To be blunt, I ALWAYS expect a stout to be able to go stride for stride with a cigar - not necessarily a maduro - but at least a full flavored brown wrapper. THAT SAID, I do not review beers while having a cigar.

A: Opaque dark brown. thin head, thin lacing

S: Faint caramel

T: Faint flavors of caramel malt, with a sweet malt afterbite. No chocolate.

M: Lightweight body

O: The appearance and smell alone told me this beer would be on the LITE end of the stout style. Blindfolded I would not have guessed a stout - I might have guessed a porter but it is was to the light side of that style. It lacked the complexity gamut of the stout style and I would find this beer more acceptable as a porter. Without the blindfold - I might have even guessed it to be a black lager served cold enough. I generally test beers within their style temperatures. Ales, Stouts and Porters in the 55F and the pilsners and lagers in the 40F range. I think this is my first Rush River Brewing review - I would certainly like to try another offering of theirs in another style as some brewers are finessed in specific styles - much like chefs or bakers.

Good luck pleasing me next time Rush River Brewers!

an almost solid black pour with a finger of tan head. smells of toasted oats, cocoa, tobacco. tastes very light for an 8% stout - almost like drinking a melted bar of dark chocolate.. slightly bitter towards the end with an earthy tobacco like taste. medium body with a nice creamy feel but a little watery past the palate makes it feel like a light bodied beer. it's kind of weird to say it's a refreshing stout.

this is not a bad stout by any means. i quite like it actually, but it really has nothing that makes it stick out from most other stouts which is why my rating seems a little harsh. it's nice to have a beer with high booze content taste like a session stout! i'm cellaring the other bottle i got of this, we'll see how it is in a few years.

A- Deep brown, not thoroughly black. Head is one and a half fingers, cocoa brown. Retains mediocrely.
S- Smell is very pleasant. Dark chocolate, a bit of smoke, and a faint sweetness.
T- At first it is a big dark chocolate and smoke flavor. Very pleasing. Finish tails off with some abstract sweetness.
M- Mouthfeel is mediocre for the style. Light at first but it picks up a little chewyness in the finish. Low carb.
O- A good oatmeal stout that with a bit better body could be a great beer.

Reviewed from session notes.

A. An initially tall three finger sand colored head fizzles down to a loose layer of fluff in about a minute but leaves behind gorgeous layers of lacing on top of the opaque black brew.

S. Baking chocolate, tobacco, roasted black coffee.

T. Flavor is also centered around the chocolate flavor, with minimal hopping present. All the bitterness that does happen originates from the roasted malt itself. Finish does have a very brief flash of ester to it, but I kind of like it.

M. Crisp yet smooth, well carbonated medium bodied beer. Delicious.

Served at a good temperature with a nice, tan, foamy, thick, fine head that settles and a little lace. Color is an opaque black brown. Aroma is malt, roast, cocoa, trace vanilla, coffee, walnuts. Flavor's similar to nose with very good balance betwixt the sweet, tart, and bitter. Body and carboantion are very good for style. Finish is like flavor with vanilla and a little booze coming forward. Deceptively easy drinking beer. Great for chilly willys. And I like it too!
