Notes:
A genre-blending mix of an American wheat beer and a traditional India Pale Ale. Encore is hopped and dry-hopped with Simcoe and Amarillo hops, and has a pleasant grapefruit aroma that compliments its subtly sweet malty backbone. Grab a lighter and get up front!

Magic Hat Encore
12 oz brown bottle
Best by February 29, 2012
Served in a 20 oz tulip glass
Pours a hazy orange color with a very frothy and fluffy white head on top. Nice trails of sticky lacings decorate the glassware.
The nose if floral and quite hoppy with some citrus.
There are some toasted biscuit flavors with a hint of caramel sweetness. The real flavors in this IPA are the citrus notes of orange and lemon. I notice some low carbonation levels, which make this beer very smooth.
I like how this beer is not overly aggressive hop bomb, yet it still provides a really enjoyable amount of hops.

Pours a cloudy, golden-brown color with a thin white crown. A bit of froth is left on the inside of the glass as it goes down. The aroma definitely screams grapefruit as advertised, and I'm also picking up a plethora of grains and coriander. The taste is light and summery, while at the same time packing in a lot of tart and sourness. The finish is quite bitter, however I suspect in my bottle the hops have faded a little.

Pours a hazy sunburst orange with a tight, white head that leaves rings of lacing.
Smells of grassy and citrusy hops.
Tastes of the citrus character with a solid malt backbone. Hops come through first with notes of lemon along with some grass notes. This leads into some fruity notes. Malts come in and add a little caramel along with bread notes. Fairly balanced overall.
Mouthfeel is medium with slightly crisp amount of carbonation.
Overall, this is a solid IPA and fits in well with the Magic Hat lineup.

A: A lot of sediment on the pour. Hazy, dark orange tint. A fingers worth of head lingers on. Very unexpected here.
S: Grapefruit, orange zest, lite sticky caramel.
T: Grapefruit skin, pine sap, slightly woody aftertaste. Not much malt flavors.
M: A very lingering hop aftertaste after each sip. Kind of spicy like a rye bread. Good carbonation, very light on the tongue.
O: A good IPA, not the best, but one of the better Magic Hat limited / one-offs.

I picked up a case of the Magic Hat winter variety pack last week and this was one of the included beers. I started drinking these after I had already consumed copious amounts of Hamm's so I didn't bother reading the bottle. I really liked the beer, but could tell it was different than your average IPA. After picking this beer back up I discovered it's a wheat infused IPA, which makes sense when your sober.
A- Light orange and very cloudy like you would expect from a Hefeweizen. The head was white, about one finger thick, and laced nicely.
S- Mild citrus notes upfront followed by a funk aroma, most likely from the simcoe hops. I don't pick up any hints of malt.
T- Thick up front with loads of hop flavor. It has an amber character that fades into grapefruit and citrus with a little spiciness on the finish. You also get some grainy flavors from the wheat malt.
M- It's definitely on the medium-thick side in body from the wheat malt. It also has a smooth texture which is unique for the style. The carbonation was on the moderate side.
O- Overall, a delicious beer and unique twist on the IPA style. It definitely has the hop character you expect in an IPA, but with twist of wheat. It's thick and smoother than your average IPA. I'm going to have to brew my own Wheat IPAs in the near future.

Appearance: very hazy orange color with some particles floating around. There’s a soap-like head that’s about two fingers or so in height. The lacing is decent
Smell: Soapy hops -- really not much malt here, but it smells average.
Taste/feel: On the front there’s some massive citrus -- grapefruit sorts. Very bitter. Almost a medicinal flavor in there. The aftertaste is spicy with not much malt to balance it out. Decent beer, but it’s just not balanced enough for me.
