This store is located in a strip mall in the heart of the western suburbs shopping area. It's about 1.5 miles east of Granite City and 0.5 miles east of Rock Bottom. The site used to be a housewares store, but Cost Plus has been in there for what must be approaching a year now. I had no idea that they sold beer, but my wife clued me in last week so I thought that I'd check it out.

The beer and wine is located in a back corner of the store. I wasn't expecting an overly impressive selection since Iowa laws and limited distribution of some of the better US micros precludes that. The selection was decent, but nothing to get excited about. They did have a fair number of singles, things that I haven't seen elsewhere in the area so that's a plus. I picked up 2 mixed sixers of things like Belhaven, Mactarnahan's, Murphy's, Negro Modelo, Sapporo, McEwan's, Dixie, Saxer, etc. As I said, nothing too exciting and nothing that anyone who doesn't live within 3 miles of this place (as I do) should bother themselves with. I may go back in the future to see if they have rotating selections that will interest me, but there are plenty of other places in the area that will get my business first.

The idea behind World Market's beer selection is a good one. Plenty of decent beers available along with imports and seasonal brews, ready for the picking. The problem is obvious when you walk in, no refrigeration. ALL beer is at room temperature. Even though it's winter, I want to be sure my beer is fresh. I picked up the import pack and found lots of them to be lemons. There's no telling how long that beer's been around. Does the staff know what they are selling, nope. Are the prices higher than they are at my regular beer stores, yes. Have I ever needed to buy an Indian-style scarf with my beer, well, yea, the wife wanted one for Christmas, but other than that, and all the chocolate, this place doesn't get my business that often.

This visit to World Market was completely unplanned. I almost drove past it after my girlfriend and I left a nearby mall. At the last minute I pulled into the large parking lot (which is shared with many other stores).

In the far back, to the right is the beer. The selection at this store is bigger than both Omaha stores. Like every WM I’ve visited, everything is stored warm. No B/M/C, sure there are import beers that are yawners but they had about 6-9 beers, in singles, that I’ve never had. I purchased five of them. There was no Millstream beers, however there was two offerings from Goose Island, three from Boulevard, four from Rogue, three from MacTarnahan's, plus common Mexican beers and an array of “odd” Euro-lagers and beers from Paulaner, Chimay, etc. Overall the selection is decent, it was exactly what I was expecting as I know what is readily available in Iowa. I thought the prices were pretty good.

There was no help available in the liquor department. The checkout lady was pleasant.

They also carried those lousy mixed 10-packs of “American Micros” or “World Beer.”

Plenty of cheap glassware is available.

All and all, the selection at this WM is less impressive that the two Omaha stores (which is odd because decent beer stores in Des Moines murders the best beer stores in Omaha). There isn’t any need for a BA to seek this store out, I assumed that going in, but what the hell, I stopped anyway.
