So I've decided I need to get some neat glasses to drink my beer in. Right now all I have is a Samuel Smith glass that came in a gift pack and a collection of generic tumblers, all dark blue, which I dont like drinking beer out of. I prefer a clear glass.

Where do you usually find your glasses? Whats a decent price to pay? I've found a few at some random stores and such but I've always passed thinking I didn't want to pay too much or that I could score some at a garage sale or thrift store. I'm starting to find that those places are nice for generic glasses but it seems branded ones are a bit harder to come by.

The most obvious source is the breweries themselves. Glassware can obviously be obtained by in-person visits or you can use their web stores although you'll end up having to pay shipping. There are other internet sites, but shipping charges apply there as well. Some of my other sources:

    1. Other stores in Chicago that I've located that sell specialty branded glassware. There are several, both independent shops and chain liquor stores. In my experience the selection at independent shops far exceeds anything you'll find at a chain store. You'll have to look around, but living in a major city does have it's advantages here.

    2. Bars that speciallize in craft beer. Develop relationships with the staff at bars you frequent most often then don't be afraid to ask about any glassware they have but offer to pay for them. Many times they get branded glassware from their distributor for free or at very little cost. For instance, a bar near me that I frequent quite often had a Brooklyn Brewery night and they received a bunch of Brooklyn snifters. Once the event was over, one of the managers there put aside four of them for me. I offered to pay for them, but he just gave them to me.

    3. Gift packs. The drawback is that you usually only get one glass and you don't get much choice regarding which brews are included. I like having at least two of each piece of specialty glassware (not including pints glasses) I have...nice when sharing a bomber or 750ml with a friend. Most specialty glassware is suited for "specialty brews" that generally aren't year-round and are more suited for a glass such a snifter. With some exceptions, these brews are usually sold in bombers or 750's, so having a matched pair is perfect if you're splitting it. Some breweries, such as Jolly Pumpkin sell all their brews in 750's, so I actually have two pairs of their small tulips.

EDIT: As far as a decent price to pay, it depends on the glass. Most of the glasses, that weren't given to me, have ranged in price from $5-$10. I have quite a bit of glassware...

    Nice glasses!

Cool thanks. I really never though about the bar thing. I may try that. Yeah there are a few independent shops around here that has a decent to good selections of glass. Also there is a supermarket or 2 that do a lot in craft beers that have some too. Prices seem to be around that too. Sometimes as low as 2.99 which I though was decent.

I swear a saw a Cantillon, or something else cool like that, glass at one of the places and almost grabbed it. Cant remember which though

Where to start? I'd say start with goodwill, antique shops, and fleamarkets. You'd be surprised at how cheap you can get cool glasses, especially brandy snifters, which are great for big, full-bodied beers.

Beyond that, I usually try to pick glasses up at breweries and sometimes bars -- you'll be surprised how many bars are willing to sell their glasses to you.

As far as how much to pay, mine have ranged from almost nothing to probably too much. Like chanokokoro, I have a lot of glasses.

    My collection...

still need to add a few newer glasses to this, but waiting for my new phone to snap some shots.

pretty much always up for a glass swap too if you have anything cool/non-pint (especially mini snifters and mini tasters) that i don't have.

I have a handful of glasses that I do my drinking from, CBS snifter, Ommegang tulip, SA sensory pint and some smaller snifters. Collecting wise I have always stuck to pints, the majority from US breweries...not sure why, I guess Im a sucker for the color logos. Most I have gotten directly from the breweries or purchased on eBay..

I wouldn't say my girlfriend has a small hand but I will say that the CR glass doesn't fit on any of the shelves in my cabinets.

    ...so yes, it's THAT big
