A: The beer is very hazy reddish amber in color. It poured with a finger high off white head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: The smell has aromas of sourness and brettanomyces yeast
T: The taste is rather tart and has some sourness with notes of oak from the barrel aging and hints of sour cherries in the flavors. The sourness becomes stronger as the beer warms up.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation. The oak lends a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: This beer isn’t as sour as some of the other Jolly Pumpkin beers so it could make for a good introduction to the style.
Note: Blend #7

22 oz. bottle. Pours a somewhat murky, reddish-brown, with a big off-white head. Decent retention, patchy lacing. Aroma is a bit subtler than expected; some tart cherry, lemony citrus, light acidity detected, oak, and an undercurrent of musty funk and hay.
Taste follows the nose and comes at you gradually; it’s not aggressively sour, but your teeth are squeaking a little by the time the glass is done. Moderately lactic and acidic, again with tart cherries and lemons; other tropical fruit notes stay in the periphery but they’re there. As the beer warms and opens up a bit the wood and bretty funkiness really starts to emerge. In the end I just wanted more though: more sour, more funk, bigger flavors. Instead it’s dry and elegant and restrained.
Medium-light body, crisp and refreshing carbonation; clean, dry finish. This was quite an enjoyable sour, but not exceptional enough to return to at its price point I’m afraid.

Bottle pour at the 2012 Peter Reeves Memorial Sourfest at Churchill’s Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.
Pours a clear dark orange with a foamy tan head that fades to nothing. No lacing on the drink down. Smell is slightly sour and tart with some malt, fruit, and woody aromas. Taste is much the same with a woody finish. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is pretty tasty and much better than the Maui version but still not all that impressive in my opinion.

Cheers to Goblinmunkey7 for sharing this beer
Consumed 9/16/12
Appearance: Medium amber with some orange highlights - hazy, with a frothy off-white head, retains a little ring, leaves some spots of lacing
Smell: Tropical and exotic - honestly reminds me of a girly, tropical shampoo - some funk, some tartness and sourness, but the main thing here is fruit - some wood - pale and amber malts in the background
Taste: A bit more mild than the tropical shampoo aroma, but still interesting - fleshy, tropical fruit - some acidic funkiness, tart, lightly sour - lightly bitter - a light woodiness - light pale and amber malts - something that reminds me of Chap Stick - flavorful but also a little interesting
Mouthfeel: Medium, smooth, nicely carbonated, but again, a too watery
Overall: Interesting, but not amazing
The fruit aroma and fruit flavors are really interesting. But nothing else is particularly exceptional. This is very mildly tart and sour. Worth a try, at least.

Appearance: Dark copper/burnt orange. Head is slightly off-white. Drops to a tiny cap and slightly bubbly collar. No lacing. Minor carbonation.
Smell: Yeasty funk. Pepper and macerated cherry flesh. Some cherry pit and skin as well. Floral with a nIce underlying lactic tartness from the Jolly Pumpkin barrels. Earthy, herbal, and damp. Dry crackery yeast. Warming pulls out some brighter cherry juice. Vaguely tropical.
Taste: Tropical fruit, almost mealy. Vaguely soapy. Peppery with some acetic and lactic bite in the back. Some sweeter malts come across a touch bready and dry. Oak barrel becomes more dominant as the beer warms. Some cherry flesh with bigger pushes of pit and skin. Tart cherry juice. Reminds me of washing my hair. Soapy. Some well-used leather.
Mouthfeel: Medium to light body with almost no carbonation. Minimal dryness. Some lingering spiciness.
Overall: Good, but not the best showing from Jolly Pumpkin.
Reminds me of tropical shampoo. Some. Ice layers of yeast and fruit and barrel. Solid, but lacks some of the greater barrel complexity I expect from Jolly Pumpkin. Definitely hits that ale with cherries thrown in a barrel. Wasn't really designed to go there.

Bottle poured into a tulip glass. Beer pours a reddish brown, mostly opaque, with a half a finger of loose off white foamy head that quickly dissipates with some light lacing.
Nose is mostly fresh cherry, and a tangy generic tropical fruit smell. Fairly light aroma.
Taste follows the nose, cherry, generic tropical fruit, lightly tangy and tart. Sweeter wheat malts mid tongue. Finishes clean, with some light lingering cherry.
Light body, with some initial sharp prick of carbonation that quickly fades. Light and refreshing beer, easy to drink, but not all that interesting.

1503rd Review on BA
Bottle to JP/Maui Collab Glass
750ml Cap
Batch 1- 4/12 Bottling.
Thanks to Egadbananas for this one
App- A little bit of a hiss when the cap popped on this one. The beer pours out with a few colors in the glass. It was a light red/orange/yellow color with a good density behind it. Really couldn't see through the center. A good 1-1/2 to 2 finger light tan head was there and fell pretty quick. A little bit of cling but not much.
Smell- The nose on the one was really nice. The opening aromas of the blended cherries from both sides created a nice duality of competiting dryness and earthy bitter and funk at the same time. The oak created a nice aroma with the yeasts casting a great net to hold it all together.
Taste- Its a nice sour. Originally brewed as a red ale with cherries, I was glad the flavors on this one were a bit better than the Maui version. The cherries are dry and tart and the barrel aging creates a good wood earthy bite. The yeasts are a bit funky and complex without over doing it.
Mouth- A little bit of a lighter body with a pretty high carbonation on this one. Residual cherry and funky yeast flavors remain on this one.
Drink- A good sour, not a great sour. Not sure what I was expecting going in, but wasnt disappointed though. Well layered and tasty. I did like this one a lot better than the canned Maui version.

A - Pours a dark/dank amber with a one finger off white head. Not much lacking.
S - A sweet tartness on the nose with tropical fruits. Very interesting.
T - Not a true sour by taste, it's definitely a watered down version. The tartness comes off as raspberries or strawberries.
M - Light body with good carbonation.
O - Much improved from the Maui version! I should give it 5 stars alone just for that. Just enough tartness to let you know it's there. Very palettable.

Big thanks goes out to funkydelic for sharing this one during our Labor Day tasting! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a deep red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, tart cherry, sour, earth, and grain. The flavor was of sweet malt, tart cherry, grain, sour, and earth. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. We tasted this one side-by-side with the Maui version and HOLY SHIT! These things are night and day different from each other. Lots more complexity going on in this one with a nice tart and sour note that was very intriguing. Not sure what Jolly Pumpkin did differently on this one, but whatever it was it TOTALLY worked. Well worth seeking out if you have not had it.

Handsome dark amber in the 0.25 litre snifter. Just a hint of Hawaiian punch in the nost. A woodsy flavor as well. Quite tasty and makes for an intriguing sipping beer. Fruit is interesting without overdoing it, though I wouldn't mind tasting the cherries a little. Slight sweetness cut with a touch of the old barrel. Or maybe it's just the passion fruit seeds.
Tart and spritzy. Fruity and flavorful. Roasty malt taste and lots of bitterness. Tastes like a mix of bitter Belgian yeast, a good dose of hops, and citrus peel. rich, yet sharp, and has a pleasant beery, bitter aftertaste.
On these collaboration beers, how would you know who made what if it's on tap? But this is so much better than the Maui canned version I will call it JP and sue me if I play it wrong. On tap at Blind Lady in San Diego.

First had: on tap at Monk's, Philly, PA
Collaboration with Maui Brewing.
Served in a tulip glass, a hazy liquid of reddish-amber hue, with a thin white head that receded to a ringlet, leaving spots of lacing on the glass. Aroma of cherries, melons, red wine, mildly acetic. Sour taste, but quite manageable and not at all puckering, tart with a good even mix of cherries and passionfruit, herbal, lightly acetic, with a touch of potpourri and bready yeast. The milder sourness and soft carbonation make for a very drinkable beer that goes down smooth and easy. Very nice overall.

We opened this along side the maui version at the Baltimore BA get together. Poured from the bottle into a tasting snifter.
Appearance: Pours a cloudy amber color with a red hue. There is a layer of white head that fades to a ring around the pour.
Smell: Sweet and rather herbal. There is a tartness along with some tropical fruit notes. Definitely picking up the traditional Jolly Pumpkin yeast.
Taste: Tart and a bit fruity. There is a mild note that reminds me of herbal tea. The finish is rather tart with some of the fruit notes. The sourness is similar to other JP offerings.
Mouthfeel; Medium body with tingly carbonation and a finish that is a bit dry.
Overall: This is much better than the Maui offering. I wouldn't have known the two were related if you didn't tell me. I would have this one again.

Thanks Brian. Batch 4, bottled 5/8/12.
A: Pours a murky iced tea color with reddish highlights. Almost no head is present, no lace.
S: Lightly tart smelling with notes of dry oak, light must, and tons of fruit, sweet berries, cherry skins, blackberries and passion fruit. Vinous smelling as well.
T: Not as well rounded as the nose. The oak is buttery, a bit greasy, and there is a good cherry skin fruit sourness in the finish. Good fruit but not as fruity as the nose. Oak could be drier.
M: Carbonation is rather low, medium-full body, greasy mouthfeel. Wish it was a little drier.
O: Great smell, everything else about the beer is average.

(Served in a chalice)
Batch 5 bottles 5/9/12
A- This beer pours a slightly hazy deep orange body with a sea of slow tiny bubbles. There is a thick sticky film of off-white that last a good bit. The second pour turns a bit more hazy.
S- Even during the pour, the full Jolly Pumpkin house yeast character comes through. There is a rich aroma with brett characters coming though as earthy and green grapefruit.
T- The nice flavor of passion fruit has a softer dark cherry note of support followed by some nice wet barrel flavors and a soft Brett flavor in the finish. Some tartness develops in the finish and a fruity and Brett flavor hangs on the tongue after each sip. The white cheese rind flavor comes through nicely aswell.
M- The medium mouthfeel has a gentle fizz that compliments the finish and no alcohol heat or astringency noticed.
O- This beer has a great balance of fruit and wild yeast/Brett flavors. The touch of sweetness in the beginning enhances the fruit character while the wild ale finish is supported by the more dry tartness. This was a tasty beer.

Pours a reddish colour, hazy, with a slight pinkish head. Aroma was fruity and tart, with some muskiness and bread crusts. Taste followed the tart, fruitiness, bordering sour, but more musky with hints of sweetness. Lighter, crisp body.

Wanted to try this and see how it compares to the Maui version. Plus I always need to know how many bottles to buy. Into New Belgium globe.
A - A finger or so of very red head (still light). Body is cloudy and mostly orange with slight red. Great lacing.
S - Whoa. Tons of real grapefruit, like spot on. Lime and green berries.
T - Again with the crazy amount of grapefruit. Delicious. Well balanced sweet and sour, just wonderful. Nice berry flavors and lemon.
M - Nothing special but decent carbonation. Body is a little light, but still good.
O - This was a real surprise. Not expecting that strong fruit flavor and only slight sour. Can taste a lot of Hawaii in this (unlike the Maui version). Refreshing and a nice summer brew.

Appearance: Pours a somewhat hazy mahogany color; the tap cap fades away but leaves some rocky islands on the liquid as well as some spotty lace
Smell: Funky fruit, with the passion fruit prominent, along with tart cherries; quite acetic
Taste: Acetically tart from the outset, with passion fruit and, to a lesser extent, cherry; by mid-palate, the tartness and funk reduces its dominance, allowing the fruit and malty undertones to make their statement; the finish is more balanced and while the tartness lingers, the fruit flavors are more pronounced
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate to high carbonation; puckerish
Overall: While this beer has a lot of fruit, it brings an exotic fruit element with the passion fruit; very different and quite enjoyable

Split a 750 into my Russian River glass.
Pours murky red with a small brief lasting head.
Strong fruit aromas. Sour cherry and tropical fruits which I'm assuming is the liliko'i, a fruit I've never heard of. Some oak and just a mild bit of sourness. Very pleasant.
Start out with a lush tropical fruit flavor along with some sour cherries. Cherries and oak come out a bit more near the end of the palate and their presence also increasing a bit as it warms. The typical "Jolly Pumpkin funk" works very well with the tropical fruits. Finishes somewhat oaky with a unique tropical fruit juiciness. Sour, but not overly so.
Juicy mouthfeel drying a bit toward the end. Medium carbonation levels.
Fantastic! I'm not sure what a liliko'i is, but I'm pretty sure I want to eat a lot of them if the taste of this beer is any indication. A great summer patio beer with unique and delicious flavors. Looks like I'm going to be ISO a few more bottles.

Split a 750 ml poured into a duvel glass blend #6 5/10/12
A: a browny orange with a hint of red, half a finger of head that dissapates quickly to a film, a few light spots of lacing.
S: deffinatly fruity, sour cherry and a light tropical fruit smell which I assume must be the liliko'i fruit. A nice sourness as well.... Faint vinegar and oak... A very nice smelling beer. At first the aroma was a bit muted I felt, buch once the brew warmed it's aroma really came out.
T: oak and sour cherries up front, cherry skin, a very pleasant tartness, and a hint of red wine vinegar.... I feel like the tropical fruit really makes its presence felt on the finish here, I've never had the fruit before but it reminds me of berryish pineapple dragon fruit. I fell like it gives the beer a almost tropical fruit punch taste.
M: medium lush mouthfeel, with a bit of juiciness on the finish.... Finish is almost like sour lemon rinds/green apple skin and oak. A very nice medium creamy level of carbonation.
O: this is yummy, at first I felt as though it perhaps needed to be a touch more sour, but now as the beer has warmed and I've gotten most of the glass in me, I'm starting to feel more like it was spot on, for a cherry tropical fruit punch sour... Yum.

Shared out of a 22 oz. bottle in a tulip glass on 8-6-12
A: Pours a rich and clear coppery amber with about a half an in of white head that dissipates fairly quick with little lacing. As the rest of the bottle with sediment is poured it turns a cloudy amber rust color.
S: Immediately notice somewhat tart cherries and oak. Notes of coconut, toffee, and hay.
T: Similar to nose. Cherries- not as tart as I had hoped for, but still good- and more oak. Bits of coconut and crackers, a little acidic and some brett funk.
M: Not too much carbonation as it settles down. Medium bodied with a little puckering effect from the cherries, but not much.
O: Not the most complex Jolly Pumpkin beer and wanted a little more tartness from the cherries, but still had a good balance of fruit and dry oak funk. One I'll still definately try again in the future; maybe with a little aging.

S- there is not a very strong smell to this beer but you can definitely pick up on cherries.
T- the taste comes and goes very quickly. The cherries are very defined however there is little by way of the Hawaiian fruit that was used. I do wish that I had a bit more knowledge on the fruit and what it has addded to the beer.
M-there did not seem to be much by way of mouth feel in fact it was quite thin. There is however, somewhat of a sensation on the tip of the tongue.
O- I definitely recommend this beer for anyone who loves sours or even if you are a beginner. It is very good either way.

Apperance- Slightly cloudy with a reddish tint
Smell- This beer primarily has a nice fresh tart cherry sent to it and a slight liliko'i fruity sent.
Taste- This beer had a nice clean pronounced taste of tart cherry with a nice dry finish. Little to no bitterness more to the malty side. Cherry for me was the primary flavor with a slight after taste of the liliko'i fruit.
Mouth feel- light bodied and had a good level of carbonation made for a nice balanced mouth feel.
Overall- This fruit ale is not overly sweet or syrupy, has a nice balance of tart to sweet. Very smooth and easy to drink with a nice crispy dry finish. Not a very complex beer, in regards to not leaving you guessing as to what was put into it, but still very good.

Bottle opened on 8.8.12 next to the Maui version.
A - Pours a cloudy reddish-brown with a thin fizzy light tan head. Good retention.
S - Tart sour cherries, light malt sweetness.
T - Mild tart cherry, that's it.

I was pretty excited to see this arrive. Indiana only got six cases.
Sobrehumano pours a light bodied bright blood orange in color with a light and creamy one finger, off white head. The nose is light and approachable. It smells of tart cherry juice. I appreciate that the cherry is authentic. The flavors too are light and approachable. It's very cherry forward and features a nice evel of tartness. I'm glad it doesn't feature any of the sweet aspects of cherry juice, which can be a little much. It's nice but I can't get anything other than cherry juice. It just doesn't have the opportunity to be more complex. Most Jolly Pumpkins have a lot of their house yeast flavor but i just don't get that with this one. I like this beer. It's a lighter sour, it just doesn't grade particularly well.

S - This beer had a very light aroma, hinting at tart cherry.
T - The taste is rather one note, with the cherry leading the flavor. It has a rather quick, dry finish. I wished I was more familiar with the Hawaiian fruit highlighted in the description; cherry was definitely the star.
M - A light tingle sensation near the tip of the tongue that was very pleasant. A somewhat thin mouthfeel.
O - If you love sours, you'll find this to be very wanting, but if you are introducing a comrade to sours this is a great choice. Best sipped and savored.
