During the fermentation of the first batch of this
Abbey-style dubbel, the yeast «died» and was
«resurrected» by brewer Chris Cashell. Made with five types of barley malt and lots of sugar, this beer is quite strong and flavorful, without being too sweet. 7%abv

Picked up a single of this beer at my local establishment, Civera's in Drexel Hill. Lets see how it matches up. Poured from a 12 ounce can into a snifter glass.
Appearance: pours a nice, caramel brown with a slight amber hue. Leaves behind a nice fluffy head, about an inch high that takes its time to dissipate. Also leaves a behind some impressive lacing. Nicely done.
Smell: Dubbels traditionally have a nice caramel aroma and this is no different. Upon first inspection, a full aroma of malts and caramel fill the air. Upon my second whiff, hints of dark fruits come to mind, prunes, grapes, raisins. Not very impressed, I was looking for more of a dark malt flavor. It's lacking in that department.
Taste: first sips, I discovered a hint of the crystal sugars, but not too overwhelming, which is a nice touch and keeps it balanced. The Belgian style yeast is not bad either. There's a hint of that in it. Light spices can be detected, but nothing that really stands out to make this beer it's own. A little surprised/disappointed in that. Upon completion of this beer, I noticed the balance isn't too noticeable and could use some work.
Mouthfeel: medium carbonation, above average carbonation with a nice cream-style body. Quite nice.
Overall: I guess I had high expect ions coming into this beer. It was good, don't get me wrong, but for this style, I guess I was expecting something out of this world when it comes to my beer palate. It did have a smooth, creamy body that went down nice and hid the alcohol well. I would try again, only if it were on tap since I would love to have another experience from a different side. I would recommend to a friend who isn't familiar with the genre but looking to expand. I would recommend at least a bottle. Cheers!

Poured from can into a chalice glass
Appearance – Pours a beautiful chestnut colored brew with a decent ruby red hue mixed within. Upon pouring there is a one finger light tan colored head that has a fantastic level of retention. Over time the head slowly fades leaving a nice level of lace on the sides of the glass.
Smell- The aroma is light overall. Some light toasted malts as well as some darker fruits are the heaviest of the detectable aromas. The darker aromas are mainly of a cherry and raisin smell. These aromas are all mixed with a slightly yeasty and lightly spiced aroma of coriander and clove as well as a bit of a boozy wine like smell.
Taste- The taste begins on the drier side with a lightly roasted malt and bready flavor. Some lighter dark fruit flavors of cherry and plum are present upfront. As the flavors advance a caramel flavor comes and goes from the tongue never really having the chance to take the brew out of its dry tasting state. Some earthy and grassy hop flavors as well as a somewhat more potent alcohol flavor come to the taste more toward the middle to the end, breaking some of the smooth dryness that was present upfront. Other lighter flavor so of a yeasty and spicy flavor join the taste at its end, with the combination of all the flavors leaving a dry, crisp, and boozy flavor to linger on the tongue.
Mouthfeel-The body of the beer is crisp and lighter for a 7 % dubbel with a carbonation level that is average to a tad above average. The slightly thinner body and slightly higher carbonation are great for complementing this crisp, dry and boozy tasting brew all while still allowing the lighter fruit flavors to shine through.
Overall- A pretty nice dry and warming dubbel, which all the while still maintains a nice fruit flavor profile. Although it is a bit on the boozy and biting side at the end of the taste, it is still rather enjoyable to drink. Worth a try if you have the opportunity.

Can on the Christian feast of the Resurrection: Easter. Fitting.
Gotta represent the local brew from Baltimore, and a decent one at that. Pours a lovely deep red at the top, a little lighter at the bottom. Head is thick and pillowy. Nose is full, with semi-sweet malts. Taste is complex and lovely. Sweets hit first, then develops into bitter malts and hops. It's somewhat of a poor man's dubbel, lacking some character of flavor. At least the artwork on the can is sweet, with the drop of messianic blood dripping into the chalice of salvation.
All in all, a Maryland brew to be proud of.

A – Dark icetea amber body. Bone-white head is creamy, with great retention and solid lace.
S – On the sweeter side with caramel and malt. Kiss of grassy hops, and a light booze as it warms.
T – Stellar balance. The profile opens with smooth malt coupled with a great, green, herbal hop bitterness. The hops stand out with fantastic flavor definition, but manage to avoid overpowering the rest of the profile and pulling the beer into IPA territory. The center is loaded with fruit: orange and plums. Caramel and a rolling herbal bitterness balance a net-dry finish.
M – Super smooth, medium/full body.
O – Classifying this beer as a Double doesn't do it justice. It's unquestionably off-style for a double, but it's unquestionably delicious. I'd be much happier calling it an "American Double"; a lighter, hoppier version of it's Belgian cousin - and to that end I'd argue that it was brewed perfectly to-style lol. No matter how you label it though, it's a fantastic brew. This one took me totally by surprise and I was quite happily blown away.

12oz can into an Orval chalice.
Ugly can label. Pours a peach-brown color. Mucky enough to not pass much light. The head looks sloshy and weak. Islands of bubbles pattern amongst foamy scum on the surface.
Dark fruits and phenols. Yeast esters push cherry, date, and raisin through the malts. Notes of dark caramel and stale bread are also prominent. Not bad, but nothing to write home about.
Drier than I'd expect for a dubbel. Crystal malts are steely, with a dry toffee note. Alcohol is kind of big for the percentage. Brashly spicy and potent, too. Notes of raisin, date, and dark bread are all quite dried out. If my eyes were closed, I'd never guess this beer to be this dark. Almost tastes like a strong pale with darker fruit flavors. Earthy dead leaf flavor is probably a byproduct of a powdery yeast. A fresher hop character than I'm used to in this style. Medicinal almost turns minty in the finish.
Drinks just light of medium, in body. Carbonation is almost sizzling, however. A mouthfeel that I'm not particularly used to for a Belgian-style ale. Again, the strength is a bit too pronounced.
It's just an okay beer, really. Doesn't taste contrived. After letting it warm up and become fully-realized, I can admit that it's right in the ballpark, after all. A uniquely dry dubbel, and out of a can, no less.

Had this on 2012-12-27 in Columbia, PA
A - Pretty clear, dark tawny-amber with a 3/4-finger head that fades away very quickly with light lace.
S - Sweet caramel, brown bread, light yeast. Not very aromatic.
T - Gingerbread, caramel, medium roasted malt, herbal, light citrus. Dries nicely and finishes with balancing roast and hop bitterness; even leaning towards pale ale territory. Not overly complex but it tastes good.
M - Medium body and high carbonation. Both smooth and crisp. Nice.
O - This one surprised me. I was expecting a more traditional Dubbel but got a style-bending brew, merging a brown ale, dubbel and a pale ale. I'd be glad to have this again.
A – Dark icetea amber body. Bone-white head is creamy, with great retention and solid lace.
S – On the sweeter side with caramel and malt. Kiss of grassy hops, and a light booze as it warms.
Notes: Recommended to me by the Mid-Atlantic Brewery News Baltimore correspondent, Alexander Mitchell, while we were waiting in line on 2012-12-12 for the special release of Westvletereen XII.

Really cool to see a Belgian beer in a can, judgment still out on how this will hold up with Belgian beer fans. Appearance had a cherry red raisin color with a slight blood orange hue. clarity was minimal. a big off white head that dissipated somewhat quickly in the glass. The aroma was full of dark candi sugar sweetness. some toffee notes, some dark fruit notes (def. cherry) with a slight citrus and caramel aroma as well. The flavor is not exactly the same though, Some raisin notes perk up in the front. the middle seems to present the moderately strong dark sugar character that is similar in the nose. the mouthfeel i feel is a bit in the middle for a Belgian style ale. it could either finish quicker or hang out but transits while it hangs around. I believe this to be a sessionable style Belgian beer with a higher than average ABV. its aroma really did it for me and the interesting coffee acridness which i am probably confusing for a higher than average hoppyness combined with the malt character is actually very enjoyable.

Pours a dark walnut body beneath the bubbly tan head that quickly dissolves to leave only traces of lacing.
Aromas of sweet fruit such as plum and cherry rise from the glass accompanied by molasses and yeast but not as strong as you would expect.
Flavors also offer sweet fruit, molasses, yeast and hints of brown sugar.
Medium in body and carbonation with a drying finish.
Not bad with many traditional Dubbel characteristics just not as pronounced as some of its style counterparts.

A - Beautiful, rich, caramel color with a very dense, creamy beige head.
S - Alcohol bite on the nose followed by dried pit fruits, yeast, and even a sweet white wine smell.
T - Jarringly bitter. Grapefruit rind with a yeasty and metallic undertone with faint banana and tropical fruits.
M - Medium body, medium carbonation. Astringent finish.
D - Everything but the taste of this dubbel is a winner, it is just too bitter.

A - Pours with a two finger head of white foam on top of a hazy, amber body. The head settles at a moderate pace and leaves decent lace.
S - Some toffee, spicy Belgian yeast, and a touch of red apple.
T - Spicy yeast up front with a bit of red apple. Some toffee in the middle and more muted spice, perhaps a touch of coriander. Finishes with more of the same toasted malt and light spice.
M - Medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.
D - A bit bland for a dubbel. The yeast character is mild and the malt is not quite as dark as I would expect it to be for the style. Just not much going on here.

Pours a deep dark orange with a prodigious beige head that settles down slowly. Creamy, clingy lacing. Very sweet and malty aroma; fruity yeast notes, bread, subtle citrus hops, brown sugar and molasses.
The flavor is much the same, although the sweet caramel-toffee dries up pretty well in the finish. Nice chewy malt character; a hint of booze; dark fruits, yeasty spice, and some vaguely citrusy hops just poking out and asserting a light bitterness. Unfortunately the carbonation is a little excessive and prickly and detracts from the overall enjoyment of the beer. Its hard to revel in the strong and sweet malt character without much accompanying smoothness or creaminess. The body is just a shade lighter than medium for the style which also didn't help; it could have used just a little more heft.
However not a bad brew at all; I wish the feel had been a little smoother, because the aroma and taste are both quite nice.

A Can
Ressurection comes to me looking pretty standard doubleish with a dark brown bordering on red kinda like a maroon color with a cream tan shaded head that sat on top leaving minor ticks on the glass. Nice looking up towards the light. Smell is real bready, a deep dark bread, not overly yeasty like most. Smells of caramel, and plums with raisin plus others. A very good dubble here, better than most american versions I've had recently. Dark fruits plus plums with dark bread. Some faint cherry notes and a touch of chocolate. Some banana and hefeweizen tastes. Feel is a step down from medium and is a tad thin, but that makes this even more drinkable. I finished a 12oz and contemplated getting more, for a style that's not my priority. Get a hold of this stuff.

12oz can poured into a Chalice
Appearance - Pours a murky orange-brown with a dense ivory head that settles to a thin haze and sudsy ring, leaving spotty lacing clinging to the glass.
Smell - Aromas of roasted banana and prunes dominate, with a hefty dose of Belgian yeast and some sweet brown sugar.
Taste - Mild flavors of banana and caramel malt with just a touch of earthy Belgian yeast. A bit of a letdown from the nose, actually, this isn't nearly as flavorful as I'd expected. Still, surprisingly quaffable considering the relatively high ABV.
Mouthfeel - A bit over medium-bodied, with a slightly sticky mouthfeel and decent carbonation.
Overall - A decent enough Dubbel, but perhaps the real magic is putting a Belgian-style ale in a can (something I'd love to see more of)!

A - Clear amber color with a nicely retained 2 finger white head. Active bubbles dance beneath the surface.
S - Sweet caramel, dark fruit, yeast.
T - Like its nose, sweet caramel and dark fruit dominate. In the background there is spice, toffee, yeast and a bit of hop at the end for a crisp clean finish.
M - Medium bodied, smooth. Nice, level of carbonation. Slight alcohol warmth.
O - This is a very nice American Double. It is on of the better beers brewed in Baltimore. Very drinkable and one needs to be careful of it well masked 7% ABV it will sneak up on you. Enjoy!!!

a - popped the can and filled my ommegang chalice. poured a nice transparent crimson witha thin bubbly greyish white head. not as creamy as i look for typically in the style, but it came from a can!!! head was gone instantly.
s - dark fruit, nutmeg, caramel. aluminum. smells like an american dubble...from a can.
t - nutmeg. caramel. dark fruit. pretty earthy, but i get the aluminum also.
m - medium to full bodied, but not creamy. finishes biscuity. a bit dry.
o - overall, who woulda thunk it...a dubble...from a can! i love canned beer, but this is a style that it seems the canning hurts it. would love to try this from tap or perhaps a bottle, to see if the canning of a dubble just doesn't work, as i suspect.

A - While pouring, a massive head formed then the cascading magic began...it was almost like a nitro pour was happening...after it settled a creamy, white head sat three fingers above a clear, amber body...very nice retention with sticky lacing left behind
S - A sweet nose composed of caramel, dark fruits, and some Belgian yeast
T - The caramel adds a lot of sweetness, but the beer never becomes overly sweet...there's a softer toffee sweetness that lingers in the background...the yeast and dark fruits comes out in the middle...as the beer warms there is almost a slight spice level in the background...the finish is clean with a low hop bite
M - Medium bodied...I want to say this was smooth, but it came across rather flat...there was a little metallic twang lingering also
O - I loved the pour from this can but I can't say the same for the beer...a classic, middle-of-the-road Dubbel...I like seeing a Belgian style beer in a can though!

12oz. can courtesy of Soonami (thanks Mike). Served in my DT tulip at 53 degrees. Pours a hazy mahogany with a latte-like, 1.5 inch cream-colored head embedded with craters. Head eventually dissipates into a bull's eye dollop in the center and a frothy band around the edges. Spots and slashes of lacing are exposed during the tasting and exhibit excellent retention. Nose expresses dark vinous fruits, yeast and an earthy character. Taste consistent with nose; however, there is also a pleasant herbal quality and a light sweetness. Finish expresses a slight metallic tinge. Mouthfeel is medium-light in body with a pleasant, even carbonation and a touch of acidity. Overall, a very good American Dubbel. I definitely will need to try some more form this brewer. Well worth your time if you appreciate the style and have the opportunity to try it.

Big thanks to my buddy Ron for introducing me to this brew.
12oz can poured into a goblet.
I'd be much happier calling it an "American Double"; a lighter, hoppier version of it's Belgian cousin - and to that end I'd argue that it was brewed perfectly to-style lol. Love the cans! Pours into my glass a deep blood red bordering on black that bursts out when held to the light. Two fingers of creamy, bubbly khaki head atop the brew that leaves sticky lacing patches down the glass. Sweet malts with chocolate covered raisins and a spicy yeast undertone. Dark fruits mingle throughout as well.
First sip brings somewhat sweet malts upfront with a mix of cocoa, raisins, dark fruits and a touch of honey. Flows down with a kiss of spicy yeast. Clean finish, pretty tasty!
Mouthfeel is medium bodied with rather punchy carbonation that explodes as it flows down. I have to say, a Dubbel in a can is pretty awesome and this is an enjoyable brew. Glad I had the chance to sample it, thanks smokeypeat!

Got this beer in a trade as an extra. Thanks to my many trading partners.
Poured a nice dark amber with a very small off white head and gentle lacing
Very sweet to the smell with a touch of rasion.
Taste not very bad on the fromt but an odd musty after tast. Thought about pouring down drain but powered through
Mouthfeel was thin
Would not seek or even buy this beer.

A: Pours a dark amber with a cream colored head and plenty of lacing sticking around.
S: I might be getting a little aluminum here? There's some floral malts as well, a little hops.
T: Oohhh. Lots of caramel up front--I like that. Good hop bitterness on the back end. Picking up some spiciness as well. Good tasting brew.
M: Good mouthfeel as well. Good amount of carbonation. Very smooth, goes down easy.
O: I think I enjoy trading just because I get the opportunity to try beers like this. If I'm ever in the area, I'll be drinking several more of these. This is a damn good beer.

A: dark, with caramel complection. not visable through, but dark dark amber finish.
S: moderately sweet, but typical of an english abbey. not overly sweet an not too much fruit aroma as experienced with prior abbeys.
T: clean finish, great taste and finish. not heavy and lives up to the brewer's name "brewer's art". the complexity and fine flavor is truly an art.
M: incredibly smooth, easy to drink. not like anything over 7% apv that i've experienced. taste make it's easy to drink and have plenty.
O: hands down my favorite beer. reminds me of home, and tastes exceptional. made me a fan of english dubbels without being over bearing or specific.
