If this is the best Draegar's in the Bay Area for selection, I don't want to see the worse. Fairly limited selection, all in all. Usual suspects, with really only one standout late Sept 2011: Older Viscosity. A few locals represented as well: Telegraph, Speakeasy. Otherwise, nothing you can't find anywhere else. The prices are also high.
Maybe this was an abnormal visit, but not a soul was around to help select beer. This was not the case in the wine section, where there was a very knowledgeable employee to help walk me through the isles. Plus, the wine selections, on the other hand, were much more carefully selected. If only this were a wine review....

I've been to several Draeger's around the Bay Area, and this is the best one I've found so far (I haven't been to the Danville location as of this review). Not only is it great for beer, it's great for just about everything else.
It's a very nice store and appears larger than their other stores. Everything is neat and orderly. Their beer selection is very good, and is probably the best in San Mateo.
All of their beer is stored in a cooler which runs the length of an isle, and they have 6 packs of many different beers, with bombers along the top of the cooler.
I was surprised how many different quality beers they had; especially considering their other peninsula stores weren't nearly as stocked. I didn't see any unusually hard to find high quality beers, but they seemed to carry a little of everything that you can generally find at the better beer stores. A very good selection for a grocery store, even better than the Whole Foods Market in San Mateo (but less than some of the Whole Foods Markets further down the peninsula).

A damn good beer store. Without a doubt the best beer selection in a grocery store I've ever seen. Draeger's is an upscale grocery store located in downtown San Mateo with a huge beer aisle full of an excellent beer selection.
Their import selection is very impressive; lots of Belgian, German, and British selections. 80% of which I have never seen in a grocery store before. Several of their import selections are relatively hard to find, your probably only going to find them at a handful of locations in the Bay Area. They also had at least one selection from several countries that you rarely see, such as Romania, Croatia, Poland, & Russia.
Their American craft selection was less impressive. Certainly a good selection but not great. Lots of local stuff but nothing that's too hard to find. Draeger's also sells singles and allows you to break 6-packs which is a huge plus in my opinion. Another big plus is that everything is in a cooler. Their prices were also great, some of the lowest I've ever seen.

Stopped here while in San Francisco last week. Found it on BA, and was looking for a few beers to drink while in town (or maybe some rarities to take home).
The selection was outstanding. It's similar to Anderson's in Columbus OH (my normal stop at home), but more upscale and less midwestern. The prices were very reasonable (I bought a Rochefort 8 for $4.99).
I was unhappy to find no Russian River beers, which I thought you'd find everywhere in San Francisco... But high marks for good selection otherwise.

Let me start off by saying that this is the best selection I have ever seen for a grocery store. Draegers is a very very high class grocery store. Most of the people from Hillsbourough and Burlingame use this store as their main market. It's very upscale. Hundreds of cheeses, a whole freakin isle of olive oils. Great fruit and veggie selection as well as bakery and a gourmet chocolatier. They also have a huge wine selection and wine tasting. This leaves the beer. They have one isle plus and end display of pure beer. The best part is that most of it is good beer. I would compare this store to a Whole Foods, but with slightly more selection. They had many beer there that I haven't seen before. I'd never seen the St Bernadus Trippel in the bombers, nor the Hitachino Nest in the large bottles. Plus they had just about all the trappist beers and a large assortment of CA micro's. They are however a bit overpriced. Not real bad, but they are a bit over the top. But then, if you shop here, you can afford it. I don't think anyone that shops here brings in less than 6 figures. Check it out if you are in San Mateo. You will definitely find something you like.
