Heard Saranac had stepped up their game a bit, so I figured for the price...I'd give it a shot.
Poured intoa pint glass. Translucent dark brown with a very sparse head, even with a vigorous pour. Very little in the nose; very dry.
Style wise, overall a decent effort from Saranac. I'll give it another shot, but won't actively seek it out.

Served in a pint glass.
Appearance: Pours a very dark brown-black, with heavy bubbles rising to the surface of the body; creates a light tan head just about 1/4" in size.
Smell: Smells bitter, usually what expect from Irish stouts.
Taste: Feels bitter but still smooth, light bitter chocolate and hop feel.
Mouth: Unlike most "Irish stouts" this carbonation on the brew is a tad strong, borderline heavy...I have no complaints
Overall: Good beer to have, wouldn't replace my usual Irish stouts but definitely not a disappointment. Salud!

Another one from the 2013 spring mixed 12 pack from Saranac found at Evergreen Liquors in Frederick ($13.99).
Look: Fairly dark with some ruby red tinges coming through. Head was a thin light-tan coating with some random lacing. Not a bad looking brew.
Smell: Semi-sweet dark chocolate with some caramelized brown sugar and roasted coffee.
Taste: First off were notes of bitter roasted coffee beans. The some faint dark chocolate notes. The finish was very dry with a hint of coffee bitterness that lingered. Very thin body and mouth feel.
This was a basic Dry Stout. I was a little taken back by just how thin the body was. It seemed on the edge of almost being a Schwarzbier with some extra dryness.

bought as part of Saranac's Spring Variety pack from Beers of the World on 4/6/13 for $ 8.77.
poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, served at fridge temp.
appearance: looks black as coal, only emits a tiny sliver of ruby when under bright sunlight. thick, 3 finger mocha head. Nice lacing.
aroma: richly roasted malt, some chocolate with a whiff of earthy hops.
mouthfeel: decent, seems appropriate for the style.
taste: slightly charred, faintly smoky with a touch of caramel and a kiss of hops.
notes: fun, easy to drink, a winner for Matt Brewing, IMO.

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a dark brown-to-black coloring with light brown highlights around the edges and a thin, sparse, light tan coating on the surface. Aromas of mocha coffee, with a slight sugary ribbon to the chocolate character, and a touch of earthy characteristics. Flavors of roast and char initially, with a slick, bitter coffee backbone quickly following. Some bitter chocolate highlights, but not as much as the nose would lead you to believe. Aftertaste is rich chocolate and coffee, with a strong bitter undertone. Light, dry body with a slick, quick finish. True to the style, but a little more chocolatey and rich than you may be used to. Tasty.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a snifter.
A dark brown colored pour. Normal thickness. About one finger thick tan colored head that fades very quickly. Black inside the glass. Opaque. Decent lacing on the sides.
Aroma is of typical dry Irish stout type. A good amount of roasted malts. Dry feel. Dark roasted malts are prominent over all.
Taste is of very dark roasted malts. Dry hops that are very faint. No bitterness. Finish is dry.
Mouth feel is medium-light bodied with a lot of carbonation. No astringency. Drinks like an easy porter.

Awesome completely opaque black appearance with good head. Chocolate toasted caramel malts in the aroma. Great smell. Dark toasted caramel, coffee, chocolate flavor. Finishes a little bit better than it starts. Missing that milky caramel overtone and complexity to take it beyond what it is.
Bottom line: Good decent stout, but it doesn't take it to the next level.

Got in Saranac spring variety pack.
I'm a fan of most of Saranac's beers that I've had, none too disappointing, but not spectacular.
Poured this into a mug.
Immediate sweetish coffee scent balanced with malt.
About 1 finger head that stayed throughout drinking.
It's a very good stout. Irish characteristics. Like a very dark coffee, sweetened slightly and mildly fruity.
It's a solid beer that I could see drinking more of on an Irish drinking night.
The mouthfeel is a little weak. While there is some mild carbonation and the flavor is good, it's not quite as balanced as it could be.
A solid effort.
