Nevermore sits at the crossroads of Oatmeal, Foreign Extra and American Stouts. Along with generous portions of chocolate and black malts, rolled oats contribute a smooth creaminess while the addition of premium cocoa makes this a very approachable stout. Think dark roast coffee and chocolate cake.

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours black with no light shining through. Head is thin, and there are clumpy yeast chunks floating around the glass. Head retention is good, but lacing is minimal.

S: Lots of chocolate and coffee notes, with almost no hop character. It smells too sweet, as if fermentation was not quite complete.

T: Much better. Roasty malt with flavors of coffee and chocolate. Hops lend a slight kiss of dry character on the back end.

Notes: This full-bodied stout was a slacker in some categories, but other aspects made up for it. Flavor is intense, but not over the top. Rich in flavor, but a beer that can be sipped on it's own or enjoyed with a dessert. As the first bottled release of this brew, it's a solid effort. I have a feeling that future releases will be much better. This is an up and coming brewery, and I have my faith in them.

Poured coffee black with a dark tan head
The aroma was roasted malts with a touch of coffee and a hint of chocolate.
The taste was roasted and almost bitter malt but the chocolate kept it from being bitter and the roasted malts kept it from being too sweet.
The feel was quite good, the oatmeal served to soften and seemingly blend the flavors.
OA, a very nice stout that I would happily drink on a regular basis.

Appearance: Pours a nearly jet black color with a medium, rich tan head. SRM of 24. (3.75)

Aroma: Moderate aromas of alcohol and marker phenols with some chocolate to back it up. Hints of dark grape among the phenols too. (3.25)

Flavor: Dark malts with chocolate, but submerged in alcohol. Moderate amount of phenols on the flavor, but less than the nose. Finishes with a alcohol and dark grape soda sweetness. (3.25)

Feel: Medium-bodied. Moderate carbonation. Sort of has a bite from the alcohol. Not creamy from the oatmeal that I would have expected. Finishes with an alcohol and chocolate sweetness that lingers. (3.25)

Compared to Deschutes' Obsidian Stout: Similar color and appearance. Less chocolate on the aroma and flavor. More dark malts, alcohol, and sweetness and less roasty.

Overall: Not a beer that I was expecting. I was expecting lots of chocolate and creamy oatmeal. Instead I got dark malts, hints of chocolate thrown among a giant alcohol phenolic aroma/flavor that gives it a sort of grape soda flavor with chocolate. Interesting, sort of appealing I guess, but not the chocolate oatmeal stout that I wanted. Not sure, maybe I"m completely wrong, but very different than was expected. Maybe I'll try it again sometime, but a chocolate grape soda isn't necessarily something that makes me come back. (Final Rating: 3.28)

12oz bottle. Poured out an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of foam. It smelled of chocolate, oatmeal and coffee. Nice roasted coffee and malt taste with subtle chocolate.

Taste: some smoked notes, chocolate malt oats, crisp easy finish. Mellow, earthy malty nose. Black/brown, mostly opaque, tan head some lace. Medium body.

Dark chocolate brown body with a thin, bubbly ring of head.

Aromas of crisp rice, chocolate malt-o-meal, and slight earthy aromas.

The flavor is mostly earthy, with dirt and breathing a musty basement. Very faint suggestions of both coffee and chocolate in equal strength at the finish line. Not a very solid performer.

Feel manages to hold onto a little creaminess as well as a tight carbonation that stings the palate and the belly. Roasty and oily finish.

Overall, not a stout I'll be revisiting again. It's far too dirty, definitely not chocolaty, or oaty. Yes, they may have used cocoa nibs in the boil, but it's far from concentrated enough to make it into the flavor profile.

Pours a silky black color with very little carbonation. Rich robust aromas and toasted malts. A much lighter stout on the tongue. Thin in texture, lots of oatmeal grain but more cocoa than chocolate flavors. Finishes very chalky on the taste buds. Quite interesting to say the least.

12oz bottle. Served in a snifter glass.

Pours a dark black body, creamy looking one finger offwhite head, above average retention, thin collar, bits of lacing. Smells of cocoa, a little bit of rubber, dark fruit, chocolate, mild roast. The rubber isn't really rubber per se, but it is more of a synthetic aroma if that makes sense. Flavour is milk chocolate, cocoa, touch of roast, grainy sweetness, mild synthetic tasting bitter chocolate milk finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, a bit thin in terms of depth, moderately bitter cocoa finish. A sipper. Overall, a decent stout with a big chocolate character to it, but some of it is synthetic tasting enough that it's not the most natural for me to drink easily.
