Just in. Here's 2013 details on the new Night Shift Barrel Society to help raise funds for their future growth.

In a nutshell, you pay $250 in return for:
    • 14 bottles of barrel-aged beer that we’d retail for $15 each = $210
    • 2 glasses that we’d retail for $8 each = $16
    • 1 T-Shirt that we’d retail for $15
    • $4 for online processing fees
    • $5 to help us make that end-of-the-year party as awesome as possible (includes two tickets to the party)
    • 2013 Night Shift Barrel Society Membership Card
No shipping. "The barrel society is currently designed for local residents." Limited to 400 memberships.

For more info, see below and read their FAQs: http://www.nightshiftbrewing.com/si...arrel-society/night-shift-barrel-society-faq/

"Ok, sounds interesting – how does it work? We’ve designed the NightShift Barrel Society to function much like a typical farm’s CSA (community supported agriculture)."

Translation: Give us $100,000 to brew beer.

    Hmm... Interesting...

The price is reasonable. The question is will the beers be good enough to match the price?

Interesting how much they are starting to resemble The Bruery. Eclectic beers, taproom, now a Reserve Society of barrel aged beers clearly modeled after The Bruery... Smart.

It would be nice to see them come out with their own "Black Tuesday" first, but I'm leaning towards splitting with a friend and giving them a shot.

I like Night Shift and have enjoyed their beers to date, but my reaction is similar to the Oncemade project. They don't have a track record in barrel aging and they are asking folks to pre-pay for a series of beers. I don't know that I would make that kind of commitment for the Bruery if I lived close enough to get their beers, and I would definitely wait and see how things turn out prior to investing in this.

And asking them to pay full retail too. Heck, even at the bottle shop you get a discount for buying 6+ bottles, and you a) don't have to pay months in advance and b) don't have to gamble that the beer is good ($15-good) without the opportunity to read about it or taste it.

That said, if I were in their shoes, I can't say I'd structure it a lot differently.

I hated the Oncemade project but have much less problem with this. I completely see your point and agree that it would be nice to see more of a track record. However, at least what they have done so far has been interesting. Either way, at least I don't feel like there is extreme price markup going on here, or crazy packaging costs, and 100% of the money is going to the brewery.

I'm in The Bruery Reserve Society... While they obviously have a strong history behind them now, it's still a roll of the dice on many of their new beers. You win some, you lose some... the key is to just not overpurchase on the unknown.

Which, is ultimately why splitting this strikes me as reasonable - I'd probably try one of most of those beers anyway. If they all turn out to suck I'm not out much more money than I would be just buying 7 bottles off the shelves. And if they turn out to be great, then I've got the beers and I'm already locked into the society before the hype train hits in 2014.

Bruery Reserve lays out the beers that will be included though, right?

I'm considering this, but I'd like to know what I'm getting first.

Half and half. With The Bruery, the old standby's you know about, but the new ones are sometimes named, sometimes described, and sometimes neither. This isn't terribly different, in that they do say a bit about what you're getting:

    • 2 sours (Flanders Red/Golden Brett/Fruit-aged)
    • 2 imperials (Tripel/Barleywine/Coffee Stout – to be decided)
    • 1 barrel-aged IPA
    • 1 beer 100% brett-fermented (wild yeast strain)
    • And the 7th beer will be decided by you!
The Bruery RS is a little different in that you aren't joining just for the beers included in the membership package, but also for access to 10x that amount of beer. For example, you get 2 bottles of Black Tuesday included in membership fees, but also the option to purchase 5 more bottles at 15% off. So slightly apples to oranges, but Night Shift does say you have first access to extras, and I'd assume that's the direction they're going with the program long term.

I'm definitely tempted but, I'm thinking that if the hype train was going to make a stop at Night Shift, it already would have come. I haven't had any of their -bal beers so, I'm not confident that the beers won't be ill but, $250 is a steep price to find out.

But how are you going to split that 1 t-shirt?

Totally fair and partially agreed. The Bruery's initial beers weren't exactly bringing the thunder either though. They were interesting, but it wasn't until Black Tuesday that they really arrived. I don't see Night Shift being in that different of a spot at this point in their life.

Pass it back and forth on alternating weeks? Realistically you can't, but I'd be willing to concede the $7.50 as a Christmas present...

Yeah, but would a retailer give you the bragging rights of a classy looking membership card with your name on it?

Id be interested if they released more than 1 barrel aged beer so far. Or if I liked more than 1 beer from them.
