The first time I had Bigfoot was in 1984 at a fund raising tasting for our local public TV/Radio station KQED. The label on the bottle was in black and white and I want to say the cap was a plain gold cap. I have the bottle packed away in my garage.

Yeah I'm getting to old fart range but not there yet:wink:

If I had known caps were collectable I would have saved them with the bottles...

And so when are you opening the 1984 Bigfoot? Do you have the whole Bigfoot lineup stashed away? :grinning:

I wish I had a vertical! Back then it was a brewery and/or Chico only release, we couldn't get it in the South Bay:angry:

Here's a B&W scan of the Bigfoot label, circa 1983:

The use of "Strong Ale" might suggest it was a California-only release, since the then BATF probably wouldn't have allowed "strong" in the type name of a beer. (Altho' they did allow "strong" as a descriptor to differentiate brewers' beers that came in both "under 3.2 abw" and regular strength versions).

Can never remember when the BATF started allowing "Barley Wine" and "Barleywine" on US beer labels but it still has to be further described as "Barley Wine (Style) Ale " or similar wording. Fritz Maytag was the first to fight that battle, inventing the combined wording "barleywine" for his Old Foghorn, when regulators knocked down "barley wine". Maytag also claimed he was able to that because the first bottlings were CA-only releases.

Not attempting to bump this one but I was in the brewery on 12/28/12 and the 30th anniversary was scheduled for release any day. I got in the conversation with 3 employees while checking out of the gift shop. They purposefully don't give hard release dates so they aren't inundated when a release occurs.

I'm going to check in again this week (I'm a Chico local and checking in is fairly easy). It also gives me an excuse to pick up some of the brewery only releases that I cant get anywhere else in town.

I would do a ton of horrible things for a pre 2005 bigfoot, just saying.

Good friend and local beer guy has a few of each year Bigfoot back to 1986, and from 2001-up at least a full case. I may rob him one day.
