First off, thanks for all the awesome responses that already exist in this thread about breweries, brew pubs, etc. I've got tons of ideas and don't need to re-ask those questions again.

But here's one I havent seen addressed. I'm coming to Portland/Eugene for the first time in a few weeks, and I definitely want to bring some stuff home to Texas with me. Are there places in Portland where I can easily obtain bottle shippers? Or should I plan on bringing something with me? I was even thinking maybe of ordering some shippers and having them delivered to my hotel while I'm there. I'm hoping to bring 12-18 bottles home with me, so I need something better than just stuffing them in my suitcase.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

    Ken

Rose City Wine Storage. They have used ones for cheap.

    Ken:
On the 1-10 'weird' scale, that question is about a 1.1... just sayin', you can go much 'weirder' in PDX!

To elaborate on LJBerg's reply, RCWS is just across the river east of downtown (below the Morrison Bridge) & only a few of blocks from places like Hair of the Dog and Cascade Barrel House.

If you want a place in downtown, I've purchased 6 & 12-bottle shippers at Vinopolis on SW Washington. They are new boxes with cardboard (vs. foam) dividers and I recall they run $10-14. Guys are really nice there (PS: Vinopolis only sells wine, no beer - but the wine selection is great if you're interested)

    Cheers,
    Brian

I saw some at The Container Store in Bellevue I would assume they have them at the store in Tigard as well.

Actually, I have to redact what I said, because I always get this backwards. RCWS is the place not to go for cheap shippers. Theirs run about 15-20.

Portland Wine Storage, which is near Burnside, is the place to go for cheap shippers. Sorry for the confusion.

Great - thanks so much for the helpful responses! You know you have an issue when THESE are the types of things you worry about when planning a trip. :stuck_out_tongue:

But there is so much great beer there that just doesnt find its way down south that I need to take advantage of the opportunity! Any more suggestions would be appreciated, but it sounds like I'll be able to get this done, which is a huge weight off my shoulders.

Willamette Wine Storage in NW will sell you a twelve bottle styro for eight bucks. They're used, but in decent shape and they have a lot of them.

Offer to bring a couple Texas beers to open at a local establishment like Beer Mongers and I'm sure one of us could come up with a wine shipper for you. Win-win for everyone.

Shoot! Wish I had checked back in on this thread before I came, because I totally would have done this. Next time!

Thanks again to everyone for the help on this one. I got a 12-bottle shipper at Willamette for $8 and everything made it home great (despite being opened by TSA)

Living in the middle of nowhere, I've managed to develop a pretty nice flight system that has worked really well for 14 bombers - I have a small rubbermaid action packer, which perfectly fits 14 individually bubble wrapped bombers, with some extra padding for good measure. I've used this same setup many times, and have yet to have an issue.

Yup. that's the one. I also put a layer of 1/2" open cell foam pad on the bottom just to give it a bit of extra padding. When I'm making a trip that I know I'll want to bring back beers, I just take it with me. I've been reusing the same bubblewrap for about 7 trips...
