My dad and brother aren't BMC drinkers but not craft aficionados either; mostly they drink pale ales, german/czech lagers and pilsners, and so on. When I gave them my glass of Supplication to try, they thought it smelled like Branston pickle.

Technically, any beer not brewed according to Reinheitsgebot can be considered "fancy."

I wonder if it's the bitterness or the hoppiness that people object to, I would guess the former.

I'm always somewhat amused when I find an old American beer ad such as this one:

    http://www.americanartarchives.com/elvgren_schlitz_l14spt42.jpg

IBU levels for a basic American adjunct lager in the 60s would have been in the 20s or high tens I'm guessing, though if Schlitz wanted to distinguish itself from its competition by having less "harsh bitterness", then I guess it might have been in the mid to low tens even back then, who knows. Considering how successful they were I guess one shouldn't be too surprised when a 30IBU beer such as Samuel Adams Boston Lager is percieved to be too bitter (which I'm guessing is what they are really objecting to).

Once I let an acquaintance of mine try a sip of Dales Pale Ale out of a can, and he told me "It tastes like Coors to me". I promptly asked for a sip of his Breckenridge Agave Wheat, which he was bragging about some man in the store recommending it to him, and how great it was, and I told him "It tastes like tequila, I don't like it."

As a general rule, IBU can be a deceiving measurement depending on how well the beer is balanced and your individual palate. If you are used to drinking Bud Light, then the well-balanced nature of SABL will likely still be too much. Adjunct lagers have decreased in overall IBUs, but unless you are drinking light beer, hop notes are still present. I haven't been able to see any definitive IBU measurement for Schlitz Gusto, which is is one of the more widely available adjunct lagers with a more definitive hop profile. I would guess it's closer to the high teens and lower twenties.

Indeed, although it's at least measurable and quantifiable which gives you an idea, though of course the malt bill will influence one's appreciation of the bitterness greatly. When discussing the hop profiles as opposed to bitterness of macro pale or adjunct lagers one inevitably ventures off into the land of subjectivity to some degree, it will be hard to achieve a consensus as to the hop profile or taste of a particular beer (to some degree due to the general perception that adjunct lagers are devoid of hop taste, which makes people less inclined to describe such a taste perception, imo).

It would indeed be interesting to see where they have landed with the Schlitz gusto in terms of an IBU to make it more old school, 20s or high teens as you say. They've started to sell Schlitz gusto in a 4.5% version here in Sweden through the monopoly which I'm interested in trying but as of yet you have to pre-order and buy an entire 24 pack of it which is rather expensive.

I really think some people are looking for something flavorless that gets the job done. I deal with finicky customers in a college town who buy nothing but vodka. It gets mixed with some type of soda or juice until it tastes like candy. They perceive Bud light as a good beer because it lacks any real flavor. Bud Light lime exists for the same reason, its closer to candy than beer. Until your perception of what beer should taste like changes, you'll keep drinking rice water and calling it refreshing.
