Poured on-tap and served in a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, hazelnut coloring with a filmy white surface coating. Nose of smoke and charcoal, with a woody backbone. Smells like a campfire. Flavors of smoke and roast, with a dark caramel backbone that gets a bit buried. Great flavors on a smooth body. The aftertaste is all smoke...this is a bonfire in a glass. Clean, smooth finish.

This is one of our local breweries. They make some pretty good beer, but their Rauch is not one of them. This beer is one-dimensional. Tastes like they took a decent pale ale and added smoke flavoring. Their beers are hand made, so I'm sure this rauch is made with smoked grain. Not well done.
Appearance is attractive burgundy. Smell is slightly sweet, a bit of creamed corn, lots of smoke. Taste is balanced malt and bitter with lots of smoke, some vanilla. Mouthfeel has a medium body with light carbonation that seems appropriate. Too much plain smoke to make this drinkable, although it does improve by the time the bottom of the glass appears.

A - Nice deep and dark amber/red color. Had very little head when it arrived and had a very short retention time.
S - Very inviting smokey aroma. Left lingering smokey/salty/peppery elements lingering.
T - Presented early with a heavy amount of smokiness. The smokiness remained throughout the entirety of the taste and was joined by the malt taste in the middle. Left a very nice smokey taste afterwards.Tasted similar to cured meats.
M - Much smoother and lighter than I would have expected based on the smokey taste/aroma.
D - The strong aroma and early smokiness are a bit intimidating, but after the beer hits the tongue, it is much smoother then expected and wound up being very pleasant.

Clear reddish orange color. Thin layer of white head. Glassy with tiny carbonation bubbles. Head fades quickly.
The smell is a very smoky BBQ aroma. Wonderful smoked meats waft above the glass. Some roasted malts a distance second.
The initial smoky, roasted, fireplace flavor of a rauchbier, but a bit of pale malt underneath. Does have a nice smoky aftertaste.
A bit watery feel, and fades away quickly. Not bad out of the bottle, but much better on tap. More thin and watery than I would have liked.

This beer is back on tap at Brown's. I had it a few years ago when we use to stop in once a week. This was my first visit in a long while, which is a damn shame. Brew had a nice medium brown color to it with a medium light tan (looked that way in the lighting around the bar but could have been off white I suppose) that had ok retention. The aroma definitely gave off a smoked scent, really dominated things but in a very pleasant way, though some of the folks I was with would disagree, but hell they where drinking the fruity beer anyway. The flavor really highlighted nice malt flavors along with the smoke. This is a nice brew, though I a doubtful I would want more than one in a sitting. Give it a try if your at Browns, and if they have it on tap.

Read a poster in the brew pub that mentioned the malt was Beechwood smoked after malting by the brewer on an offset smoker and was lager fermented. Better review to follow, but it had alot of smoke aroma, reddish body, sweet malt, but the smoke flavor was kind of wierd and not as deep or smooth as I would have liked. Not a bad example of the style though.
