Sometimes I forget about the massive variation in scale that exists within the craft beer world. Hanging around People's and Sun King and making frequent stops at Three Floyds and Millstream give me a certain idea of how big a brewery is supposed to be. Then I stumble across a place like this, located in a literal shipyard with a fleet of trucks waiting in front of a factory facade, and I remember just how much work and development goes into making a nationally recognized brand.
Years ago, when I first getting into good beer, Harpoon was the shit. It's one of those forgotten breweries, like Great Lakes and Victory, that used to be stylistic standard-bearers but have since gotten replaced several times over by the proliferation of local breweries. Go to a store now in any place that's not fucking horrible and 75% of the domestic craft selection will be from in-state. It makes sense; there's just that many breweries now. But they're all super expensive and most aren't that great. Once, not that long along, places like Harpoon helped build up the craft scene, and they did by widely distributed well-brewed, medium priced beer. They didn't have time to become EXTREME, because they were too busy being competent.
So here's the big, long, narrow, big, woody, tracklighted, big college bar brewery establishment thing that sits in the middle of an impressive brewing and shipping campus. The beers are Harpoon, which you've had. The service is friendly and the establishment is well worth touring.

I have always wanted to visit Harpoon but never have had time to travel to the opposite side of Boston. However, last time I was able to finally make. When you first walk in it is overwhelming how many people there are but it obviously means they have good beer!
The acoustics in the tasting room are horrible, very noisy environment which kind of hurt the ambiance. I of course chose to do a sampler of the special beers they had on tap at the time. They have three choices of samplers which was the first time I had ever seen, and I liked it. My girlfriend chose the IPA sampler as well so I got to try twice as many beers!
When I go to breweries I like to try the food as well but Harpoon only offered pretzels which was not enough to fill my appetite.
IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR FOOD NEARBY, try the Yankee FIsh market, it is a little hole in the wall on the way to the brewery. Their fish and chips was the best I have ever had and their fried clams were cooked perfectly. The pricing is reasonable and very fast service.
Overall Harpoon was a cool experience but the noise level, lack and food, and overpriced samplers was a bit of a turn off.

Been to this place 3 times so far. Parking can be a little tough sometimes.
Great place to go with a bunch of friends. Long beer hall style tables.
No real food other than pretzels.
> 10 Harpoon beers on draft, plus a logowear store, growler station etc. !!

Went to a function with my company to the brewery.
We were celebrating raising over $660, 000 for Dana Farber and the Jimmy Fund.
The staff couldn't have been better! Any time anyone needed anything they were right there.
They are also one of our big sponsors for Team Lanzoni.
The selection of beer was of course everything. I wish I could have tried it all. The pumpkin ufo is very good and the imperial ipa as well.
The atmosphere was perfect! Right on the water great views...even in the bathroom. (the urinals are below a huge window facing Boston)
Go...Have fun....Drink beer

Me and my girlfriend decide to go into Boston for the day to check out Harpoon. May i say it was an amazing time. There new Beer Hall is beautiful. It speaks to the brewery with dark woods cast iron. They have all of there beer on tap along with four beers that are exclusive to the beer hall. We original went for the tour alone but will be returning for a beer or two in the future. The tour was a great value at only 5 dollars. It was an hour long tour where you learn about there history there beer and how they run there operations. The last 20 minutes of the tour were devoted to an explanation of there products and an unlimited tasting. They did not have food except for there house made pretzels which were amazingly good with beer. If your in the sea port district of Boston I highly recommend you check Them out you wont be disappointing.

Was at Harpoon fest this year and it was rocking! They have tons of people with bands and beers for your entertainment. If you have never been it is like a college outdoor party minus the ice lug. They have some fun games like keg barrel bowling and wheelchair hoops. I'd recommend checking this out next year if your thinking about going. As for the brewery it was huge and the production line was very interesting. It doesn't cost anything to go on a tour, so check them out.

Made it here for their St. Patrick's day fest this past March. I only planned on showing up for a tour as I was in town for the weekend, but I was blown away by what I stumbled upon. Hundreds upon hundreds of people and a very wide selection of Harpoon to choose from. If you are ever nearby during one of their festivals, it is a must attend!

I thought the place looked really great - the tables are lighter wood and look to be hand crafted in a space that reminds me a lot of a loft with the exposed brick. There is a really nice vibe to the place and I saw people from all walks of life enjoying beers here - families celebrating graduation for local universities, hipsters, blue collar workers, and even grandparents.
Nice to see that they are using different glassware for the different styles of beer and the pours were quite good with an appropriate amount of head. Beers were served quickly so the head did not die down and the temperatures were appropriate for the style.
Service at the bar was quick and good - friendly/helpful. Service at the tables was a little more spotty, we had one server that was really good and attentive and another that we could not flag down for anything.
From a selection perspective, it is all going to depend on when you visit... When I visited they had a number of different styles available including a couple of UFO beers, one 100 barrel series beer, a speciality cask, and a nitro-tap.
The only food available is the fresh oven-baked (German style) pretzels available with a handful of different sauces - I enjoy those kinds of pretzels when I am drinking beer, so I think they are pretty good.
Prices are quite reasonable, especially in Boston.
One thing to note is that this place has somewhat limited hours - closes around 6:00 PM everyday.
