Sad news. Mahars was always a great place to grab a beer. I hope it retains a little bit of its character with the new ownership. I'd love to see a simple yet updated pub remain (especially those bathrooms..lol). I'm just hoping it won't be a "Juniors Jr.". I love Juniors, not knocking it at alll, but keep the flashy jukebox and 50 TV's a few doors down and keep this a quiet spot where you can grab a few good beers and carry on a conversation without yelling.

Dang, that's a big letdown. Mahar's was where I first started drinking better beer at the end of my college days. It was the social focal point for my main group of friends, and the biggest contributor to my beer education. Lots of great memories.

One of the originals 24 years strong was a great beer bar before there were "beer bars" like there are now at least in upstate NY. At least they still have the place in Castelton, NY which is a nice quite beer bar worth the visit if you haven't been yet.

24 years is a long time to run a business like that.

That sucks, Marhar's is right up there on my all time favorite bars list.

Yeah, I read the article. I was just wondering if anyone who lived locally had driven by or stopped in since the news. I was thinking about going up this weekend and visiting a few friends who still live in the area.

I went there on Wednesday night with a buddy so he can pick up his mug to take home. Staff did not know when their last day would be. It was pretty busy.. I'm sure a lot of people will be heading down for their last pint in the next week or 2. Draft list was very slim. Guinness, Weinstephaner, Hoegaarden. 4 Wandering Star casks (IPA, Rye, USSR and Mild)... thats it. New owners can't evict until at least the end of Feburary, so they potentially can stay open a while longer, but I'm not sure if they will. Looks like they started packing up.. bunch of tap handles have been taken down.

On a side note, as of Wednesday night Juniors had Goose Island BCS on tap ($8 for around a 10oz ish pour).. Damn that stuff is good.

Was planning on making the trip up there one last time this Saturday, but I think it's officially closed.

    Can anyone confirm?

You have plenty of time. They're not closing until after February 14.

Very sad to hear but let's face it, they burned one too many bridges with the distributors in the area. Their selection the last 2 yrs has been paltry at best and a shadow of what it once was. Not to mention the service at times was extremely lackluster, bill grew on me but I had many friends who weren't as into beer as I was who flat out refused to go to mahars because of the service.
