If you are going to Argentina, I'd recommend Antares. They are a chain and have locations in Buenos Aires and in most of the big cities. I went to the one in Mar Del Plata and the beer was decent, particularly their imperial stout. Food is good too.

It's too bad you don't plan to visit Brazil, because there is quite a bit of activity with their beer scene.

If you're hitting Torres del Paine in Chile, Puerto Natales has a brewery / restaurant that's pretty good:

When I was in SA two years ago I found good beer pretty tough to come by, so this place was awesome to get something more along the lines of craft brew. The owner was a California guy, iirc. The dudes there at erratic rock are also super cool.

Damn, now I want to go back...

Thanks so much for the tips will try to check them all out. We've had a slight change of plans and decided to fly back from Brazil so if you have any tips for in Rio that would be much received as well!

In the outskirts of Buenos Aires there'sa Brewpub called Cork and they have 5 IPAs , Belgians and Barley wine. Probably the best spot in BA.

I guess I am too late for the topic, but In Rio (south zone), I`d recommend bars as Boteco Colarinho, Beer Jack and Delirium Cafe. Try out Bamberg (mostly german-style lagers), Wäls, Colorado (Vixnu, Indica, Demoiselle) and Bierland. With luck, you might even find something from Confraria do Marques or 2Cabeças.

If you are going to Peru you should try Sierra Andina Brewery in Huaraz and Barbarian in Lima, Peru.

Also coming soon to Lima, Peru is "Barranco Beer Company" in Barranco Lima will be opening June 2013.

can you explain some more about this. I am going to Brazil (Campinas, Sao Paulo) in June and was wondering what are some beers I should look for in stores or at bars. I am probably not going to have much say in which places we visit (visiting friends of my wife), but I would like to know of some things to keep an eye open for. If there are any good breweries or bars to visit that would be good to know in case I am able to persuade some people to go there.

p.s. if anyone has any advice it would be much appreciated.

Check this out for some beers to try.

Specifically for Campinas try this bar. It is the most famous beer bar in the city. The owners even have a beer rating site and forum, kind of Brazil's BA, so there's probably something good there (I've never been there personally). If you have some time to spend in São Paulo the city has several beer bars. Try EAP(best option), Cervejoteca, Frangó or The Ale House for bars and Cervejaria Nacional if you want a brew pub (the brewery doesn't bottle so their beers are rather exclusive).

At the EAP, you have the best chance of finding what you want. Some beers to look for would be:
    Season's Green Cow IPA
    Season's Bigfoot Russian Imperial Stout
    Invicta DIPA
    Invicta Black IPA
    Colorado Quattro
    Bodebrown Perigosa Imperial IPA
    Bodebrown/Stone brewing Co Cacau IPA
    Wals Quadrupel
    Wals Petroleum
    Wals Tripel
    Way hazelnut porter
    etc...
Just be prepared to shell out some dough to drink these kinds of beers. Craft beer in Brazil is really expensive compared to the US. As for the local supermarkets, with the exception of Zaffari, dont expect to find anything to exotic besides the main line up from Baden Baden and Eisenbahn. If you are staying near a Zaffari, you should check them out. If not, check out the closest Pao de Acucar supermarket or better yet an emporio. If you have any questions send me a BM.

Oddly, Colorado Brewery (Brazil) had some beers in a grocery store here in Texas over the last month. The Imperial Stout and Imperial IPA were both quality beers.

I could not find either of those in Brazil when I was looking for them.

That's the thing, it is very hard to find those 3 "special" Colorado beers here in Brazil, anywhere. And when you do find one of them it is more expensive here than it is in the US. Terrible.

How much did you pay for the bottles and what size was the IPA, I'm just curious about how much cheaper it was than here. For example their RIS is about $25 here and the 600ml of the DIPA is about $12. Here in Sao Paulo's west zone you can find both at several places like EAP, Beer4U, Almada, etc....

I know it was a limited time release thing here, and they went for 8.99 a bottle. I thought it was steep for a Brazilian beer, but hell, it is craft, and I got them anyways. I was pleasantly surprised.

They were all $8.99 for 3 different styles (Vixnu, Guanabara (may be called Ithaca elsewhere?) and Beurtho).
