look: 4 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4 | overall: 4.25
Appearance:
The beer itself pours a pale gold with white head. The beer is clear overall but a little hazy.
Smell:
The funk is strong with this one. I can get some hops but the funk and a little bit of pepper seem to dominate.
Taste:
Fuuuunnnkkkyyy!!! A nice sour taste with a bitter hop aftertaste. I can taste the pepper mixing with the funk and hops and covers the whole pallate but does not dominate it.
Mouthfeel:
Biting carbonation and light to medium bodied.
Overall:
Pretty good beer.

Big bottle poured into a tulip. $11. Oro is the go-to Jolly Pumpkin for reasons of availability, relative cost and overall excellence.
A: Glowing pale oro, and almost filtered looking. No murk. About a finger of head which leaves average lacing. Actively carbed.
S: Brett funk is apparent. Tart smells: kumquats, Smarties, underripe pears. Very inviting.
T: Not unlike the nose: tart but neither synthetic not fruity. Very nice. The funk is mellow, but apparent. I don't get any barrel-aged characteristics, however, for a beer touted as oak-aged.
M: A pleasantly light feel, though I've had bottles that were more carbonated. These can gush from overcarbonation, so perhaps in new batches (this one from Jan. 2013) this has been dialed back.
O: Oro de Calabaza is a cult classic and an ideal gateway into Brett beers, Gueuzes, and farmhouse stuff. This bottle wasn't as transcendent as the few I'd had a year or more ago, which maybe says more about my expectations than anything else. It's a beautiful beer; one of those rarities that's appropriate for almost any occasion.
EDIT: Looking back at the last few reviews, the comments are quite similar and the bottles seem to be from the January 2013 batch. Would love to read something from an aged bottle to get a grip on how ODC performs in the cellar.
