Why does Houston get zero mind blowing Imperial Stouts?

Nah, BA B.O.R.I.S. tastes just fine... :grinning:

I honestly prefer the regular BORIS to the BA version

I'll have to grab a bottle when I'm in MI next month.

I have a BA and 100th Batch at home right now. Maybe a side by side later for fun.

All I know is the BA is awesome.

I'd love to find a DORIS too. And if fate shines on me, a BORIS Royale and Naked Evil. :grinning:

    Best. Utah beer. Period.

I would take a lot of Uinta or Epic beers over just about any Squatters beer.

    Have you had Outer Darkness?

Yes, I have. Very underwhelming to me. Ever tried Uinta Labyrinth or Epic Imperial Stout or Epic Big Bad Baptist?

    Nope.

Send some and I'll try it. We can't get that in Texas. :slight_frown:

Your comment sounded more like you were comparing breweries instead of the actual beers.

    Beermail me and we'll discuss.

Gotcha. I only meant that there were a lot of better beers in Utah than just about any Squatters beer (including Outer Darkness).

The real question is, did you ever have Outer Darkness when it was made by the original brewer? Different beer completely. Better than Labyrinth and Big Bad Baptist. I'll give you that the current Outer Darkness and Big Bad Baptist are probably close for me.

I wish I had if you think it was better than the current version.

Hmmm...perhaps not. It's been at least 2-3 years since I've had it. Was the packaging different? When I google it, there are 2 different labels - one all black, and the other with yellow trim. I had it with yellow trim.

My quick take on this subject, is that no matter what our Texas distribution was, you would probably be dissatisfied with the result. At the end of the day, we'd all love to have Founders KBS, Bells Expedition, Alesmith Speedway Stout, Dieu du Ciel Peche Mortel and Goose Island Bourbon County Stout. The truth of the matter is though, these beers are already at capacity in their markets, and they're unable to satisfy current demand in those markets. What about these, which ARE available here:

    Stone Imperial Russian Stout
    Oak Aged Yeti
    Chocolate Yeti
    Espresso Yeti
    The Abyss
    Old Rasputin
    Ten Fidy
Old Rasputin Bourbon Barrel Anniversary Stout
    Yeti
    Victory Storm King
    Avery Uncle Jacob's

You're probably wondering why I listed off 11 beers that everyone has already mentioned. To put it succinctly, these are 11 of the top 100 Imperial Stouts (as measured by at least one website) available in the entire world, and all of them are available right here in your own backyard.

It would probably be remiss of me not to mention Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout as well, as one of the very best out there. For the price, you simply can't beat it anywhere. Do what others have suggested and buy a case or two this winter when it comes out, then you've got some for the whole year. At $8/4-pack, I don't think anyone will disagree that it's the best value in an imperial stout anywhere.

Beer is a journey, not a destination. Enjoy it. If everything was available right here year round, then those special moments when you come across your first Bell's Expedition Stout or KBS won't be nearly as special. Enjoy what you have, not worrying about what you don't. It will make seeking out those special experiences even better.

    Cheers,
    Chad

Yup, you've had the beer as brewed by their new brewer. Nothing wrong with it, but it's just not nearly as good as their original brewer. The original brewer created the recipe and has since left Squatters. The new labels have the yellow ring, the old ones were all black with red eyes only.

That explains it. Even the packaging looks better for the older one :stuck_out_tongue:

I've never seen or heard of BA Old Rasputin being available in Houston. I've had it on several occasions, but didn't think it came to TX. Is it DFW only?

It came to Houston. Probably 10 cases or so. Obviously flew off the shelf pretty quick. It came here a few months after it had been widely available everywhere else.

We definitely got some in Dallas/Fort Worth area. Unsure if Houston specifically got this or not. Normally anything from North Coast would be available state wide if it was in one market. I know that's not always the case, but generally true.
