A - Pours an impenetrable black with a finger and a half of mocha head. Left no lacing.

S - Dark roasted malts and coffee, followed by a small amouunt of citrus and pineapple.

T - Moderates between roasted and toasted malts along with mango and pineapple. Throws some banana into the mix as well.

M - Medium bodied with medium carbonation.

O - Overall, It was definitely good, although it was far more like a stout than an IPA. Needs more balance.

12oz bottle poured into Perennial tulip - thanks to erikkoppin

Deep blacked-out pour with a thick, frothy tanned head. Rings of webbed lacing coat the glass while drinking.

Fairly heavy pine hop bitterness in the nose with resin and softer, sweeter notes. Touches of coffee beans and chocolate with roasted dark malts and alcohol warmth.

Bitter and piny right up front with sticky resinous hops. The hop profile builds like a wave, riding on top of the multi-layered malt backbone. Coffee beans, dark chocolate and sweetness mellow out the aggressive hoppiness. Roasty and warm in the finish with lingering bitterness.

Fuller medium body, decent carbonation, creamy and full on the tongue. Black IPAs are hit or miss for me sometimes but this was really delicious, especially with the soft, pillowy mouthfeel and high-torque hop profiles.

Pours a dark brown... basically black with a medium tan head that goes down quickly. Scent is that of a roasty porter or coffee stout. A ton of roasted malt and some dark malt with roasted hop aromas. Very interesting beer here. This has some hoppy notes, but drinks like a well-crafted, roasty porter. The hops are just a plus. Taste is just as it smell. Roasted malt and hops with some chocolate and coffee. Espresso with coffee grounds and hops. This beer is fantastic! One of the best "black ipas" and one of the best "american black ales" I've ever had. Mouthfeel is full and creamy. Drinkability is high.

I bought this bad boy about two months ago, tired the first 5 fairly fast going to finally give it a proper rating.

Very deep powerful chocolate and roasty aroma. finger of head when poured vigorously. choppy lacing. looks vigorous when poured. Pitch black not unlike the night's sky. noticeable relatively rapid carbonation bubbles rising.

hoppy but nothing too intense upfront. A bit of a bitter finish but I think this one might have done a bit more tongue bruising back a month ago. Very thick and lowish carbonation. Robust but not overwhelming. Alcohol in the finish but hidden everywhere else. chewy texture.

Overall: A very very solid beer. I would say a close second among Black IPA (just trailing Stone's 15th anniversary). I would recommend drinking one at a time, not only for the ABV but also just to spread the wealth.

Awesome caramel colored lasting foamy head on thick black fluid. Missing much lacing.

Burnt, pine, grass, roasty, caramel, very stout ;)

Chewy, deep, smooth, delicous, super roasty without the burden of smoke. Creamy, heavy carbonation, high dry bitting bitterness, lots of heavy dark chocolate. Resinous, piney, green, dank burn.

Highly Recommended!!! Drinks a lot like a RIS... Thanks, Adam.

A: Pours pitch black with mocha head heavy lacing at the edges and a good dusting on top.

S: Aroma of citrus and ash. Some orange rind and pine. Pure bitterness with dark deep roasted malt scents.

T: Bitter orange peel, deep woods pine and charcoal. Deep bitter black patent malt battle with citrus hops. Goodnight bodacious has a Bitter finish that was hard won by the hops. Flavorful is an understatement and this is tasty but definitely would be tough to have more than one of these for me. Ideally I would have had half a bottle and I like DIPAs. Lots of licorice / anice flavor in here as well.

M: Medium to thick body for a ABA, medium carbonation.

O: Overall this is a tasty American black ale. It is too much for me right now however. Maybe its spring however I am just not a fan of this right now. As fate would have it, I dumped 3/4 of this beer on my rug. Oops. Maybe it was predetermined as I wasnt particularly interested....

When Shorts says 'Double Black', they ain't lying. Jet black x 1000 is the color of this brew. A loose khaki head stays put at 1.5". It does settle to 1" after several minutes, leaving a coagulated barrage of large bubbled lace in its wake. Still, menacing, and daunting. Absolute killer wide ringed shattered lace all rather way down the glass.

I was forced to stir up this wicked head as to give it a fair chance of a smell rating. After said swirling of my nonic pint glass, dark chocolate brownies come to the forefront. A few more gentle swirls gives eminence to resinous, scorched hops, that bring to mind a charred pine forest. Not that I ever smelled, (or for that matter, want to) a burnt-up Christmas tree, but I have sometimes imagined it after dozens of times watching Christmas Vacation. Boozy.

The acrid dark roasted malts chant impending domination on my palate with every measured quaff. Rich, yet pointed - thanks to enough hop bite to climb itself out of the roasted malty quicksand. This is a battle between Bass and Treble. The Bass is boomin', but the hi-hat is chiming away. Balsy, with a evil grin - showing sparkling white teeth.

Mouthfeel is full bodied, but very airy, thanks to a beautiful amount of ultra fine carbonation. This is what separates the pros from the wannabes, IMHO. The drinkability of this ale is outstanding, thanks to the masterful kinetic body, which actually gives the hop bill more time to shine, rather than be smothered by a wilting, lifeless body.

Overall this is one bad mofo! Not quite the palate wrecker one might fear by being a double (black) IPA. Shorts def puts their skillful hallmark on the deeep daaaarrrk malt bill on this one, but never letting you forget they're the maestros of hop manipulation either. It's kinda like looking up at the hugest, most scary roller coaster in the park. Getting strapped in. And getting the ride you expected, but you didn't die. You didn't even shit yourself. You loved it so much, you got back in line and took it for another ride. Then you gleefully dreamt about it that night, while unknowingly grew a bigger pair.

Thanks to my friend Scott for sending this to me! You send me a lot of Shorts and they are very hit or miss, but this one is a definite hit!

I'm usually not a fan of black IPA's but I'm willing to try anything once. This beer is SURPRISINGLY good. Shorts Brewing has been hit or miss IMO but this one is excellent! A nice solid fairly malty backbone to complement the flavorful hops. Not too overwhelming on either the malt or the well rounded hop profile, I would love to have more than one of these, although I would feel much better about drinking it pretty fresh (as I just did). Good choice and thanks again, my favorite black IPA to date!

Extra from a trade with tectactoe, thanks bro much appreciated. 12 oz bottle poured into HF stemware.

A: Dark brown almost black body with tan 1-2 finger head, moderate lacing and retention.

S: Hoppy, piney and grassy, with some roasty malt character to it.

T: Hops to the smell, with a big roasty malt backing, not too bitter though, not alcohol presence.

M: Medium carbonation, medium body, wetter than most DIPAs, decent.

O: A solid offering from a small brewery, if available locally I would enjoy this if well-priced. Nothing to go crazy over, but a well-balanced brew. Glad to have tried.
