Went to Shorts Brewpub in July for the Jetty Rae show. She rocked by the way. It is a small cozy venue decorated very cool, nice little bottle collection by the bathrooms. The prices for beer were not bad and they had a very wide selection, also they sell six packs and growlers to take home (the growlers are a GREAT deal). I got a flight which is 5 different samples of beer that you choose from the long list of stuff they have on tap. Got some food while we were there which was a little bit pricey, but the pizza above all was really good (especially after a few beers). At the end of the night i got a growler of huma lupa licious to go, and couldn't have been happier. I miss shorts beer now that I moved to NYC, but I will definetly go back my next trip to Michigan. I definetly reccomend this place to anyone who hasn't gone yet.

Visited yesterday afternoon with my wife after sending a couple days in Traverse City & Old Mission Peninsula (more-or-less Michigan's wine region). Although the bar seats around 8-10, there were a couple open stools (with backs - nice). Being a Huma Lupa fan for over a year now, I brought a couple empty growlers. Refills only 8 bucks! They even honored my 'foreign' growlers with no problem.
The place is exposed brick walls with 14 ft. high ceilings, exposed HVAC ducts, nice woodwork and a cool bar top that reminded me of an old bowling lane - but with cooler designs, insets, etc... The room 'live music' room connected to the main 'bar-food' room is way-cool. No live acts while I was there, but it's nice to have the option to listen from the other side or sit in the midst of the music. Hardwood & tile floors, good amount of scattered tables and lots of natural light from the front windows.
Selection was crazy! Everything you could ever want (except a draft stout - no biggie though). I even got to enjoy the first tapping of the Funkin' Punkin' right before I was about to leave. My wife was very gracious sticking around while I 'had to' try a pint, (of which I had my 2nd growler filled)! I tried the Noble Chaos, Black Cherry Porter, Reg. & Chocolate Wheat, Autumn Ale, and London Red - ALL SPECTACULAR!
Food was terrific. Minestrone soup, Crostini & warm artichoke & cheese spread, warm pita chips with gourmet olives, feta spread & hummus - ALL SPECTACULAR! The pizza & wraps looked awesome. Our service was exceptional with warm and friendly smiles and attitudes with good knowledge of the products.
Overall I would be the happiest man alive if Short's were in my hometown. I'd literally be there almost everyday. The prices are very reasonable. The food is unique, high quality and tasty. The beers are top-notch in every aspect and priced very fair ($3-$6). A 'must try' if you're in the area or jonesin' for a fantastic beer destination!

Visited Short's most recently on 10-8-13 as part of a week long vacation in the Traverse City area. My wife and I have visited Short's before, last time was on a busy Saturday afternoon (2012 Memorial Day Weekend) so it was nice to experience this place on a more calm Fall Tuesday afternoon.
We walked into Short's and there were no seats at the bar. We walked up to the ordering area/ register and ordered a few pints. Walked to the second/ back bar area and grabbed a table. This is also the area with the stage, I have seen that they have live music during evening hours. Seems like a good venue for it. After about a half hour, we felt like we were missing out so we checked and 2 seats opened at the bar. We bellied up and really began to enjoy Short's. Our bartender came over by us, took our order, and introduced herself to us. She then asked what our names were, which was a definite personal touch. Everyone that works at Short's is super friendly, all look extremely happy to work there.
The beer menu is extremely impressive, I believe they had 20 or so taps on hand. There looked to be about 5 or 6 of their usual beers, 6-10 rotating beers, and a few one offs. This was the same the last time I was here, so I can only assume it is always like that. Prices for the beers are exactly were they should be, Pints and Flights included. I wasn't disappointed with any of the beers we tried (in fact, we loved 95% of them!), we went through a few flights and a few pints during our 3ish hour visit. They had a BBQ beer on, it was surprisingly tasty!!!
We also had a couple of appetizers while at Short's, both dishes were tasty and huge for the cost. Worked well to offset the effects of all the beer we consumed. I think the next time I visit Short's I am going to get a sandwich or pizza, they both look real tasty!!
Overall, I absolutely LOVE Short's. It is one of my favorite Michigan stops, worthy of being a destination especially considering the area it is in...absolutely lovely! If you haven't been here and you are going to be in the area, make it a point to get here!

Short's is such a great brewery. Being in Bellaire, the town has a nice and cozy feel to it that the brewery mimics quite well. Everyone seems to know everyone else, the pourers were really nice, and people remember your name.
The atmosphere is very cool, with lots of exposed brick, wood, some great Cadillac chairs, and two large, sprawling rooms. One room is the bar, and the other has a stage for concerts and such.
The service was great, and everyone was more than helpful. Even while it was packed (for the Anniversary party), everyone pouring had a smile on their face, and you would wait in line for less than a minute.
The selection is top notch. A phenomenal array of both experimental and traditional brews, with a plum stout, a coffee stout, and a great fruit beer that all stood out. Also, their hoppy beers, including their Anniversary Ale, the Stellar Ale, and the Huma Lupa Licious IPA were phenomenal. The bottle selection is also great.
Basically, Short's has a great up-north feel to it, but still captures the urban quality of my local breweries. Joe creates some killer brews, and you'd do yourself a disservice if you didn't make at least one trip up here.
I highly recommend this spot, and will come back again soon.

My wife and I have gone to Short's once or twice a year over the last three years and have had a great experience every time. There are always a few surprises on the tap list that are worth trying, and the old standbys are great, too (for me, these are Pandemonium, Humalupalicious and some others). The food is great, too. We've usually had the pizzas and an appetizer or two, and have never been disappointed. The atmosphere is just what you would want from a brewpub in northern michigan--laid back with great music and friendly people. It was a great move to add another bar so that there's now one in each of the two main rooms within the place. To sum up--we recommend this place to anyone who is gonna be up that way. You won't be disappointed!

Atmosphere-This brewery is located in the quaint sleepy town of bellaire is a real gem. The brewery is located in an old brick building. The brew pub has hardwood floors with a small stage in the back for live band performances. Plenty of seating room with lots of tables, some of the artwork are blown up pictures of some of their beer labels. Only knock is that there is not much seating available at the bar. Not overly crowded but it does get busy at times. Friendly staff and patrons.
Quality/selection- there are over 20 beers on tap. All of there year round line up is available along with many of their seasonals and several one offs. I always get a sampler just so that I can try a greater variety of their beer. Some of the beers that I have tried here are sweet taters, Wowee Zowee, The Duke, and the Woodmaster. The woodmaster and Wowee Zowee were both awesome. Every beer I have had from them has been of at least a mid B to a high A in quality. No bad beers here.
Service- The service is not to bad but could be better. When you know what beer you want you walk up to the counter and let them know what you want and then they will bring it to you. The wait time from ordering your food to receiving it is reasonable.
Food- The sandwiches here are incredible! My wife hates sandwiches but even she raves about how good the food is here. All the ingredients are extremely fresh and their is even a kids menu if you decide to bring the kids along.
Overall, this is one of my favorite breweries to visit and may be my favorite. The quality of everything is amazing, the beer and food are both top notch. It is laid back enough that you could bring your kids with you but still has enough of a bar feel to it that you don't feel uncomfortable drinking in front of families. Highly recommend this to anyone in the Traverse City area.

We found this place while vacationing via an article in a weekly newspaper circulated in the NW Michigan area.
The atmosphere is very cool. The owner and friends worked on this place for a year and a half, comverting it from a hardware store to a full service brewery and restaurant. It is set up for live entertainment and we were fortunate enough to catch a little of a jazz band that was playing. The bartender Chad was very friendly and made it a point to introduce himself and ask the name of every customer coming in. It was divided into two parts, one part for dining and conversation and the other side primarily catering to live music.
It is a very good quality brewery. A lot of work went into it and the staff was very friendly.
The service was outstanding. Chad hustled his butt off the two hours we were there.
There were about 9 beers to choose from but being the IPA junkie I am I only sampled that.
The food was near perfect. I had the apple smoked pork sandwich that was melt in your mouth.
The only disappointment was that Joe the owner did not acknowledge our presence at the bar.

The brewpub in Bellaire is a real treat for any Short's enthusiast. There are two sections - one with the main bar, and another larger area with a stage for live entertainment and another bar in the back. Family friendly atmosphere, at least on the Sunday that I visited. There were 21 beers on tap if I counted correctly. Had 2 flights to cover the styles we like and that were brewpub only offerings. First flight was Superfluid DIPA, In the Wheat of Passion (passionfruit wheat), The Village Reserve (CA Common), Schnozzleberry Griffin (oolong tea/blackberry wheat), and Chatterbox Pale. All were exceptional but the two wheats and Superfluid were definitive favorites for us. Second flight was another Superfluid, Cinnabilly (cinnamon doppelbock), Lession Siberator (sessionable Liberator, and definitely the tastiest session beer I've ever had - only 3.7%!!!), Soft Parade, PB & Banana Wheat. Again, you couldn't go wrong with any of them. My fiancee had the Puerto Rican Power and I had a pizza. My pizza was good, and my fiancee said hers was one of the best chicken quesadillas she's ever had.
If you're in Northern MI, you MUST make the drive to Bellaire and visit the brewpub. You will not be disappointed. Out of the 23 Michigan breweries I've visited, this is easily top 2.

Went to da UP and figured I would hit Short's on the way down. I walked in the door and the place looked clean, new and inviting. It was fairly busy (around 5pm), but the tall ceilings make it so the crowd noise wasn't so disruptive.
The quality of their beers is excellent, but I've only scratched the surface...
The service was great but they were busy and apparently in between shift changes so they seemed a bit slowed down due to the amount of orders. Very friendly and smiling staff. I asked some specific questions pertaining to the nature of the hops in the beer and the brewing process and the guy didn't know so he went to try to find Joe Short who unfortunately was unavailable :(
They have way too many beers!!! ( or I don't have enough money)
I only dropped by to pick up a few beers and head back home, I was too tired to throw back a few and relax after having been on the road for 6 hours driving ( I probably would have passed out on my barstool), so I didn't get the full effect, just a 15-20 minute session of talking and moseying around the bar checking out the artwork and general atmosphere. I will definitely go back again though for the full experience, this place is great, smack in the middle of nowhere right by Traverse City, my favorite MI travel destination.

Reviewed on my second visit and this one was even better than my first. Located in an ols hardware store in what is downtown Bellaire, this place has a great do it yourself feel and that is for a good reason. They had 9 beers on tap, a few less than last time, but the ones I tried, noble chaos and village reserve were very good. The bartender introduced herself by her name, Megan, and seemed genuinely interested in making the visit fun. The menu consists of soups, sandwiches, and pizzas, all moderately priced but very good. The feature 20 oz pints for 4$, 10 oz for 2$, 32 oz for 7$ and snifters 11.75 oz of the bigger stuff for 6$. I will make this a stop everytime I am within 50 miles of the place.
