it sounds cliche but Mekong really is a must visit in Richmond.
the restaurant sits in a non-descript strip mall with some other Asian shops, stores. other than the occasional line of people at the door on a Fri/sat night you wouldnt really know anything good was there.
you walk in and immediately behind the hostess you are greeted by a display table of many of their bigger bottled beers along with a whiteboard listing the current tap lineup. there's usually 10-11 plus the occasional cask. you walk through 2 "quieter" dining rooms then you find yourself in the back where the bar is with another dining room.
the decor is a bit on the cheesy side; half is your stereotypical asian art while the rest is big banners from various breweries, many of them congratulating Mekong for various anniversaries.
opening the menu and you quickly realize the last 1/3 of it is for the beer, with several pages on Belgian beer alone! everything from Chimay, Kasteel and Augustijn to St Bernardus, Dupont and Hanssens.
the tap lineup refreshes throughout the week and what is on tap today might not be on tap 2 days from now; less if popular/mentioned in An beer club. speaking of, the owner An has a beer club which usually meets once a month during the week for various tastings/release parties. always a good time to drink great beer, cheap!
the domestic bottle selection, at least printed in the menu, is a bit limited. this is my primary gripe with Mekong; they never update the beer bottle menu. you know they have other bottles there as you see them sitting out on other tables but you have to ask if something is available... which brings me to my second gripe at Mekong, the waitstaff. with exception to the owner An and his brother Kha, the rest are clueless when it comes to the beer. for a beer from the tap you often need to order by # from their handwritten list as they dont know which is which. for a bottle, just point to the line in the menu!
the food is excellent.
appetizers of pork crepes and various spring rolls are excellent finger/beer food in case you dont want a big meal but if you do, it's available as well. they also have excellent soups and their Pho is very good as well.
depending on your waiter, you can sometimes order off the menu as well, like pork chops on the bone and a spicy, steamed catfish. we love to tell Kha to just bring us some family style food which we'll put on the lazy susan in the middle of the table and everyone just goes to town (we do this with the beer too!).
pricing is good on food and sometimes excellent on the beer. drafts are usually $4-$7 depending on what it is and I've often bought bottles here $1-$2 cheaper than at retail stores!

Total hole in the wall but a hidden gem in Richmond. Located near Libbie and West Broad Street. Don't worry if you don't speak the language...the menu is in English also. Fantastic food variety but amazing beer selection. One of the best I've ever seen. Tons of beer on tap. Many of the local breweries and quite a few hard to find smaller batch breweries. Something for every palate. I love spicy food with a nice stout. Great for lunch or dinner. Many release parties as well.

I was fortunate to finally make it to Mekong when my Roanoke beer sons and I went up to Richmond for the Hardywood Park GBS release on 11/16/13.
I had been forewarned that their tap list was impressive and I was not disappointed. I'm not sure how many taps they have but in RedNeck terms, it was a shit load. We all settled in to trying various Hardywood brews and they were all on point. You could tell they take pride in serving great brews properly (no tap line funk, great glassware, ect).
The service was outstanding without being overbearing, when you needed food/brews they were there Johnny on the spot.
Everyone enjoyed the food with me ordering an appetizer of pork dumplings. I love spicy foods and the dipping sauce (I asked for spicy) was deliciously HOT. Spot on in my book.
My only tick on the place is that it's 2 hours north of me and I could not convince them to pull up stakes and relocate to Greensboro, N.C. (sigh).
I had a blast there and wish we coulda stayed longer but we had to mosey over to Hardywood for the GingerBread Stout release. Thanks to my Roanoke sons (Kenny, CJ, and Chris) for turning me on to this fantastic place. Perhaps my old ass will make it back up that way onced again.

At Mekong, Beer is the Answer!( Review from my 11/16/13 visit.)
This place is a Vietnamese Restaurant with an awesome beer selection. They always have a large selection of Belgium and Belgium style beers on-top. They even have some sours and beers that I rarely see at other beer bars.
Every time I visit Richmond, VA, I have to stop here. The wait staff is friendly and the bartenders are very helpful at recommending beers.
The food pairs well with Belgium beer. They have a really good pho and make your own spring rolls.
The beer prices are very reasonable for what you get.
If you are ever in central virginia, MEKONG is a must.

It's hard to find a place with a wide variety of beers in the Richmond, VA area that are truly a wide variety and are not just pandering to the mega-produced and/or faux craft drinkers. An & crew has taken a Vietnamese restaurant with great food and atmosphere and transformed it to a beer Mecca.
Recently, he's re-configured the bar to now have 50+ taps, plus many different bottles. His 4 white-boards of draft beer listings contain beer, brewery, price, ABV, and sometimes a note about flavor... while containing many beers listed on each board. They're usually updated as soon as a keg has kicked.
The selection runs the gamut from your IPA's to your Red ales, Lagers to Sours - he keeps a few beers around, but rotates many of the taps. I've never seen any mega-produced anything served there, though the running joke is he'll find a bottle of Zima if anyone wants. Not only are the beers craft, but most score high points in ratings as well.
Depending on who you know and how busy they are, you can usually find An, Qui, or one of the other crew members discussing beer... and possibly pouring you ridiculous stuff you won't find on a menu. If it's your birthday, you even get the 64 oz birthday snifter filled with your choice (or theirs... depending on what they want to do). Otherwise, you'll get beer served in it's proper glassware; few shaker pints.
The food is excellent as well. Though most bar/restaurants in this area pair with good ol' American classics, you can't go wrong with crispy spring rolls, clay pot chicken, pho, and plenty of beer.
The only thing that might stick out is that if you go when it's busy, there's a good likelihood you may have to wait for a table, and wait for a bartender if seated at the bar... but usually they take care of you when they get to you.

This place is awesome! It's a Mecca for Virginia beers, Belgian-style ales and hard-to-finds. The staff is generous with the tasters, but you'll never be disappointed with a full pour. Everything is of the highest quality, perfect representations for each style, and the prices represent a tremendous value. Pair all of that with some top-notch Vietnamese food and you've got a guaranteed winning outing.
