I traded a bunch of St.Arnolds Stuff for a Fou Foune and a Black Damnation to a guy in Brussels. It all depends on what people can't or can get and want

White Chocolate started off with a 6 bottle allocation. (Reserve Society only) Plus we got 1 bottle for free. Finally, The Bruery put it back on sale to RS members with no bottle limit until it sold out. Basically you could end up with a boat load of it if you had the cash.

My point is, White Chocolate isn't a wale. It's being released again next year and the allocation will probably double.

Just curious—do you want Texas to produce a bunch of whales?

If so, why? Is it like a regional status thing?

I can't even land a 4-pack of BCBS anymore with brewery only releases (i.e. Freetail) from Texas, so yea, I 'd like it if our beers were just a little more hyped.

No one wants to trade for Texas beer.

So, you want your local beer to be more buzzed about, so that you can trade for beer you can't buy in your area?

I don't get it either. There is a bunch of great beer in Texas that not a lot of people know or care about. So what? I will take my cask Ellissa, or Pecan Porter, or anything Live Oak, or Real Ale, or... and be happy. I guess the other people here can sulk that they can't trade for "rare" anything

Lol... Didn't you know that you can't buy at your local bottle shop tastes better than beer you can.

That's what I'm saying! Trust me, I'm dying to get some PtE and feel ridiculously fortunate to have been to the Alchemist Cannery and Hill Farmstead in person (they really are that good, if anyone's considering visiting), and I'm constantly asking when such-and-such brewery will be available where I am, but for me I think regionalism and local scenes is the future of beer advocacy.

I have nothing against trading, and in fact I'd really like to get into it (a little) when I'm not poor and moving around so much, but I think it's awesome that Texas has such a unique beer scene. I say good for you guys, though I do totally understand it must be frustrating as shit if you're really, really into trading. Just don't take the local stuff for granted!

I don't know what's gotten into me, no idea how I could've forgotten that! It's like, what, rule #2 of Beer Advocacy? The Grass is Always Greener.

Whale status is moot. Too many people to craft beer are starting to make finding regular releases a pain to find.

They hear a release is good and make it a pain to pick up. I think it started with Divine and got worse with Jester King.

Soon anything thats limited release will only be had by people who pray on DT Specs and trading it out of state or hoarding it.

    Also, here is some perspective:

Goose Island started in the late 80's. Their first batch of Bourbon County was made in 93 or 94. So basically it took them 20 years to build the following and the distribution they have now for these releases. Lets take say, Karback. They made a Bourbon barrel aged porter in the first year they opened, and it is not bottled yet. You can't really compare those. Jester King hypes the bejesus out of everything, and how old are they? 3 years or so. Southern Star stared in 08, and is just getting round to releasing BB Buried Hatched in cans. I really don't care about whales, but holly cow, outside of Saint Arnold and Real Ale the Texas beer seen is still in its infancy.

It really isn't that hard to land stuff in Texas. People just need realistic expectations. If you have solid trade partners and tasting partners you will eventually try everything you want. Just need patience, which most people on this site lack.

That is true. I stopped trading a few years ago, but never found it difficult to land something of interest. Then again, I never went "whale hunting," what ever people mean by that. (I wounder how many people have actually read Moby Dick, I digress:grinning:)

This thread is terrible. Why does every thread with the word "whale" in it have to turn into a circlejerk?
