This has an interesting smoky thing going on to it that I feel isn't usually there for the style, but I do like it. Consistent and thick flavor. Hops are here, but are accents and not hijacking the experience. Smooth drinker, but a sipper. Not too many new beers from Rabbit-Duck cross my path, so always nice to find a new one.

Appearance: Pours a very dark, dark brown to black…head is mocha colored and made of tight, tiny bubbles…it starts thin and dissipates after only a few minutes...has a nice color, but lacks a bit of carbonation…(3.25/5)

Smell: Yum, tons of aroma here! Lightly roasted malt and a light dry chocolate up front…it’s really got a light, airy smell…balanced with fresh, light lemon peel citrus hops…as it warms, I catch a bit more of a earthy, roasted coffee bitterness…a very inviting aroma! (3.75/5)

Taste: Yum! Roasted malt, oats, lemon citrus, mild piney hops up front…I also get some dry, bittersweet chocolate and roasted coffee bitterness notes as well…it’s a very fresh taste, that is very balanced with tons of flavor…both the malt and hops are strong and could easily stand alone but combine to create something fantastic here…while it’s not overly complex, it’s simplicity is delectable…(4.5/5)

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with light carbonation…it fluffs up a tiny bit bringing roasted malt and mild roasted coffee bitterness to the palate…my mouth waters after every drink…a malty, roasted bitterness lingers in the after taste…(3.75/5)

Overall: This thing is fantastic! I’ve been loving the black IPA’s lately and this is definitely one of my favorites…the flavor is fresh and zesty while being full of roasted malts…though the exuberant hops keep this from straying too close to a porterish stout...Duck Rabbit likes to say they specialize in dark beers and this limited edition brew is more proof of that...having been one of my favorite microbreweries for the past few years, I always look forward to trying their seasonals/small batch brews…if you are in the N.C. area or anywhere where D-R is distributed, pick up a sixer of this solid beer and enjoy! (4.25/5)

A - Pretty much poured like the picture deep black hue, tons of carbonation leading to a dense inch and a half layer of head, and the only difference seems that my head is more of a darker shade of mocha. Excellent lacing.
S - Very hoppy in the nose as expected, very Black IPA like with roast and chalky yeasts as well. Hopefully it's not too dry.
T - Fairly dank hop profile leading to a somewhat acidic hop experience. The hops even rest on the palate seconds after sipping. After a few sips I do detect some roast and a touch of bittersweet chocolates. It's good but not great.
M - Smooth, very hoppy, and somewhat chewy.
Overall this is not something I would pick up again but it's a fairly decent Black IPA. Definely more hop forward than I expected.

No label information. Hoppy Bunny ABA is brewed in the style of a Black Ale/Black IPA. Date on bottle is notched at September 2012.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle to a Duck Rabbit snifter. Served upwards of 50º Fahrenheit.

(Appearance) Pours an explosive thick, creamy light brown head with very good retention over a solid black body. Lacing is thin and streaked. The appearance is solid and the head looks fantastic for the style. There's plenty to look forward to in this beer. 4.5

(Smell) A robust aroma for a black IPA, swings slightly sweet with deep roasty characters. Heavily roasted caramel and a touch of black malt, notes of molasses and licorice in tow. Expect an earthy, resiny hop aroma presence with a moderate bitterness. Yeasty profile is a tad buttery and fruity; I get whiffs of plum and blueberry most notably. Some slight alcohol is also present. People will enjoy this aroma if they're interested in a malt-heavy and sweet black IPA, but a touch more hop presence would balance out the aroma and make the beer even more approachable. 3.75

(Taste) A little more laid back is the flavor- the malt takes a balanced role with the hop presence. A blend of resiny and soapy hop flavor prevails with a medium bitterness paired with a heavily roasted malt base. Some mild char and licorice graces the finish. Much less diacetyl throughout than the aroma had suggested. I like the balance a bit better than similar beers within this style as the hop flavor is better utilized and there's a bit of flavor diversity to be had here with the hops and yeast, although the hop choice is relatively one-dimensional- some citrusy bright hops would have been a great choice for this style but are largely absent. Not all flavors mesh ideally when lumped together- the problem points will likely become known to each individual consumer on a case by case basis. 3.75

(Mouthfeel) A bit creamy despite low carbonation. Body is medium+ for the style and medium overall. Alcohol presence is low. Could have used a touch more carbonation activity to bring some more attention to the hop character. 3.5

(Overall) This Black IPA is malt-forward but carries a sufficient hop profile as well. I found some questionable issues with the hop selection (mostly resinous but limited in variety and brightness) and the yeast profile (odd buttery notes and dark fruit presence), all of which were suspiciously odd picks for the style, but made for a different drinking experience. I haven't found my ideal Black IPA choice yet, but this one is certainly memorable for taking lots of different directions than I'm used to with the style, and thus it's a welcome addition to the Black IPA family. 3.75

a deep brown/black in color, 2 inches of tan head leaving behind a ridiculous amount of lacing. smells mostly of chocolate and roasted grains, along with a subtle grassy hop note. the taste is, once again great. these guys know dark beers, that's for sure. a wonderfully balanced subtle smoky, chocolatey, toasted black ale. barely any sign of hops at this point (best before 11/12 stamped on the bottle.. guess i was sold an old bottle, oh well) but that's more than ok since it's a wonderful malt profile.
the mouthfeel is odd.. highly carbonated yet a thick medium body beer. creamy on the lips/palate.

a great dark bitter ale. i'd love to try it fresh and see what the hop profile is like, but by no means can complain about it with a bit of age on it.

Poured from my home keg with a nearly opaque color brown color and a thick beige head that leaves a lot of lacing on the glass. The aroma is a dull but varied mix of chocolate and herbal hops. The flavor is a bit more lively, with an earthy combination of hops and roasted malts. The light, resinous mouthfeel supports this flavor profile nicely. Overall, this beer is roasty and multi-dimensional without being too overbearing like I find many in this style to be, making it a flavorful selection that goes down easier than its alcohol percentage would suggest.
