Driving to the place felt like we were heading to the middle of nowhere. Coming from Traverse City we had to go around a big lake making 30 miles as the crow flies about 50 miles. But it was worth it. My wife and I enjoyed our time there.
It's got a cozy atmosphere and a large tap list. We started out with a sampler of five beers. I wanted to try the Strawberry Short Cake, but didn't really want a pint. It was very well done, but the sampler was more than enough for me. The other beers on the sampler were all good and I ordered a pint of the ControvsiAle. Great beer! I bought a sixer of that to take home.
The next time you're in the middle of nowhere, stop by!

This place was great. We stopped in on a Thursday for lunch while in the area. We had a flight of 5 tasters for $8.75 I believe. You could pick any 5 from the tap list no matter what class they were in. I picked something from all categories, every beer I had was very good and hit its mark stylistically. We had a pizza that was fantastic. If I lived in the area this would be the place I order pizza from. We had a great time and I'm looking forward to going back.

Shorts is my favorite brewpub in Northern Michigan. There are several other brewpubs right in or near Traverse City and I often will drive 45 minutes just to get to Short's. The beer is that much better there.
If you are a pale ale fan you will be in heavean; they usually have 5 or 6 on tap. I usually get half pints so I can sample 3 or 4 beers and then I take two growlers home. My favorites are the huma lupa liscious, hangin frank, coffee stout and the autumn ale.
The food is always good too, great sandwiches and pizza.
My only complaint is that sometimes the food takes too long - over 30 minutes - but the beer is so good I don't mind waiting. The staff is really friendly but I wish they knew more about the beer because there are always beer geeks there asking questions.

I have been to Short's several times. I am from lower Michigan and am fortunate enough to have a summer cottage on a quiet lake about 30 miles from Bellaire, where Short's is located. My wife and I often ride over to Short's for a late lunch and a few beers.
Atmosphere: this place is what you expect in a brewpub. Cool music, good food, interesting building, and a variety of friendly people. No pretentiousness here.
Beers: there are only 3 or 4 breweries in Michigan that produce the selection and quality that Joe Short does. Across the board, Joe produces solid products, and is a true brewmaster.
Service: I think Short's is challenged with being able to retain staff. They have some good friendly people, but sometimes the staff seem indifferent. The staff seem to come and go, but there are a few superstars, like Leah, that do a great job and hold the place together.
Food: a great menu for a brewpub. They basically have a deli menu, but it is solid, with quality breads and meats, and not your ordinary stuff. Many of their selections are made fresh and use fresh, local products, including some meats from the local "smokehouse" which is worth a stop if you are going to Bellaire.
Closing comments: my wife and I love this place. We usually have their beer on tap in our home kegerator. Highly recommend a stop here if you are within 300 miles!

I have been a huge fan of Short's beers for a long time. There really is no one who takes the chances that Joe does with beer, hit or miss. I buy a lot of it.
The hits are usually quite delicious, and the misses just as bad the other way.
So I stopped in on the way back from Traverse City on 10/10/10, it was actually bit of a detour.
Had a sandwich, pretty good, a bit too much of the mayo, but not bad. I liked it. The pilsner was really good, the Huma good, of course.
What I didn't like was one of the bartender persons (Jessica) copping an attitude with me twice, as if I was inconveniencing her and I wasn't there spending money in their establishment. It wasn't even busy and she treated me as if it was just too much to ask for a napkin or what was in the cooler. Throwing the beer list at me without explanation is ridiculous, when I inquired what were the 22oz bottles in the cooler as is not responding to me when I asked for a napkin and then getting surly and yelling at me when I asked again. What in the world...bush league amateur stuff. I've worked in all manner of restaurants, you just don't do that. There were ten people in the bar, it was not busy.
Very disappointing, very much so. No tip, and I actually won't make it a big point of going back. You tend to remember the negatives long term, they make a bigger impression if they happen, and they outweigh the positives.
There were two other servers that were good and attentive so they weren't all as anti-social.

They have 20+ unique brews on tap, and a few unique beers you cant get in stores down in SE michigan.. even from the Beer Baron without a special order etc. Which was cool to see the selection at the Pub.
The service is more like a deli, order yourself and grab and go for beer. They bring the food out to you which is awesome. Went on a sat. and then a sun. evening. Excellent atmosphere! Loved every minute of it.. wish it was closer to home.
The beer was super fresh and the prices were more than fair! Will most definitely go back every summer.. a MUST see and experience place.
*** We ended up going back again and staying a night at the hotel across the street (Stone Waters Inn) just to hang out at the brewery again and spend a relaxing evening up north.
They had live music scheduled the ENTIRE weekend according to their board.. Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sun.
The band was pretty good, even though Im not much of a bluegrass fan, it was a change of pace and a great atmosphere.
The line at the counter to order can become extremely long, so it helps to keep an eye on it and go when the line dies down. Going on 3 different nights.. a thursday.. then a saturday and even sunday night.. this place was PACKED pretty much all the time..which is AWESOME. Its great to see a company that worked hard and invented such quality brews and a unique image have such success!
If your from Michigan you absolutely MUST visit the Pub in Bellaire, Top notch experience every time!
They added a 2nd bar which really cuts down the lines! Love this place still.. we actually set a vacation every year to go here for a night and drink at shorts!! We stay at the hotel across the street! Excellent !

Living only two hours away it should not have taken me two years to visit this place but it did. Went there on a family vacation to the Traverse City area. I got there close to 5:00 P.M. on a Thursday with my in laws, wife, and our two children, ages 6 & 2 at the time. I was a little worried about bringing in the kids but the atmosphere is very family friendly. In fact after we sat down at least three other families with young kids came in. There were even a couple young teenage boys there enjoying a deli sandwich and a bottle of hand crafted root beer.
You seat yourself and have to go up to the counter to place an order, which is okay unless there is seven or more people in line to order something. There just isn't enough room at the counter to handle a rush of people. So no waitress to take your order from the table all orders are taken ant the counter. That is my only gripe. Everything else is perfect. Two beers and a growler for $22 is a very good deal for me.
If you ever visit be sure to GET THE FLIGHT! Five decent sized samplers for one low price. Still kicking myself over not seeing that till it was too late!

My family and I were taking a short road trip in MI and thought to stop there for supper. Turns out the place was quite busy. We expected to be taken to a table and offered menus. But this was far from what we thought. Like Panera Bread, we had to order at the front before grabbing a seat. The food sounded delicious but unfortunately there was only one main vegetarian item. While I was trying to not eat a lot of meat, I ended up ordering a bacon sandwich. It was tasty but wished there were more options to pick from.
Then after ordering we had to find a table for the three of us including my 20 month old. Unfortunately it was quite a tedious task. We could not find a single place to sit. It was full and there were no tables outside either. We ended up standing for 5-10 minutes just hoping someone would leave the table so we could snatch it before someone else did. Unfortunately that did not happen. A staff was kind enough to help us find a table. She ending up asking a group of people if we could share the table with them as there were spare chairs. They were kind enough to let us sit there and all went well.
The beer was fantastic. I really enjoyed Soft Parade. Its high in alcohol and very deceptive. Before the food came, I was feeling quite a buzz. But I enjoyed it. When we left I ended up buying a pint glass and some beers for the road as my souvenirs.
Overall the food was good but struggling to find a table was a big deal-breaker in my opinion. I also wished for more vegetarian options (I know this may not matter to most people). In addition, I would also not recommend this place for kids. Too crowded with little space. My hats off to the staff though as this seemed like a stressful environment to work in.
Also what I was most impressed with was the large tap list. Too many beers to pick from and I only had one. I wish I tried another but we still had to drive to a campground.

Bellaire, MI is kind of the middle of nowhere, but Short's Brewing is well worth the trip!
The selection of brews is great. I especially liked that their brews were unique, and ran the spectrum. (I find that craft brewers tend toward the porter and stout end of the spectrum when they make really unique beers.)
I also liked the fact that their menu had food for all ages, which means you can bring the wife and kids with you if you're on vacation (like we were.)
It would have been nice to get table service for our food, but the bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly, so ordering everything at the bar wasn't that bad.

I stand by my statement that Michigan has outstanding breweries. Short's is no different. A little off the beaten path, but definately worth the trip. My girlfriend and I were on vacation in Traverse City and took the 45 minute drive to visit Short's.
We walked in around 4:00 on a Thursday afternoon and it was pretty empty. They have a walk up counter for you to place your order. I went up planning to order my usual Huma Lupa, but the bartender offered up some samples (free) of other beers she thought I might like. One of them was Kind Ale which I thought was a phenomanal beer. I ordered a pint of that while I perused the other options. Next was a sampler including Huma Bourbon, key lime, and some other ones. Short's is never shy about trying unique beers. not all of them hit, but more often than not, I like what they do.
If you are looking for a large menu, don't. They are limited to sandwhiches, salads, and pizza. I had a sandhwhich and it was very good. Lets face it though...you come here for the beer.
The service was first rate. From the knowledgeable and very friendly bartenders, to the attentive busstaff who was always around to clean up the table, to the manager who took us through for a tour of the brewery. We felt welcome.
The prices are also very reasonable with most pints available for $3. A little more for premium pours.
We left as the brewery got pretty busy towards the evening hours. I left with a full belly, drank some very good beers, and had a great time. Even left with t-shirts and a few 6 packs for home.
I was very impressed on all fronts.
