I will admit to a major prejudice against Magic Hat. I have avoided their brews ever since I had something of their call Circus Boy - vile stuff. But I like a bargain, and they had a cool looking sampler box (skeletons on it) on sale, so I guess it's time to give them a fair shake. I didn't see Circus Boy pi** in the box.
So this was the first to get a taste, and I didn't know what it was until I popped it, and immediately a very pleasant aroma came out. The taste is very mild, but nice wheat taste. Whatever fruit is in there is in very tasteful proportions - it could be stronger. In fact, if everything were stronger all around I would like it.
It does not have any of the funky creaminess I associated with this brewery, so maybe that was just my imagination. Good beer.

Purchased as part of the Night of the Living Dead MH sampler case last year; 2010.
Poured into a pint glass a straw yellow color.
Aroma was a smoky fruity smell, hard to pin down the actual smell.
Tasted of smoke and yeast upfront, surprised that the apple taste was not more pronounced.
After the first few sips, I was becoming disappointed with the overall taste, which to me was not pleasing to me. I still had 5 more to go through at this point, and these weren't much better.
Overall I did not like it very much, but then again Witbier's in general aren't my favorite.

From a sampler pack purchased and consumed Sep 2010.
A cloudy pale straw color, with a nice head.
The aroma is a light mix of fruit and spices, but on top of that is a definite scent of rancid apple juice. It's not especially strong, but it's there, and once you identify it, there's no escaping it.
The taste echoes the smell, hints of spices, watermelon, and that rancid / fermented apple juice flavor.
At first, it's a beer that just tastes off. Then you realize you know that flavor, you'd tasted it before in a forgotten bottle of apple juice that went rancid. Then you realize that the beer smells and tastes of rancid apple juice, and you can't drink it anymore.

I was really excited to try this brew. My first thought was that it was going to be similar to a hard cider. That wasn't the case the apple was a little bit hidden in the background in this one. It could have used a little more apple overall. The smell was sweet and fresh. The color was a golden yellow. Seemed more like a spring release to me than a fall one. Nit enough spices to make it a fall beer.

The appearance and the smell really set the bar pretty high for this one. The solid tartness of the green apple smell with the coriander make a promise that the taste doesn't quite deliver.
They bill this one as an autumn beer, but it would be much more commonplace in summer time along something like a Woodchuck hard cider. It goes down really clean and smooth. It has a very light taste.
The lacing is pretty much non-existent and the mouthfeel is really thin. Still, I could see myself drinking a six pack of this on a warm July night. With a little more flavor to it, however, it would be a really solid cold-weather beer.
