Dulcie and Aylwin's Big Beer Adventure Volume V targeted Shorts as our northernmost destination in Michigan. Have had the Huma Lupa prior and many have spoken highly; so the visit was one of those high-anticipation things.
The long and the Short, so to speak, disappointed. To be clear, and perhaps this is what really matters, the disappointment lay not in the beer, which is good, but in everything else, which was not. It's one of those things where you wonder what the place is trying to be: a real beer place or a ChuckeCheese catering to vacationing families.
When we arrived the bedlam was awful with kids and brats everywhere. We persevered and endured the rather annoying tradition of ordering everything at the bar. So there is a huge line for everyone except the lucky few who have seats at the bar - hotly contested.
I will commend the beer selection; besides the Huma Lupa that needs no introduction, there was a broad selection of variously-hopped pales of different hue, along with an impressive Bourbon Barrel Sustenance black lager. Some may enjoy the various essays in fruit, but we avoided those like the plague. Dulcie's fav was Stellar. No, not Artois.
Food very disappointing; the kitchen must be something like a fridge and a microwave. Anyone who makes a claim that this is good is violently misled.
I would like to return, out of season, to capture it in a more tranquil mode, where perhaps the true colors can be shown.

I really had a blast in Michigan this past weekend. We were only staying in Bellaire for one night so I made the best of it. I tried every single beer they had on tap (got to love flights!). I enjoyed pretty much all of them.
The atmosphere is great, very relaxed lots of seating room. The staff were great, it got pretty busy at times but they managed just fine.
I ended up buying a couple growlers and six packs to take home as well as some t shirts.
If you happen to be anywhere near Shorts I would highly recommend dropping in.

Bellaire, MI is kind of the middle of nowhere, but Short's Brewing is well worth the trip!
The selection of brews is great. I especially liked that their brews were unique, and ran the spectrum. (I find that craft brewers tend toward the porter and stout end of the spectrum when they make really unique beers.)
I also liked the fact that their menu had food for all ages, which means you can bring the wife and kids with you if you're on vacation (like we were.)
It would have been nice to get table service for our food, but the bartenders were knowledgeable and friendly, so ordering everything at the bar wasn't that bad.

Drove up to Bellaire to kick off a 3-brewery crawl in the Traverse City area with family. Shorts is essentially the only place in town that I observed worth going to. Located in an old building with beautiful wood storefront and eye-catching sign.
We were the first to arrive that day as we got there a few minutes before opening. The bartender let us relax inside until they opened, on the custom made Cadillac couches. The interior is very nice with hardwood floors and vaulted ceilings with brick walls and local artwork lining much of the interior.
Flights of 5 came in around $8 with 20 offerings on tap, the annuals plus several more. My flight consisted of their Village Reserve, Pandemonium Pale Ale, Bellaire Brown, the Magician, and their Anniversary Ale. The best however was their Woodsmaster brew - this beer was exceptional with hints of maple, pecan and toffee. I've had several Pecan beers and this one takes the cake. The Bourbon Barrel Sustenance wasn't bad either. There's few times when ordering flights there isn't one beer that I like and Shorts did that exactly. All the beers were expertly made and outstanding.
I only rated a 4.0 for food as the only food consumed was an appetizer of spreads. All were decent and affordable. Had we tried more things I have no doubt the score would be higher.
Shorts easily makes the best beer in Michigan. The depth of styles and quality is unmatched and I only look forward to what's next from Bellaire.

My husband and I went to Short's for the second time recently and it was wonderful. We sampled all the beers - Soft Parade and Huma Lupa were the tops but they also had some interesting mixes in their Pistachio Cream and Key Lime Pie (a bit too sweet). The food was delicious and service great - we loved the honey mustard sauce and our server brought us some to take home with no charge. We were there in the early afternoon for lunch, so the atmosphere was fairly quiet but I imagine it's a bit louder/exciting when a band is performing.
Overall, the beer was great, the service was great and the food was great which makes this one of my favorite breweries in the state.

This place is great, try to make it up a few times a year. The pub is inside an old hardwear store, brick walls and creeky old wood floors give it a good feeling. Small inside till you notice the other side with a stage and ample seating. Everything is served from the bar so don't wait around at a table and hope to get a beer. Even with everyone being served from the baeer the line never takes to long. They always have a large list of beers on tap, alot of thier many stays with just enough specialties to keep it interesting. The food is great, it is a big reasons that I I keep coming back out to the pub now that I can get most of thier beers in bottles around home.

Visited Short's on our whirlwind beer tour, April 23rd, 2009 so I'm more than a little bit behind on posting this review.
The atmosphere of the pub is awesome. They've done a great job with this old building and it's very inviting. The first thing you notice is the 16 foot high ceilings and all of the excellent woodwork (done by Joe, himself). The floor, bar and tabletops are all hand made and the quality shows through. The decor is fairly eclectic and it's a perfect fit for the pub.
Quality is top notch....in the beer, in the food, in the service and in the building itself. I was not disappointed in anything and we hung out there for about 4 hours. This year, I'd love to spend and entire day at Short's but we'll have to see how the trip planning goes.
Service was great, too. We had a couple of different bartenders and they were both very attentive. Of course, the place wasn't even 1/4 full so we had that going in our favor.
Selection was top notch. There were numerous taps available and most of the entire Imperial Series as well as a couple of Anniversary series beers...and I took a little of everything!
Food was very good, too and the menu selection was varied.
Pricing was about what you would expect from this type of establishment.
All in all, this was a most excellent place to start our beer tour and we fully intend to get back here again, even if it is a 7 hour drive.

Food --- Good selection, high quality.
Service --- Very good. We had a complaint and it was dealt with in a thorough, accommodating fashion. They are clearly serious about serving their customers well.
Beer --- Outstanding selection --- 16 beers on tap. We (by which I mean I) had two flights of samplers: 10 beers.
Ambiance --- Coming to this rather young urban professional place directly from the laid-back, rural UP resulted in quite the culture shock. However, the place is family-friendly: there were young kids running around constantly, and no one said a word. (This is a plus in my book.) Also: bars with sofas and coffee tables are a plus. The folding chairs, on the other hand, were not as comfortable.
We enjoyed the live music, and the staff that I spoke to were more than friendly. However, the atmosphere (i.e, my fellow customers) is not really my speed.

Short's pub is comprised of a room with the bar and a few small tables next to a larger room with larger tables and a stage for live music. There was a pretty wide age distribution, and pretty crowded on a Saturday night.
They have a wide variety of rotating beers on tap and their Imperial series available in 750 mL bottles to go. I was there just in time to try the 2009 Anniversary Ale.
The menu was comprised of sandwiches and pizza. Food and beer was all very reasonably priced and everything was ordered at the bar.
Definitely worth visiting if you happen to be in northern Michigan.

We drove off our route to eat and have some of the beers at this brewpub. We were very pleased with out decision. The food and beer was excellent. The atmosphere was very welcoming, rustic, and original. We had the sampler of beers and really enjoyed The Magician brew. The place had a number of families, which I found quite odd at first. I guess I'm not used to seeing the local brewery as the place to bring the kids out for food. However, there seemed to be a lot of out of town people on vacation eating and drinking at this place. Even with the family friendly atmosphere, I very much enjoyed the place and would definitely recommend traveling to the little town to have some beers and a bit to eat.
