12 oz bottle was poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a minimal head that reduced to a thin layer. It is a copper brown color with good clarity and slow moving bubbles coming up through the glass. Spotty lacing on the glass ad the beer was drank.

Smell: Piney and resiny hops, caramel and toffee malt aromas, and some roasted aromas too.

Taste: Hops are there, caramel and roasted hops, with some mild bitterness in the end, and a little hazelnut too.

Mouthfeel: Smooth, light to medium bodied, medium carbonation, slightly tingly bitterness, and a little creamy.

Overall: A nice ABA from a brewery that comes to Boston a few months of the year. Yeah, I'm happy with this one too.

Tasted On: 04-20-2013

Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Wellington
Purchased: Received in a trade

A: Pours a clear and dark brown-reddish beer, with a small off-white head that diminishes quickly. Lacing is minimal.

S: Aromas have caramel malt sweetness as well as earthy and citrus hops; simple but very pleasant.

T: The taste has an initial impression of hop spiciness and then notes of bready malts. The bitterness is moderate and seems just right. The ABV gives a nice touch of alcohol warmth.

M: Body is medium, with an average amount of carbonation. The finish has the sweetness of the malts balanced expertly with the earthy hops.

O: Overall a simple but very satisfying beer; one that I wish I had more of, which is a sign of a great brew!

Thanks to DrewShal9 for the trade!

12 ounce bottle
Served in a nonic pint glass

A - This brew is copper colored with amber highlights. A couple inches of tan head top this beer.

S - At first I noticed milk chocolate and cocoa. Then as I drank it some grassy hops came through.

T - The taste was a similar journey as the aroma. Initially my tastebuds were met with milk chocolate. After I drank a third of the glass some hops started creeping. The finish became slightly bitter and citrusy with the chocolate malt still coming through.

M - It is relatively smooth with the carbonation only pricking the tip of my tongue.

O - This is an interesting beer. I had recalled earlier tastes of this beer having a pronounced hop component. When I first tasted this particular Good Humans I got a ton of chocolate and hop significant hops. As I mentioned earlier, once I finished a third of the beer the hops made their presence known. This is one on the more enjoyable beers that I have had from Shorts.

My dad brought this one back from a recent trip to Michigan. Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into my Cigar City pint glass.

A - Pours a nice burnt sienna color, with some deep red tones like a cranberry juice. A small half-finger of fluff appears after the pour. A small amount of visible carbonation at the bottom of the brew. A wall of lacing develops as I drink.

S - The first thing on the nose is a big hop aroma, with some bitter, resiny pine playing a role. Also a bit of an earthy or herbal character. After that, the brown ales roasted malts take the steering wheel, with only a hint of sweetness apparent.

T - Nutty and toasty at the beginning, which transitions into some light coffee roast flavors. There's a bit of sweetness here too, such as a light brown sugar. Finishes with some bitter hops and a roasted note that lingers.

M - A little thin for a brown ale, but with an adequate carbonation level. Dries the mouth out a little too much.

O - An interesting variation on a brown ale, but not necessarily something that I would go out of my way to seek again.

Pours a small fizzy head covering that barely exists before disappearing, not too bad for an 8% beer but not great either, slightly hazy dark mahogany slightly chocolate brown color with some ruby light coming through.

Nose is interesting, a blend of brown malts and floral hops. Hops bring some floral, slightly noble like grassy aromas, touch of pine and earthy hops, and a decent malt base, light toasty brown malts, little caramel and hint syrupy, little nutty toffee too.

Taste brings a juicy brown malt right out first, plenty of toffee, nutty, caramel, hint buttery toffee, nice malty base with mild sweetness but mostly dry, almost candy like toffee nutty flavors almost brittle but without the sweetness. Then hops, milder hops, just a touch of bitterness, mostly grassy floral almost noble like hops, just a touch of earthy and faint piney hops. Finish gets bit more bitter, spicy earthy hops lingering, grassy hops as well, semi dry but a little sticky and some buttery toffee and nutty brown malts lingering.

Mouth is med bodied, nice fluffy carb, booze is hidden well.

Overall not bad, I'm surprised by this one. The Short's normal beers don't seem to do anything special and are usually fairly lackluster. And I wasn't expecting a dry hopped brown ale to do anything nice, but this is well balanced, not too bitter, nice profile of both hops and malts that seem to somehow play off each other, since I think they picked the hops and malts well.

no bottle date

A - poured out a small half finger white head that dissipated fast with a dark brown/amberish body that you can not see all the way through. Has a layer of yeast in the bottom so watch out if you do not like the yeast.

S - The smell is rather malty with a bit of roasted quality, along with woody and vanilla notes. Smells sweet and smooth. Can not detect alcohol on this one.

T - The taste is strong with alcohol. Slight roast quality and smooth with some earthy hops. Not a lot redeeming with the taste, it seems the last time I had this I liked it.

M - This is a nice smooth with a full mouth feel. Kinda oily in the mouth.

O - This beer is hot and boozy in my opinion. I usually feel brown ales are easy drinking and smooth as this one seems to be but its just slightly on the boozy side. Not one to gravitate to, but one I liked at one point. For some reason this bottle is not doing it for me. Better luck next time cheers!

12oz bottle. Deep amber with a frothy light mocha head. This retains with a creamy richness, leaving sticky swathes of lacing behind. The aroma smells leafy with green citrus, cocoa and roast all mixing together to give the nose a fresh ripe twang. The taste is fresh ripe citrus with a firm bitterness at its core. Tropical and herbal notes hang on the edges while a malty backbone of cocoa sweetness and roast flavor that leave a touch of char lingering in the finish along with some leftover green bitterness. The mouthfeel is medium with a firm creaminess that spreads out. This is pretty easy going in the mouth overall with just a touch of warmth to the proceedings. This was a more than serviceable take on the hoppy Brown Ale style with a good bit more going on with it than I expected. The really easy drinkability for 8% helped as well. Glad I picked a bottle up.

Nice to see a few new Short's beers hitting the area again around EBF time.

A- 12oz bottled poured into an oversized snifter with a dark brown body. Light tan head forms to about one finger in height and has a bubbly, frothy texture. A ring stays around the top of the beer with big, creamy bubbles. Lace is impressive relative to the small ring present around the beer, thin but plentiful rings.

S- Big brown ale elements and a good hop presence. Roast nuts, hazelnut, toffee, brown sugar, leather, dark fruits and roast malts (some cocoa) make for a good backbone. The hops lend some citrus peel and pine hints.

T- Opens up with toasted nut, cocoa, leather and caramelized sugar notes. Other flavors include raisin, dark fruits, yeast bread, hazelnut sticks out and then there are the hops. The hops are strong for a Brown Ale but still balanced enough not to affect the good malt and yeast flavors. Hop profile to me is mostly citrus juice with some floral and grassy hints. Somewhat buttery but pleasantly so. With time I get a distinct cherry jam, raspberry feel coming to mind for what I just listed as dark fruits, not sure where it comes from, maybe just the overall combo of flavors.

MF- Moderately high carbonation in a body that lends a bit of a silky feel. The overall consistency is just a bit thin/watery to me but just a little. Fairly bitter finish for a Brown Ale.

The mix of hops and brown ale malts works for me but the malt flavors actually are my favorite part of this beer. A good hazel-nutty, leathery and caramel cocoa feel to them, good stuff.

First shorts brew, got as an extra in a trade.

A- pours reddish brown wish a small white head
S-malty, brown sugar, some cinnimon, smoke, nut, slight vanilla, fresh hops
T/M- starts very smokey, some bbq flavors, slightly sweet, some licorice, some dark fruit, all of which is accompanied with a refreshing hoppy bite. Thickness as expected for a brown ale.
O- I love unique beers and this didn't disappoint. I don't really like brown ales but I dig anything that highlights hops. This is a beer that is great to try but I can't see buying a 6 pack. Great beer, very unique, enjoyable. Thanks shorts

Pours like dark root beer with an off-white, bubbly 1/4 inch head that dissipates into slight lacing.

An aroma of dark fruits hits hard at the front. Faint smells of piney, citrusy hops. Anise. Musty and yeasty.

Earthy, smoky malt flavor emerges first, with hints of cookie dough. Brown sugar is in there. This is all balanced with the second half of the sip; a drying, musty hop flavor paired with yeasty fermentation derivatives. Goes down with a bubbly, pointed carbonation.

Mouthfeel is rich and slick. A sweet beginning washed away with the drying hops. Residual warming alcohol and molasses linger.

This is a dry hopped double brown ale, which to me means "a lot of different things in one bottle." It's complex and enjoyable, but it's hard to get a grip on everything going on in each sip; maybe that's a good thing…. Well done, Short's.

Appearance: Lookin' good. No lacing or head, but a nice, tiny bubbled foam on top of the beer. The beer is crystal clear, and a deep ruby color. Really probably the highlight for this.

Smell: Smoke, chocolate, malt. I get a burst of hops in the aroma as well if I swish the glass around a little bit and then take a whiff.

Taste/feel: Thankfully the taste is quite a bit better... and unique as well. Front of the tongue is malt, middle is chocolatey, and then the finish is some more malt with actually a very unusual but welcome hop presence, as well as a smokey/roasty aftertaste. Can't say I've ever had a brown ale with such notable hops in it, but I like it a lot. The beer is never too bitter or too sweet, thanks to the fabulous balance. Have you ever had a beer that's had a blend of hops and chocolate? I haven't, but it's something that actually manages to work here.

A unique as hell brown ale ... really tastes like it was blended with an IPA, and it has a flavor I'm not sure I'll find in another brown ale. Good Humans has an aroma that I'd like to forget (I'm not sure why I'm smelling what I am)... but at least the taste and mouthfeel shine. The beer has got an unusual name and label, but it has a flavor that any beer geek ought to try. Unique. That's what best describes Good Humans.

This beer has grown on me since last years seasonal release. I enjoy a good hoppy brown ale and this beer has become a favorite this season. Pleasant sweet hoppy aroma and great color and a smooth finish.

Very smooth for 8% with lots of flavor and very drinkable.

No bottled on or best by date on the bottle, unfortunately, so I have no way of knowing how fresh this is (or is not, for that matter).

The beer pours a light, ruddy, malty amber-tan with some foam that quickly dissipates. Its more caramel colored than amber, and doesn’t appear to be your typical amber ale from the get go.

As promised, this is definitely a hoppy amber—the aroma is malty sweet with some caramel notes but they’re secondary to the dry grassy-straw hop note on top.

This beer has a slight bitterness upfront with a light touch of the straw and grassy hop notes but it’s balanced by a gentle malty sweetness along with a hint of maple. It’s an interesting beer that stakes out a different style and makes it work in the process. A great winter seasonal sipper, regardless of when its available.

Pout a nice 2 finger head. I love the rich amber dark brown clear color. Some lacing and the head settled to a thin ring.

I got more hop and citrus than I expected from the smell.

This one really is growing on me. For a brown it has more hops than expected with the ibu only at 19 you really get hop flavors but not the bitterness. I get caramel and toffee flavor and a mix of the floral and citrus of the hops. I like the lingering aftertaste .

The sweetness is balanced with a clean fresh feel. You do get some lingering stickiness but it's not cloying.

This is more complex than other browns and I liked it better the second time I had it. I the changes as it warms and it was easy to finish. I would look for this one again.

Pours a super deep amber and brown color, with a light-tan / off-white head leaving respectable amounts of lacing on the glass. Aroma is a heavy, heavy canvas of chocolate wheat, rich caramel, and burnt brown sugar with huge splashes of floral hops and pines. The brew has a strong nutty flavor, backed with cocoa beans, toffee, and hazelnut, intertwined with a crusade of roses, trees, and floral hops that float in and out. The malt and wheat flavors are the strongest up front, midway through, they give way to the heavy floral hop flavor, with a nice bitterness spike as it begins to fade out. The creamy, malt flavors are present all the way through - full of nuttiness, caramel, and sweet sugar. Medium body and a pretty average amount of carbonation.

Strange brew, as are many coming off of Shorts' line, but this one hits the mark pretty well. Is it an IPA? Is it a brown ale? Why can't it be both? I didn't know how a double-brown dry hopped beer would be, but the caramel flavors from the malt mix and the jungle flavors from the hops play nicely together.

So the beer was poured from a bottle into a snifter. It is a deep copper/brown, with some amber and mahogany highlights. It has a strong off-white head that quickly dissipates but leaves a lace on the side of the glass.

The aroma starts with an enormous toffee, graham cracker, and chocolate blast with some low to medium hop aroma. There is lots of dark fruit, like overripe strawberries and plums. The toffee aroma grows as the sample warms. There is a very small, but perceptible, coffee aroma as it opens up.

The beer is big and bold and malty at the sip, but it gives way quickly to a bitterness that is, I expect, intended to counter the malty sweetness. It has a substantial hop flavor. In fact, it ends up not balancing all that well. It finishes malty but with a touch of hops, and not a small amount of warmth at the swallow. The finish is pleasingly dry and leads to a lingering hoppy but very malty finish.

It's rich and creamy, but light. A touch fluffy, but the alcohol does more than warms. It is a little hot.

This is a big but very drinkable beer I loved it, but there were a few issues that kept it from greatness.

A- pours a dark brown with a 2 finger light tan head. Nice curtain and spotting of lacing on the glass.

S- light roast, hazelnuts and some pine

Bottle date of 1/9/12 poured in to Founders tulip.

A - Slightly hazy medium amber colour with plenty of orange glow around the edges. One finger of cream coloured head.

S - Big nutty aroma up front with a hint of chocolate and some caramel. Some bitterness is apparent but only a faint floral hop aroma is present.

T - A huge bitterness up front with some floral and grassy flavours. The brown ale characteristics take the back seat here but are still very present, providing roasted nut, caramel and bready flavours. An interesting beer but something is just off and not coming together for me here.

M - Medium body with moderate carbonation.

2012:
Bottle got from Keweenaw Co-op, pretty nifty store in Hancock MI.

Very cloudy dark copper colored beer. Not much but bits if off white lacy head

Lots of maltyness and caramel, but there is also a lot of sweetness.
Caramel and floral hops.

Pretty sweet flavored beer, Upfront very bready and caramely but then the finish is bitty and has floral hop qualities.

Medium to full bodied, moderately low carbonation but it works really well with the beer.

It grew on me while I was drinking it, it was overall very good.

2013:
Head died very quick. beer not as cloudy as noted last year. Many of the normal brown flavors just amped up.

Overall: decrease appearance and mouthfeel and increased taste and overall

This beer pours a lighter bodied dark amber in color with a slight off white lacing. It smells of slightly smoked malts and raisins. It's definitely on the malty side. The flavors are dry and hoppy with a nice malt backbone. I'm glad the hops are present here since they were absent in the nose. The flavor builds with time as well. It drinks light in body with a nice after taste. Overall this is a solid brown. I'm glad I could try it.

A: Dark Nut brown beer body. Nice two finger coffee colored head. Nice and foamy stuck around for awhile had some nice lacing.

S: Nose is pretty strong smells nutty. Like a typical brown ale. You can also pick up on some carmel maltiness in those pretty strong nose.

T: Flavor is very good. Smooth caramel, nuts, and nice hop finish.

M: Mouthfeel is thin. Which I kind of expected given the style. Nice carbonation.

A - A very dark brown but clear at the base. Head is tan in color and I got at least an inch of foamy goodness.

S - Smell doesn't give way to much dry hopping which is a good thing since these guys can sometimes take hoping to far. Mostly sweet with caramel and toffee with only slight floral hops. Smells balanced.

T - Well it doesn't have much roasty nutty flavors but mostly sweet malts and citrus/pineapple hops in the finish. I do like how balanced it is starting sweet and finishing mildly hoppy.

M - Medium body the ABV is hidden very well in this.

Overall nothing really bad to say about this except maybe could use more roasty or nutty flavors. Kind of drinks more like a mildly hoppy amber ale if you ask me (nugget nectar like...)

Poured out a nice dark carmel color. Pretty typical for Browns. Loved the Dry Hoppped flavors. Good cure for boring browns. The smells doesn't give you a whole lot but it does have a good carmel smell with just a bit of flower in there from the Hops. Very sweet smell. Probably one of the best tasting beers I've ever had. Didn't expect it given the smell. Very smooth given the high alcohol content.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled 11/29/2011. Pours clear dark red-brown color with a nice 1-2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Some spotty lacing on the glass. Aromas of big herbal/spicy hops, caramel, bread, toasted malt, citrus, and a bit of pine. Some very hoppy aromas here as I was anticipating. Taste of caramel, chocolate, biscuit, citrus, herbal, roasted nut, toasted malt, and light pine. Fair amount of spicy bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, biscuit, chocolate, toasted malts, and herbal/spicy hops for a bit. Was hoping for more malt balance over the hop flavor; but there was a decent balance. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a creamy and slightly oily mouthfeel. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming after the finish. Overall this is an enjoyable and certainly interesting brown ale. Nicely drinkable for 8%, and has a unique flavor profile.
