Bottle dated 09-2011 poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: The beer is a murky brown with little head and only a bit of lacing, not an appealing start.

S: The aroma though is delicious, a nice malty aroma is behind a strong mesquite pulled pork BBQ smell, with maybe some apple smoke back there too...

T: The beer's taste is decent, though the body itself is thin and would be better served with a thicker mouthfeel and bit more malt. The dominant flavour is not surprisingly smoked malts, with a bit of apple in there too... Almost like a fruit based mop atop a slab of smoked meat. Enjoyable and balanced as the smoke is not overpowering.

M: Carbonation is light, and the body is thin.

D: Great, even with a few hiccups. Wish I had decided to try it before it was discontinued at the MLCC.

Bottle: Poured a murky light brown color ale with a medium size foamy head with good retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of very light smoked malt with some unrefined grain. Taste is more geared toward unrefined grain then smoke which is really shy. Body is quite full with good carbonation. Not bad but I was expecting a more smoky character.

Nice hint of smoke, not too much to be overpowering, but enough to know it is there. Smokey flavor lasts after the swallow, which is nice. Light mouthfeel, good carbonation to make the tastes spread in the mouth, but not leave a coating. Nice malt backbone to it so you know this is still a beer. A little fruitiness comes trough to add to the taste. Very little hops taste, probably hidden by the smoke.
Good dark copper color.

Very easy drinker, would do this again.

330ml bottle poured into a small snifter.

Pours a slightly hazey coppery-orange colour with two fingers of off-white head that subsides to a very wet lace. Decent head retention, although not much carbonation evident in the glass. Aroma is, unsurprisingly, smoky, with a background of honeylike sweetness and caramel malt. Lightly peppery and spicy in the background.

Flavour is smoky, but not too much so, very balanced between smoke and malt with a light spiciness in the background. That said, it lacks the pure meaty smokiness I like in a good Rauch. There's a light caramel sweetness in the foreground, but not much in the way of complexity. Mouthfeel is light and maybe a bit on the flat side.

For a Rauchbier, this one is damn near a session brew. It's light in the mouth and easy on the palate, pleasant but not brilliant by any means.

Nice initial head, but it dies quickly and leaves no lace. The beer is a cloudy light amber. Lots of continuous fine bubbles float upward like champagne.

Very subtle smoke aroma. This is more malty than smoke. Grainy.

Overall, quite dry. The smoke shows up well in the swallow. High level of carbonation masks the above average body. A malty offering with some mellow crystal to give it smoothness.

I find that most smoked beers overdo the smoke. This one does not.

Sorry but this following comment is in french :

Appearance : bière fumée (Rauchbier)
Smell, Taste : bière au subtil assemblage de malt d'orge torrefié et de malt fumé.
Drinkability : Ce breuvage inédit en France, accompagnera idéalement les plats et la cuisine élabores à base de charcuterie.

The head is dense and made of fine bubbles. It fades on a nice orange copper color body. The smell is very interesting: the smoke is enjoyably refined: not overwhelming, it is nicely balanced with hints of fruitiness. The smoke circles the mouth when you taste the beer, but again, doesn't overwhelm it. Nice dark malts, a fruitiness made of red fruits, overripe peaches and maybe hints of bananas. Notes of alcohol and citrus, with thick and grassy hops. It's good; the mouthfeel is quite round, and a bit sweet.
