Poured from 22oz bomber into a pint glass. This bottle is labeled as being 9.2% ABV, rather than the above-noted 9.7%.
Appearance: rich amber-brown hue with a light haze and effervescence. Head poured a finger of frothy tan foam which subsided quickly; par for the style. Overall a good looking beer!
Smell: rich, warm malt aroma with a bready quality almost reminiscent of banana bread. There's also definitely a woodiness present here, which is more of a tannic dryness sitting atop the rest of the aroma. It's an interesting effect; overall, not bad.
Taste: big, rich malt flavor with a lot more woodiness than the aroma. There's definitely a dry, tannic quality mixing in with the sweet malt, and I think it works less successfully than in the aroma. The malt is very sweet and bready, and has some biscuity quality I don't love. Decent, but not wonderful.
Mouthfeel: big body with a nice, well-integrated carbonation and a silky smooth creaminess. Good stuff.
Overall: this beer is OK, but I don't like it as much as the non-woody Silver City Fat Scotch ale. Something about the character of the malt just doesn't ring my bell.

draft at uber awhile back, entered from notes
a: served in a snifter, the beer is a clear, reddish amber in color with an off-white head that shows good coverage to start but soon falls back
s: big malty nose with brown sugar, toffee, and nuances of peat smoke layered with vanilla and oak, dark fruits - black fig and raisin
m: body medium-full with a lower level of carbonation, creamy and smooth
t: closely follows the lead of the nose with a rich, malty body of black dried fruits, dark sugar, toffee, and a hint of peat, complimented with smooth vanilla, a quick touch of roast
o: been years since I had the standard scotch, so no comparisons, but the oak does well here by me, a tasty scotch ale with a good barrel character

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Sedimenty reddish brown with a decent khaki head. Wispy retention.
Smell - Oak is pretty strong. Vanilla comes through. Cola aromas. Diacetyl. Caramel. Maybe closer to toffee.
Taste - Much more cola like flavors. Diacetyl is there up front. Woody bite in Te back with some sulfuric smoke. The finish is an odd mix of wood and smoke.
Mouthfeel - Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Big scotch ale, but I didn't really notice.
Overall - It's all over the place with its flavors. The wood is only interesting on the nose. The smoke hinders it in the aftertaste.

Review from 9/2010 notes. Poured into a Caracole small snifter. Pours a dark red amber with little carbonation, just a thin line of foam around the glass edge. Caramel malt and faint oak aroma. Caramel malt and oak, mild dark fruits and esters. Finish is somewhat dry with a an abrupt light bitterness. What flavors are there are pleasant, but seem subdued. ABV covered well by the flavors though. Pleasant, but not outstanding.

Pours a transparent dark reddish brown color with a minimal tan head that rapidly dissipates leaving minimal spotty lacing and a rather flat tan cap.
Aromas begin with plenty of sweet caramel malts, honey, brown sugar and hints if vanilla. As it warms I get some slight oak and toffee but a boat load more of vanilla with underlying roasted notes.
The tastes being much like the Fat Scotch ale did. Lots of caramel malts with some light brown sugar and a touch of peat/roasted malts. As it warms the vanillas becomes more apparent as do the light woody oak flavors. Maple and butterscotch flavors emerge and join the vanilla further adding to the complexity added from the oak aging.
The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium to low carbonation. I wish the body was a little bigger here for such a low carbonation level. It drinks a tad too light for the ABV. Finish is neither dry nor slick; somewhere in the middle. Sweet maple syrup and vanilla flavors linger quite nicely on the palate.
Overall this was very nice. A tad too light and easy to drink too fast considering the higher ABV here. Much better than the Fat Scotch ale (base beer from same brewery, before they age it in American white oak). That beer drank way too sweet and cloying where the oak aging has helped to soak up some of those residual sugars, drying out the beer to an acceptable and much more enjoyable level. Not the best scotch ale or wood aged beer I have had by a long shot, but worth a go for the reasonable 7-ish dollar price point combined with the tasty overall flavor profile.

Dark mahogany highlights with thin tan head and no retention. Peat, smoke, and oak aromas. Smoky peat and sweet caramel vanilla flavors end in a semi-dry finish. A light bite gets lost in the sweetness. Slick, robust feel.
Alcohol is well blended in an otherwise malty beer. A somewhat overly sweet (not that I minded) scotch ale with some nice wood notes. Definitely an easy beer though it could have had a little more complex taste.

A year old 22oz bottle (at cellar temperature) is poured into a glass mug. A small tan head forms on top of a dark brown liquid. Ruby highlights can been seen when the light penetrates. The head settles to a skim after a few minutes.
Oak and bourbon notes dominate, followed by peat and some plum sweetness.
Peaty malts give a subtle smokiness to this beer. The oak notes help as well. Some dark fruits add sweetness to the mix. Some roastiness at the end, but it isn't very strong. A very good Scotch ale; it's heavy on the oak but it works.
The beer is full bodied and has low-to-medium carbonation. It leaves a good coat, but its viscous and doesn't stick around for too long. There is some stickiness on my lips, but it is on par for the ABV.
This is an enjoyable Scotch ale. If you are like me and really enjoy this style, I'd recommend you seek this one out. The oak notes give it a uniqueness that I really enjoy.
