Now we'll pick a more specific base malt among the Generic 2-Row, Pale Ale, and Pilsner malts. This poll will be a straight plurality vote, i.e. most votes wins, whether it's a majority or not. If you are concerned that votes for the general type of malt you prefer might be split between two similar malts, consider jumping on a bandwagon with your vote.

This poll will only be open for 48 hours. Based on the first one, almost all the votes happened in that timeframe.

As said elsewhere, I've always blended base malt blends in IPAs, including Rahr 2-row pale, Briess pale Ale Malt, Weyermann and Castle Pils, Weyermann Munich. The one I liked the most had 58% Castle Pils in it, hence my vote. But honestly, not a strong preference.

OK before I vote, WTF is the difference between NA 2-Row / Pils & Pale Ale malts?

At my LHBS I can only buy NA 2-Row (which they call Pilsner).

Normally Id choose MO, but I jumped on the Golden Promise bandwagon. Theres just nothing like the malt depth of those english grains in an IPA - dont even need a crystal when using them

Love GP in an IPA, but I generally use NA 2 row so I went with that.

Ditto. Rahr 2-row, Rahr White Wheat, Weyermann Munich, Dingeman's Aromatic Malt comprise my go to grain bill (West Coast IPA).

Rahr Pale Ale malt for me. It has the right blend of flavors and isn't too toasty or sweet. So I chose NA pale ale malt. IMO Maris Otter is too toasty. My second choice is GP

The stuff labeled "Brewer's Malt" is typically a little lighter than pale ale malts, about 2 SRM vs. 3-4 SRM. Pilsner can be even lighter.

For the example of Briess Malting:

    · Pilsner: 1.2 L
    · 2-row: 1.8 L
    · Pale: 3.5 L

    Cheers!

Although the type of 2 row barley plays a role...the lovibond indicates/correlates with how much toasting/kilning it received

I have gone to almost exclusively NA 2 Row (Pale Ale Malt) between 2.8-3.5 L, but still use a little Aromatic, Munich, and usually British C-55 and/or light Carastan in IPAs...unless there's a deal out there I can't pass up.

Went with NA Pale Ale Malt. Use it as the base in almost all my beers. Enough character of it own w/o getting too toasty.

Golden Promise for me. My base malt of choice in almost all styles that I brew. Nice clean, deep, slighty sweet malty goodness.

Is it the same type of barley? What's the blend? That's the real issue with these generic definitions of malt. The maltster calls what I have "Pilsner Malt" FYI. That and everyone knows that Canadian Malts are better

NA 2-Row for me. We can add more sweetness with other malt. Thanks.

I really don’t know the answer to your question.

The spec sheet for all three malts state: “Produced in the U.S.A. from AMBA/BMBRI recommended 2-Row malting varieties”.

The above reads like 'abba dabba jabba wabba' to me. Do you know what the above means?

    Cheers!

I haven't done GP.. I normal just go for the cheaper Rahr 2 row at my store... Like 80 cents a pound or something.

That said.. I voted for maris otter. Love it in an IPA and figure the flavor would be good no matter what we vote.
