American IPA |  6.90% ABV

Availability: Year-round. bottle (495), on-tap (73), growler (6)

Notes:
Named after the hop flower Humulus Lupulus, this India Pale Ale style beer has enormous amounts of hop bitterness, flavor and aroma. With a very complex malt bill, flavors seem to meld with the hops to balance this ale and provide a ridiculous urge to sample more.

12oz bottle from Beer Baron (Detroit, MI).  2.49. Bottled 5/09/12. Served in a Cigar City snifter.

Pours clear orange amber with a half finger chalky head. Little lace.

Smells of grapefruit, pine and biscuity malts.

Taste mixes bittersweet grapefruit, rind, sweet bread and spice.

Medium light feel, mild carbonation. Long dry bitter aftertaste.

Above average but nothing stands out.

Pours bronze/amber and cloudy. Small white head that dissipates quickly. Lacing is minimal.

Smells of hops, slight smell of malt. Piney, not so much citrus, but a typical IPA smell.

Tastes slightly more bitter than most IPA's, but the balace is just about right. Certainly a "hopmonster". Slight taste of malts and sweet citrus flavor, but more bitter than anything. The flavor was bold and complex.

Finishes pretty dry, but it drinks easy.

This is a bitter IPA that is just above average imo.

Golden pour, little foam, decent lacing. Smells just like hopslam, what I would expect from a hop heavy beer like this. Taste was in a way similar to hopslam, though less balanced, though more bitter despite feeling as if it wasn't anymore hop heavy. Bitter aftertaste. Enjoyable though, as it is $5 cheaper than hopslam in my area. Don't have too much more to say about this beer other than its a solid, yet bitter, hop monster of a beer.

a bottle-conditioned version from the brewery courtesy of camil1mj & tjohn2401... thanks guys!

chilled quickly out of the box and poured into a pint glass. pours a cloudy marigold with a little head that sticks around for a while. it almost looks like a wheat beer, but the aroma is all ipa - sweet floral hops with a bit of muted pine and a surprising wallop of wheat-y malt. the flavor is heavy on the malts - it's thick and sweet on the front end, with the bitterness of the hops coming in at the end. this is a surprising ipa in the same way that i'm surprised by gumballhead (or as the other side of a similar coin). it's an ipa that is thick and wheat-y with a good backbone of hops. confusing, but it works.

12oz bottle served in a pint glass.

pours a clear medium amber tone while yielding a finger, finger and a half of foamy off-white head. decent retention and lacing all over the place. pretty much nails what my expectations are for the appearance of an IPA. fairly aromatic nose offers citric hops in abundance. secondary notes of pine and some florally characters with the hint of a sweet, malty backbone present in the background.

taste delivers on the nose, maybe even exceeds it. the citrus headlines the show with the pine and floral hoppiness and some biscuit-y malt rounding out the supporting cast. fairly bitter. medium bodied mouthfeel with average carbonation.

overall, i'm digging this IPA a lot. very tasty. while i wouldn't necessarily throw it in with the best of the best, i could see it earning a spot in my regular rotation... if only short's distributed to the boston area.

No enjoy by date on the bottle.
Slow pour into a standard pint glass.

A: It poured to a quarter-finger head that was light tan and disapated pretty quickly. The brew is a light copper clolor with an orange hue.

S: The aroma is very strong and robust. It consists of a strong pine with some citrus and a bit of malt sweetness.

T: It has a very robust and focused earthy hops bitterness. The malt does not come through very much, but there is just enough of it there to knock off the sharp edge of the bitterness. It is not very complex - just simple, straight forward, no nonsense bitterness.

M: This is a medium bodied beer with a clean finish.

0: An outstanding IPA. It has a great hops bitterness focus and does not try to balance with malt. The malts only job is to take off the really sharp edge of the bitterness. The alcohol is also very well hidden. (So be carefull.) A true all hops biterness, all the way though IPA. A hop heads' delight.

A - Minimal head, about 1/4 finger. Maybe slightly off-white in the yellow. Body is a great slightly cloudy, perfectly balanced wheat colored.

S - Smells like a good IPA. Nothing crazy, but solid. Hops, grapefruit, and orange. Smooth and simple.

T - Again, nothing crazy but good. Hops are moderately harsh and then some orange rind and slight sourness.

M - Decent carbonation and body. Slightly drying.

O - Simple and good. Could see drinking a lot of this on a regular basis if it was cheap and available.

Poured into a Parkbrau Pils glass on 6/13/12

Many thanks to beesy for sharing this and several beers he acquired from Michigan.

This is a cloudy beer, which casts a deep appearance through the golden orange colored beer. An aggressive pour resulted in but a finger's worth of foam. Patchy, soapy retention and lace.

Ripe notes of lemon and orange peel take hold of the aroma, backed by piney hops and oily notions. A faint herbal presence seems a bit at odds with the lemon. Tangerine juiciness as the beer opens up. Clean cracker and a hint of sugar cookie make up the malt side of things.

The flavor is titled toward piney hop crackle, at least up front. Some zesty citric tidings are in there, too. The middle finds modest sweet biscuit and a hint of dusty yeast way in the back. The finish turns very dry and bitter; it's like grapefruit bitterness, without grapefruit flavor.

The feel is in medium territory with ample, pointed carbonation that accents the snappiness of the hops. There is a resinous feel, too. Lingering residuals are fairly brief.

Overall impression: Aside from whatever that herbal twinge is, I rather like this one. I picked up a six pack several years ago, but I don't remember much about it. I'm happy to have a chance to give it a proper shake.

Received from trade with Eric, thanks!

Medium amber with nice foaming tinged head and a bit of lacing.

Nose is full of big perfume-y hops and some malt. Not really citrus, more flowery to me. With pine and sweetness.

After the first sip, the balance of this beer really shines. The sweetness is there and the raw resinous hop bitterness joins. Finishes dry.

The mouthfeel is average, medium to thin. I would have like a little more chewiness to this, its rather dry and crisp bitter.

I'd like to try this on tap if it's available, but I can't get it around me. Above average IPA, but there are ones I'd choose over this. (but not many)

Thanks Eric for the hookup

Pours a dark amber with a quarter inch of a loose white head. There is almost no lacing, haze, or sediment. The nose is slightly hoppy with a lot of malty sweetness. The hops aren't particularly citrusy, more resiny and earthy. The beer drinks with major sweetness upfront followed by a dry residual bitterness. I like the sweetness, but they could have done a lot more with their hops. Once the beer warms the sweetness becomes more pronounced & helps to balance out the beer's intense bitterness.
I would probably pass on trying this beer in the future.

Received from Tony412

A- Pours a nice, murky golden yellow into my DFH glass. A one finger bright white head that fades rather quickly and leaves a decent amount of lacing dripping down the glass.

S- Pineapple, sweet caramel malts, orange zest and honey are the first things I pick up. Some zesty notes of pine and sweet candied lemon peel come in after, along with some subtle notes of fermenting compost from the yeast.

T- Bitter orange zest, pineapple, pine sap, some sweet malts creep in along with some candied lemon and hints of yellow grapefruit. The yeast shines thru just enough.

M- A decent blend of bitter and sweet. The hoppy/piney bitterness hangs on and dominates though. The sweetness of the malt fades at first but comes back on the finish. Not as carbonated as some IPA's.

O- A really nice IPA! Very well balanced between citrus/pine/sugar and yeast. I wish I could get this near me in NY. Probably the best brew I've had from Short's so far. Easy to drink on a warm east coast spring day. Thank you Tony!

A: pours a slightly hazy honey color with a finger of off-white head that fades into a thin ring with no lacing.

S: loads of pineapple on the nose with notes of caramel malt, grapefruit, and orange. Nice.

T: unfortunately the flavor does not match the aroma. Bitter grapefruit rind and pine dominate with a dry finish that is overly bitter.

M: medium body and carbonation, this beer could use a bit more carbonation.

O: unfortunately this beer does not taste as good as it smells. Still, it's an alright IPA.

I could smell the hops eminating from this guy as soon as I cracked the bottle cap. Beautiful golden pour with a slight bit of haze. Sweet up front with a strong floral scent and flavor that almost immediately gives way to a fairly intense bitterness, which lingers on the palette for a bit before subsiding back to the sweet. Just the right amount of carbonatino, but in the end, the bitterness of the hops is a bit much for my tastes.

Bottle that I picked up while in Michigan for KBS day. Poured into my GI tulip

A - Light amber with hints of gold. The beer is clean looking and you can actually see your hand on the other side of the glass. An aggressive pour led to a big, pillowing, two finger head that quickly disappeared into a small amount of foam that sat on top of the beer. The body appears to be a bit thin.

S - Barely smell anything on this one. What I do smell smells like grapefruit and piney hops. However, really barely any nose at all here.

T - Well, this has much more flavor that you could tell from the nose. When you first take a sip, you get grapefruit. In the middle of the beer is where the more bitter, piney hops come in. There is a slight malt sweetness that helps counterbalance the hops and prevents it from being overly bitter. The finish initially is slightly sweet and crisp before piney, bitter resin flavors come in and linger on in the finish.

MF - Light body overall but has just enough carbonation to make this crisp and refreshing. The lighter body actually goes well with the flavors and makes this one that you could drink over and over again.

O - A solid offering from Short's that I could imagine ending up in my normal IPA rotation if I could find it easily. This could easily become one of those beers that you have around the house and drink at BBQ's or on a hot summer day. The main area that is lacking is the nose as to be frank there wasn't one.

not as hoppy as the great american ipas are nowadays. pours a copper wheat color with an average whitish head. smells like stale bread, malty but not fresh. some nondiscript hops in there as well, but a weird balance. flavor is way too malty for an ipa in my opinion, completely drowning out any interesting hop flavors that might be present, instead just some bitterness at the end. i would feel better about calling this one an esb than an ipa, but thats just me. alcohol isnt readily tastable, but it feels stronger than it should. plenty of carbonation but just sort of awkward in the mouth and belly. i didnt care for this one and will not buy it again. im surprised this is reviewed so favorably on BA... its just so average and unbalanced

Semi-cloudy copper color. Off-white fluffy head that a nice film of bubbles sitting on top of the beer once it disappeared. Left some sticky lacing on the glass.

Resiny smell of piney and earthy hops. Light malt aroma with a hint of lemongrass. Nothing incredibly complex in the nose, but very appealing.

Some sweet bready malts, but they're almost completely masked by the hops. Bitter citrus with pine and, well, more bitterness. The bitterness lingers in the back of the mouth.

Pretty creamy with a nice sharp finish. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation.

Nice bitter IPA. Could use a tiny bit more malt to help back up the large amount of hops. Either way, a very enjoyable brew.

I need to review these whilst drinking them so I can remember all the details....

I definitely loved the bitterness-to-citrus ratio. Meaning hoppy and bitter, and spot on as an American IPA. it is very "Michigan" - maybe from the hint of pine that comes through.... made me feel nostalgic drinking it locally though. Slightly hazy in color, and a hint of sweetness in the malt with a medium head coming from the bottle, thicker head from the tap.

Taking some of this back to Ohio for my brother-in-law. He told me to get it when the lady and I were in Michigan, and boy was I glad!

Appearance : golden color brew with a two finger head that has nice retention. Pleasant lacing clings to my glass.

Smell : lots of wonderful pine resin and evergreen aroms abound on the nose. Very inviting aroms.

Taste : Big flavors here and lots of hop bitterness that lingers aroud on my tongue for a long time. The malts take a back seat to the hops in this brew.

Mouthfeel : A medium bodied brew with medium carbonation

Overall : I very much enjoyed this brew. Definitely does the style justice. Worth seeking out

A- A bright copper body with licks of green at the edges bubbles energetically under a solid finger of clean white head. Good lacing and reasonable head retention stick around the rims of the glass.

S- Lots of herbal hop flower up front with some mild citric sweetness and a bit of earthiness followed by light alcoholic tones.

T- Soft citric sweetness greets the palate and segues into a refreshingly sharp bitterness reminiscent of grapefruit or lemon rind. Bold and just barely saccharinr, a strong and earthy bitterness hangs on the tongue for quite some time, a welcome quality from such a hop bomb.

M- Just enough carbonation to carry the flavors and support the lengthy aftertaste, and even a bit of good chewiness. Right on for the style.

O- A very full-flavored and full-bodied IPA from a brewery I had previously only associated with dessert beers. Definitely recommended for hop heads who don't like their IPAs strong and not too sweet.

Thanks to GoldenChild for this. Poured into a tulip

A - pours a cloudy gold/amber with ample head. Two finger head fades to a nice frothy layer. Great lacing.

S - Citrus, grapefruit. A bit musty with a bitter note. Pretty standard for the style

T - Starts citrusy and bitter. A bit of sweetness is quickly dashed by some pine, biscuit, and earthiness. The bitter hops linger long after the taste.

M - Very nice. Coats the mouth with a creamy feel. Carbonation is a little higher than average and accentuates the earthy tones.

O - A good representation. A bit bitter on the balance, but very good. Hope to try again.

Bottle courtesy of Stephen. Thanks for the opportunity!

Into a tulip pours a cloudy yellowy with orange highlights when backlit. Retention is minimal leaving a razor thin collar.

Caramel, ginger, and lemon rind on the nose. This smells like liquified Indian food. While I happen to love indian food, the ginger and spices on the nose are slightly odd here.

Malts, bitter lemon rind and cilantro? Ginger rides hard here as well. Certainly an odd beer that conjures up vivid memories up Indian buffets gone-by.

For years my sister and wife have partaken in all the bounty and goodness that the Indian buffet has to offer. This beer is the odd incantation of these tastes and memories. Ill just drink it and ponder.

Wow, wow, wow. What an unbelievable beer! This maybe my favorite IPA ever! This is simply great, especially as its not an imperial/double IPA. It has a deeper golden shade with some red and orange tones. Slightly hazy appearance, but pretty clean and crisp. I got a 2 finger that settled to a nice lace that stayed throughout the drink. Aromas of citrus, pineapple and grapefruit mostly, but I detect some blood orange and mango to. Holy hops! I get that fresh piney and deeper grass and herb overtones that give way to subtle breads malts in the background. The first sip gives way to a sharp explosion of hops and citrus, bitterness, pine, more hops, a more refined 'aged' hop flavor (maybe just the blend of hops they use created this taste for me), a subtle bitter sweetness balanced with the hops and citrus. I get some sweet maltiness of light toasted malts near the end, but a nice aftertaste of hops comes back to end the drink. Very very nice in my humble opinion. Hop-forward, similar to some of the Stone brews, very unique though, stands by itself as one of the best IPA's on the market. Definatly one of short's best brews. An absolute legend!

Cheers!!!!

Thanks to michibrew for this beer. 12 oz. bottle poured into standard pint. Bottle dated 1/18/12.

A - Pours a slightly hazy pale copper with a bright white head that dies quickly. Leaves a leopard lacing on the glass.

S - Smells strongly of citrus and cornbread. The hops are mostly floral and slightly spicy.

T - Lemon zest and citrus hops balanced with a nice sweet finish. Not as bitter as I expected from the description. I have a hard time believing 140 IBU with the balance and clean finish on this beer. Aftertaste is a combination of hops, grass, and sweet malt.

M - Good carbonation and slightly chewy feel. Very smooth with a finish moister than the norm for a very hoppy IPA.

O - A good IPA from Short's Brew. This fits into the category that I call "pale IPA" (pardon the redundancy). I appreciate their ability to make a very clean, drinkable IPA that doesn't shy away from the hops. It is nearly balanced, favoring the hops slightly. If I had access to this beer regularly I would probably drink it on the reg.
