Appearance:
The beer itself pours a pale gold with white head. The beer is clear overall but a little hazy.

Smell:
The funk is strong with this one. I can get some hops but the funk and a little bit of pepper seem to dominate.

Taste:
Fuuuunnnkkkyyy!!! A nice sour taste with a bitter hop aftertaste. I can taste the pepper mixing with the funk and hops and covers the whole pallate but does not dominate it.

Mouthfeel:
Biting carbonation and light to medium bodied.

Overall:
Pretty good beer.

Big bottle poured into a tulip. $11. Oro is the go-to Jolly Pumpkin for reasons of availability, relative cost and overall excellence.

A: Glowing pale oro, and almost filtered looking. No murk. About a finger of head which leaves average lacing. Actively carbed.

S: Brett funk is apparent. Tart smells: kumquats, Smarties, underripe pears. Very inviting.

T: Not unlike the nose: tart but neither synthetic not fruity. Very nice. The funk is mellow, but apparent. I don't get any barrel-aged characteristics, however, for a beer touted as oak-aged.

M: A pleasantly light feel, though I've had bottles that were more carbonated. These can gush from overcarbonation, so perhaps in new batches (this one from Jan. 2013) this has been dialed back.

O: Oro de Calabaza is a cult classic and an ideal gateway into Brett beers, Gueuzes, and farmhouse stuff. This bottle wasn't as transcendent as the few I'd had a year or more ago, which maybe says more about my expectations than anything else. It's a beautiful beer; one of those rarities that's appropriate for almost any occasion.

EDIT: Looking back at the last few reviews, the comments are quite similar and the bottles seem to be from the January 2013 batch. Would love to read something from an aged bottle to get a grip on how ODC performs in the cellar.

Bottle (1/8/2013) to oversized Ommegang wine glass

A:It is light golden yellowish honey in color with a white head that leaves a thin lacing around the top of the glass. It is cloudier then in appears as it looks light but in reality it is almost completely opaque but that is to be expected given the barrel aging.

S: There is a grain like light malt smell that definitely has some of that farmhouse funk nature to it. I cannot detect any of the oak but there is some dry wine like notes in there. Also there are some hint of alcohol though it is not strong at all but mixes with the a peppery kick that doesn't smell strongly and can feel it in your nose.

T: Nice and light upfront it is a pretty refreshing taste it definitely has a dry sour taste with light slightly fruity white wine notes. It has a slight peppery kick that mixes with a few other spices I cannot place to give the beer a unique bite, which combines well with the initial sour kick. There is also a little bit of funk in there to mix everything together.

M: The mouthfeel is light and watery as it is pretty thin. There is definitely a bready feel as its like biting into a roll but with more of a sour kick. You can definitely feel the pepper in there as it ads to the kick, but there is also a juicy feel like watered down white wine.

O: This is a nice light easy drinking sour that is especially good in terms of drinkability given 8%abv. There is a good sour funk, though a light one, that mixes well with a pepper kick to have a solid overall taste and feel. It looks good and only the scent there isn't much to say about. I enjoyed this as I have all the Jolly Pumpkin sours I've tried and is definitely worth a try.

Bottled in January, 2013, so it's 4 months old. What's the deal with age v. freshness on this thing?

As a bier de garde, saison, golden, whatever, I was expecting a much more unwieldy head. Alas, it took an aggressive pour to get much of anything. That said, this is a pretty beer. Super clear and light gold.

It smells a little funky and winey, and, sure enough, it tastes as much. Like, really winey. A blind taste test and a good amount of convincing and I may have believed a trusted friend that this was champagne. The oak, the brett, the sparkles... This is one effervescent mother, so prepare for it.

Drink it if you're looking for bubbles and light funk.

Batch 1158 Bottled 2-14-13

A: pours a cloudy/hazy yellow with about a fingers worth of snow white head formation. moderate carbonation

S: funk right up front with a nice dose of orange peel and lemon zest citrus. the oak casks are evident and it has a slight pepper quality to it.

T: the pepper and spices really come out here and is the main player of the brew. the funky presence makes for an interesting compliment to the spices. secondary notes include mild citrus, subtle oak and slight touch of tartness and vinegar in the finish.

M: solid medium bodied. leaves a nice tartness on the palate along with a subtle oakiness and a touch of funk.

O: another solid brew by Jolly . the pepper, spices and barnyard funk here creates a nice uniqueness definitely worthy of a try.

750ml, bottled on 3/29/2011. A slow gusher yields a large, fluffy head atop the amber-yellow beer. Good head retention and lace formation. Funky and fruity aroma featuring tart, sour apple and lemon plus a floral hop character. Sniff a bit harder and notes of oak and sourdough bread come through.

Solid tartness on the palate, though it falls short of what I'd call sour. Quite dry from start to finish. Not as malt forward as the handful of other bieres de garde I've had to date, which is a disappointment. Some noticeable lactic acid. The funkiness adds complexity at the expense of overshadowing an oaky, malty base. The mouthfeel, however, is excellent-- vigorously carbonated with bubbles that have a delicate touch.

A bit too much contribution from the Brett and various flora here for my taste. Well worth checking out if you're looking for something tart and funk-forward.

Big thanks to BryanK for sharing!

750ml capped bottle poured into a tulip glass, batch 1075 bottled 8/29/2012.

Slight gusher, pours a pretty cloudy straw yellow to light golden color with a nice looking 1/2 inch or so of creamy white head. Good head retention and lacing.

Light Brett shows some lemongrass, hay, hints of spice and alcohol, maybe some sweet Belgian grain, as I warms a bit of white wine comes out.

Similar to the aroma, just more of it. Sweet grain meets some Belgiany characteristics, hay, lemongrass citrus, light Brett notes.

A sweet creamy medium bodied Belgian beer. A nice tartness, definatly sour. The tartness fades a bit as it warms and it becomes a touch more sweet.

All in all, another solid and fairly unique beer from JP. Spot on to the style, which to be honest is maybe not my favorite Belgian style. Light on the Brett, personally I would've liked a bit more but it works. A worthy beer.

Pours a bright but slightly murky golden color, nice frothy bunny white head.

Smells lactic and sour, good amount of funk, yeastiness, nice assortment of fruit--banana and apple and grape and pear, maybe peaches and even a touch of citrus. Smells complex and great.

Taste is dry and pretty sour up front, fades into a really yeasty fruit bouquet much like the nose, good amount of funk. A bit of oak and vanilla. Overall very dry and moderately sour/funky. Not quite as good as the nose but still very nice and complex.

Mouthfeel seems a tad watery, carbonation is pretty good though and drinkability is good.

Great beer. Would drink this all the time if it were a tad cheaper.

Served in a globe.

Pours a yellow-golden body with a modest layering of white bubbly foam. Leaves a slight yet noticeable amount of lacing.

The grains and yeast provide a nice sour and funky aroma. This just smells exciting.

There's a lot going on with the flavor, too much for me to understand. Sour fruits with caramel abound, followed by a little pepper and hop on the tail end. This is good.

Perfect level of carbonation allows all the complexities to come through.

This is really tasty. Really really tasty.

Poured from 750 ml bottle into a brandy snifter. Forgot to wait to let it warm up, so first blows were pretty chilled.

A-a clear pale yellow-gold colour. Looks like moderate carbonation. Poured with two fingers of fine white head. Low retention, but leaves some decent lacing in chunks and lines.

S-Lots of yeast funk. Some pale malt sweetness and a musty wooden smell.

T-Some sweet and sour crabapple with a healthy dose of yeast funk. Oak and a hint of hop bitterness linger on the pallet.

M-Slightly effervescent with a low-moderate carbonation. Finish is dry with a bit of hop astringency that isn't exactly pleasant (but doesn't overwhelm either).

O-Something different, that's for sure. Similar to Rayon Vert, but with it's own unique qualities. Will definitely grab one again.

A: The beer is clear light yellow in color and has a moderate amount of carbonation. It poured with a half finger high bright white head that died down and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface.
S: Light to moderate aromas of sourness are present in the nose, which also has some hints of lemon citrus.
T: Like the smell, the taste has a mild amount of sourness with some oaky flavors from the barrel aging; hints of lemon citrus are also present.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little tart on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is extremely easy to drink—no traces of alcohol are perceptible in the smell or taste. It seems to have a perfect amount of sourness to make things interesting but this also keeps it very drinkable. It definitely tastes unlike a typical bière de garde.

A: Pours a clear pale yellow with a 1/5 finger's worth of big bubbly white head on top. A column of bubbles from the middle. Very clean beer on first half pour. No sediment that I can see. Very nice looking.

S: Yeasty melons and bananas and grapes and green apples other fruit aromas. Sweet. Some breadiness. Very white wine-ish. This is fine -- not as spicy or peppery that I like in most similar style beers.

T: Some good spice/pepper in the taste. Some nice mature grape flavors too. Leaves a slightly bitter finish. Otherwise, taste is best feature of this beer so far.

M: Slightly thinner than I like. Carbonation is good. This beer doesn't bite like most of these Ales, which is a positive in my book. Some chewiness which brings out the grape flavor. Little bit of a rough feel. Nothing too special here.

O: I'm not a huge fan of this style. But, this is good. One of the better Saison-style beers I've had. I know it might not be a traditional saison, but I judge all these types of beers by Weyerbacher 17. This is good. I'd have it again. And, I'd recommend to fans of the style. Doesn't blow me away, though.

Pours golden yellow, slightly hazy with very small white head. Carbonation appears slightly low. The head sticks around despite it's size, and the lacing is quite sticky.

Smell is quite amazing. Tart apples, farmy brett, slightly cheesy, musty, with an underlying bready malt. Coriander, mild black pepper, and citrus (but not from hops), lots of fruit. Little to no hop aroma.

Taste begins with juicy tartness rounded off with bready malts. Tartness is at the forefront with funk right behind it. Despite the age, there are hints of spicy noble hop bitterness. Small amount of phenolics and spicy warming alcohol.

Medium carbonation but extremely dry. Not quite mouth puckeringly sour, but solidly tart. Very drinkable.

Probably my favorite from Jolly Pumpkin so far. I prefer this aged bottle to on tap, though on tap, it can be quite refreshing.

Poured a nice hazy bronze tinged yellow with a small white head. Smells of tart sour fruit, bretty funk and a little wheat. The first thing that hit my palette was the sour, not mouth puckering, but not terribly weak either. Next the waves of Brett, some hay, funk and that signature fruity-turned-funk goodness. Coronation is pretty nice, small tight bubbles roll over the mouth, but the lacing is minimal. The overall package is well done, not as sour as some of the JP offerings with a more pronounced Brett character, really well done and a great stepping stone beer for newbies in the realm of your/wild brews.

A-A light and hazy golden yellow with a small amount of sediment that falls to the bottom of the glass. Almost looks clear as it comes out of the bottle. Two finger head that fades quick but leave a nice thin cap.

S- A light funky aroma followed by tart fruit and some lemon citrus.

T-The funk from the nose is the first thing on the palate too, followed by a subtle sweet malt flavor that comes through after the funk fades. There is a light earthy sourness that that anchors this beer and holds it together. A slight alcohol presence in the aftertaste.

M-Light to medium body with lower levels of carbonation.

O-A nice smooth blend of sour and funk that is very drinkable. Nothing overly complex, just a solid well crafted beer.

Picked up two bottles of this back in the summer. Was bottled late May 2012, Had the first bottle shortly after purchase, and saved the second until now. I have to say a half year did this beer some justice, wishing I saved the other bottle for even longer. First bottle poured clear, while the second had some slight hazyness to it. Tastes just slightly sour, with some fruit tastes of green apples and grapes coming through with the tart finish. Incredibly easy to drink for 8% and the mouthfeel is quite nice. A pretty good beer overall, and I would love to have this with even more age on it.

Batch 1029
Bottled 06-20-2012

Oro De Calabaza boasts a clear, shiny golden body with straw yellow hues. It seemed the head was going to be a bunch of loose bubbles, so I poured more aggressively. Foam quickly moved to fill the top inch or so on the glass. While the receded to the aforementioned loose bubbles, full swaths of lace are left. What a gorgeous looking beer.

Sour light fruits greet the nose immediately: lemon juice and pith, tart and over-ripe apple. Funk atmospherics. The sour notes divert attention from other delicate aromatics. Prairie grass, fresh hay, wood, floral overtones, soft herbal hops and intermittent mild spice.

Surprisingly enough, sourness does hit the palate. Indeed, this has more of a farmyard and swamp wood funk to it than even plain old tartness. There is simply nothing to pucker about here (not that that's a bad thing). Maybe over-ripe. Some light fruits and modest hop tomes in the middle. The latter half has a toasted quality. The finish is where the cobweb, dust and musty oak reside en masse. Faint pepper on the finish, too.

The body is light, but not crisp; in any case, it is not lacking. Carbonation is low, though enough remains to accent there beer where it counts - in the mid-section.

I let this warm up a lot over time; I prefer it while it's still on the cool side. Worth a try, but this is really expensive.

This beer is a clear light-gold colored liquid with a soft and thick white head. Beautiful lace. The aroma is of soft pale malt with an equal amount of funk. There is a solid oak characteristic, with some distant peppery spice as well. The taste is subtle at first, with a firm bitter mid-taste and sharp finish. There is some funk, a little sourness, an a round softness in body that really accentuates the beer. The body is one of the most alluring traits of this brew. It's refreshing, in spite of its high ABV and very remarkably drinkable.

A: Pours an opaque hay colored yellow with a 1 finger white head that is quick to dissipate.

S: Has a light funk blended with saisony yeast. As it warms up more of the sour seems to come out. Get some spiciness and lemon citrus from the hops.

T: Smooth blend going on here, has great funk but also keeps the beer foundation. Hops manage to pull through some providing a spiciness. Malts are on the light end remain mellow throughout.

A: Pours a hazy medium golden yellow in color with some straw yellow highlights near the edges, a moderate amount of fine yeast particles in suspension, and a moderate amount of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall creamy white head that slowly reduces to a thick film covering the entire surface of the beer and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Moderately tart aromas of brett along with light fruits (apple, white grape, peach, and pear). Lighter notes of lemon zest and peppery yeast.

T: Light notes of malts in the background but the dominant flavors are the funky tartness of brett along with the light fruits (apple, white grape, peach, and pear). Lighter notes of lemon zest and peppery yeast. Very nice amounts of complexity.

M: Just heavier then light bodied with light to moderate amounts of carbonation. Almost silky in texture.

O: Extremely easy to drink due to the very well hidden alcohol (can't believe this is 8% ABV) and lighter notes of funky sourness. I really enjoy the flavors and aromas of this beer. Kudos to my mother-in-law for grabbing this one (and her and my grandmother-in-law both really enjoyed it).

2010 bottle, enjoyed on 11/9/12, poured into a HF stem.

Pour: Immediately starts gushing to the extreme, and continues for a minute or so after opening. Pours a hazy golden yellow, with a towering four finger fluffy white head. Head sticks around for most of the glass, and leaves nice thick lacing.

Smell: Belgian yeast up front, which provides a nice bready and spicy nose. A slight funk, but not much. Some tart lemon juice in there, but still not as strong as the belgian yeast components.

Taste: Follows the nose very well, with really great spicy yeast, white pepper, and coriander. Some biscuity malt sweetness, and a light tart lemon bite follow. Finishes dry, with a nice oaky barrel presence.

Mouthfeel: Not exceptionally drinkable, but very refreshing. Medium bodied.

Overall: Another great Jolly Pumpkin beer. I always over look them, and I need to stop, because I have yet to be disappointed by any of their beer.

A: Pours a hazy golden color with a touch of amber. A finger of foam forms, but quickly dissipates to a thin film.

S: This is a great, complex aroma. I get tart cherries up front with a nice amount of caramel and vanilla sweetness to balance. Behind that, some lighter fruits come out - mainly peaches. I detect a lactic acid aroma, but it's on the mild side.

T: Tart cherries are upfront again, I get a nice amount of musty funk just behind them. A mild lactic acidity develops balanced by a nice vanilla sweetness. I get a nice spicy quality as well, particularly in the aftertaste. The flavors mix well together, but I find them a bit muted.

M: On the thick side with low carbonation.

O: A nice, slightly sour Biere de Garde. I wish it was a bit drier, but this beer has a great complexity.

750ml bottle poured into tulip 26/10/12

A bright yellow liquid glows, lots of tiny particles and a few slow tiny bubbles, just a thin cap of bone white foam but it retains well and leaves lots of random lace where it existed

S its funky alright but not over the top, some lemon, a little damp hay and wet wood, some apple cider and faint spice, the barrels not over the top an the funk meshes with other aspects of the nose, no booze anywhere very well done

T more barrel then the smell and some very faint booze that was invisible on the nose, still funky but again its not over the top, some faint chewing gum from the yeast, and a dry sour note that's not quite vinegar

M well carbonated and light considering the strength, very faint heat but at 8% they've done a great job, apple and funky yeast linger on the finish, a little sour but far from turning my mouth inside-out, a little tannin and overall I wouldn't change a whole lot in this department

O solid stuff, I didn't know what to expect but was quite impressed. Smells terrific and feels great, I could've have another

A nice barrel aged sour that's not too sour or heavy on the barrel, I'd struggle to place this into a style so for now I'll just state its worth looking for
