Beer and wine superstore. Clean, well lit, well organized. Great selection of craft beers, with shelves of singles organized by state and country of origin. Also features a growler fill station. Excellent selection of wines as well, plus cigars, glassware, and accessories. A little bit of everything, and well worth a visit.

This Total Wine is near my office in Downtown Norfolk, so I have been going there on lunch breaks lately. The selection and size of this Total Wine is by far better than the Total Wine by my house in Chesapeake. I have purchased many more beers at this store as a result of them not carrying the beers at the Chesapeake store. This store used to be a car dealership so it is quite large and it's filled all the time! The staff is always helpful when I have needed to ask them a question. I will be continuing to frequent this store at lunch for many weeks to come!

This store has an OK selection of craft beer although the ones I have been to in Florida seem to have a bigger and better selection. It is right down the road from the Tap House and not far from the Birch so I will stop in and stock up when I head down there. I actually make the drive to Virginia Beach to go to Grape and Gourmet who have a larger and more in depth selection when I am serious about getting "the good stuff". But overall they do OK. The staff there will help you if asked but usually leave you alone to make your choices unless you ask. They are always friendly and helpful. My wife is the wine drinker so she loves going there quite regularly, which means I get to pick out my favs to stock the old cellar!

Total Wine on 21st Street is a wonderful place to pick up a few good, hard-to-find brews. They have a Make-Your-Own-Six-Pack section, but don't be fooled-- you don't have to buy six. You could make your own 4 pack or 3 pack, even. Just don't drink half a beer and try to make a 2.5 pack. The beers in that section are priced individually, and that's where you'll find the best selection of rare things like Trappist Ales, Belgian Beers, imported Stouts, and seasonal brews. They also have an extensive selection of pre-made six packs and commercial macros.
For a place that ostensibly focuses on wine, they do fairly well in the beer department. The staff, primarily composed of women, is knowledgeable about the beers they carry and will help you if you ask; otherwise, they'll generally leave you alone to make your own choices. None of that holier-than-thou beer snobbery here.
It's a great place to go if you want to take your time and sample beers; however, the Taphouse is just down the street on 21st Street if you want to try a lot of the same beers in a bar environment.

I am a regular to this place, and I stop in at least once a month to see if there is anything new. I will admit the selection isn't the greatest, but they do have some beers that are difficult to find around the area. I have been disappointed a few times going into the store, because I tend to stand and stare for a solid half hour before even thinking about picking anything up. American micros seem to take up a lot of shelf which is not much of a problem because they have some good ones like He-brew and a few of the Brooklyn Brewery brands.

Compared to a few other Totals I've been to around the area (and the ones in FLA), this one's beer selection was not that great. They have a decent amount of micros and local beers (although I think the VA breweries are par at best). Other Totals I have been to have a large selection of Belgians and other imports - this doesn't. Barely a Belgian to be found, and the import selection was rather weak. Still worth going into if you're in the area and headed down the street to the Taphouse, and prices aren't bad, but I'd hit the one at the beach or in Chesapeake first if you're looking at a drive.

Stopped in here to check it out and ended up buying a bunch of stuff.
All the beers that I purchased were fresh. Many of their selections were in the cooler.
Very good selection spanning the continent, plus a fair array of Belgian selections. Many available singles. I was excited by the Oskar Blues selection, as I'd never seen canned microbrew!
Not alot of people to help if you need it, but the lady that checked us out was incredibly friendly and told us which local places to go if we wanted good beer. She was obviously a dedicated microbrew drinker.
As far as prices go, I was impressed with our final bill, but probably because I'm used to MI prices/ taxes.

This Total Wine location has the unique distinction of being close to the Taphouse at Ghent. It was on the way and so I dropped in not expecting much.
The selection was actually better than some of the other TW locations I had visited around Virginia. They had local beers like St. George and Williamsburg that locations like Richmond had pretty much overlooked. The Richmond store had a much better selection, but this location is clean, well laid out and the beer selection is not half bad.
I'd drop back in again if in the area. I doubt the selection will vary very much, but you never know.
