, then dole out rations to her 2 pre-teen grandchildren -- so I guess it's all in who you know! :grinning:

Well, the legal age for drinking beer is 16 but when your parents order beer for you nobody asks. I had my first beer at 14 I think. I guess my Dad finally had enough of me constantly taking sips from his glass, hahaha.

Probably because you drank the majority in the "sips!" :grinning:

You have to work your way up to lifting a Maßkrug!

Below is how I did it:

“My father’s beer of choice when I was a kid was Piels Genuine Draft in 16 ounce returnable bottles. I have no specifics on how much a case of Piles cost then but I am sure that it was one of the cheapest beers available. When my mother was out of sight he would ask me if I wanted a “swig” of beer. Lifting a 16 ounce heavy duty bottle with beer was a bit of a heavy lift but I would take a “swig”. My father made me the man I am of today!”

    Prost!
